    Important Blogging Updates.

Few points of interest in the old blogsphere lately.

First off, Duane Laflotte has a blog!  This is one blog not to be missed.  Duane is a wealth of info in the areas of security, the compact framework, and .net in general.  Check him out!

Second, Thom Robbins has moved his blog to weblogs.asp.net.  Read about it here.  Check his new site out here.  Update your rss readers today!

Third, I guess I missed it before, but Chris Pels blog is here.  I remember him talking about it at Code Camp, but I forgot to subscribe.  Get it today!

Windows Mobile Development Day a HIT!

Well from being there and talking to others who attended, Thom's Mobile Dev Day in Waltham MA was a great success.  Thom did a great introduction to the .net compact framework and the features and caveats of mobile dev.  Next Duane gave an awesome demo of occasionally connected applications and their development.  I see Duane posted his code samples on his shiny new blog.  After lunch Chris Pels gave us some great insight on data storage and SQL CE.  Don Sorcinelli ended the afternoon with an very interesting, informative and energetic show of some compact framework tips and tricks.  I guess if you attended or even if you missed, you can contact Thom to get the other samples or slides.  Thanks to everyone who planned, presented and attended this event, it was a great time and very informative.

It's about time, a fake tablet!

I have asked a few people about this, and no one seemed to know.  I was going to blog-ask it and have been avoiding it for time reasons.  Thanks to Loren, now I have an answer.  Thanks a lot, I have an older laptop running XP Pro and a nice input tablet I am very comfortable using for Flash animation.  I have “written” notes in OneNote with it and was sorely missing the “ink” features.  I asked around and no one seemed to know if loading XP Tablet on a non-tablet laptop would kill it.  Looks like not, and I will re-load the older laptop with XP Tablet and post here later with the results, using a nice Wacom tablet.  Great idea for developing tablet pc applications on a non tablet.  Thanks Loren!

    Wassa matta for you?

Still running or know someone who runs an internet connected machine without anti-virus software?  Enough's enough.  Scott Hanselman points to two free options for anitvirus.  The CA package looks like it's free for a year, while the Grisoft is forever free for the home user.  It's the perfect solution for that aunt or brother in law who calls up the family network admin (YOU) every three months or so and says 'My computer's slow, and it's crashing a lot'.  Get them on one of these products, turn on the damn free firewall in XP, and download Spybot today!  Wassa matta for you already? Do it and do it now.

    Pocket RSS Reader

Thom Robbins, our D.E. here in New England has a cool app in preparation for our Mobility Day tomorrow.  He has a very informative post and the install package for the app.  It's a News Reader for RSS built entirely on the compact framework.  I am installing it now, go check it out.  Also, if you're in the area and want to learn something about mobile development, check out the mobility day link!

Flash Me! Macromedia Flash MX pdate to v 7.2

New Updater—Version 7.2 for English Macromedia Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004

7/27/2004 This product update resolves issues identified in Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004 to improve performance and stability. All users running the English version of Flash MX 2004 7.0 or Flash MX 2004 7.0.1 should apply this updater, regardless of location or operating system. This updater will update Flash MX 2004 to version 7.2. You can check your product version number by selecting the Help > About menu. Full Release Notes are available.

I have been running this for a month now and have noticed a pretty worthwhile improvement in performance in the overall Flash environment.  It loads a little quicker and runs a bit smoother.  I have never had a problem with the stability (I am running Flash MX Pro 2004) but I guess there are stability improvements also.  Take the plunge, it's been out a month and I haven't heard any horror stories, so get up to 7.2.

It's only 66MB and it's free.  If you have slow internet, you can contact your Macromedia rep and get a disk for free or a nominal fee.

    Sucking Chest Wound? Here's a Band-Aid.

Wow, I work in a place where the machines crash at random, I am doing VB6 and classic ASP development on a Celeron 900 with 128 MB ram.  The machine crashes at random 4 to 8 times a week, the network / exchange server is down so much, (without exaggeration) the internet / network is unavailable 10 to 15 hours a week, and my emails have an average delivery rate (coming and going) of about 50%.  I actually purchased, out of my own pocket, without reimbursement, a new laptop to develop on, I figure the crash less frustration outweighs the cost.  I also use my own personal email for work correspondences, I hate having a customer or vendor we no longer do business with having my personal email address, but it beats sending and waiting and re-sending and more waiting just to get my job done.

My company's industry is transportation, but we have an IT department of about 75.  25 developers and the rest help desk / tech support / hardware and network types.  I know buying IT equipment takes a back seat to more trucks and more warehouse space and the like, but come on here.  We get to work on crappy equipment that is fair to poor at best, and then beg for sub standard replacement parts as things die.

OK enough of a setup here... I just got to sit in a two hour waste of time “state of things” meeting where we learned that our income is up, our billing is up, our assets are up, our business is up in general, and I'm still developing on a Celery 900 piece of crap.  WTF is going on here?  The tech department I am in is located 20 minutes from our other offices and warehouses, and the place looks like a shady fly by night scam shop.  We have furniture made of old shelving and milk crates!  Am I supposed to feel better after this meeting?  We are offered lame cook outs during work hours that might be able to pass for a decent soup kitchen a couple times a year, and a pathetic “family day” that is way under-attended and a general waste of time.

I guess the point is, if there is one other than just to rant, if you are a Mr. Bigshot, or Junior Executive Vice Mr. Big and have any real say at all in your company, PLEASE, take care of your damn employees!  They are the reason your business is up.  You really think you and the other suits are the reason things are going well at work?  Think again.  Take a look around you.  Want to raise morale and acknowledge your employees, don't offer them crappy family picnics and lame cookouts that most respectable homeless people would shy away from, this only makes the matter worse, it's practically an insult.  We even were offered a chance to form a committee, that I was on, to improve morale and the workplace attitude (that's how bad it got here), but 90% of our ideas were shot down.  I am talking about reasonable ideas, nothing like “give everyone a huge raise” or “new Lincoln Navigators for everyone!”, and in the end, those few people who had a little enthusiasm left at all were left feeling more jaded that those they were trying to motivate.  I don't even turn my work given PC on any more, there are bees in our office every spring and fall, the office looks like it was furnished out from an Ames going out of business fixture sale, the network / internet is about as reliable as an extended weather forecast, the deadlines are piling up and morale is down, but please, feel better already, because business is up  and Mr. Big's bottom line looks great!
