January 2007 Entries

After a nice holiday break, I'm back in TX again. (Technically I've been back a couple weeks now, but that's not the point.) The point is, time flies when you're on a good gig. I can't believe we're already a month into 2007. It seems like I was still looking at Halloween decorations last week. (Ok, fine, technically I WAS still looking at Halloween decorations last week, but that's because it's my favorite holiday and I couldn't be bothered to take them ALL down.) So anyway, back to the gig. It's ......

It's official:

ASP.NET AJAX RTM

Now go forth and make sites that do cool things... without postbacks.

I didn't stand in line. I didn't rush right out. I didn't beat up grannies or housewives to get my copy. I went to WalMart. Paid my 40 bucks. Came back to RCG and started installing. About an hour later (4 discs plus 3 online updates) I was ready to play... then Boy #1 pushed me out of the way and proceeded making a Blood Elf Paladin. Yeah, him and a million other folks. Let's just say the starting areas were a bit crowdy. Lots of very well dressed Blood Elves roaming around whacking stuff, issuing ......

I was glancing over GWB today and I noticed that long time blogvomiter and general nere-do-well Chris J. Breisch was no longer on the blogroll. That means Big D is now closing in on me quickly. In fact, as I type this, he's only two posts away from being right behind me (in the "huff puff I'm two miles back, but there's nobody between us" sense of the word.) Must be all that working out he's been doing. Hey man, nice pants. Guess I should start working out too... nahhhh. edit: Apparently, the aforementioned ......

Magenic Technologies is looking for some smart cookies. If you're a consultant (or want to be one) and live in the Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago or Minneapolis area (or are willing to move there) then contact me via my blog. Microsoft Haters need not apply. While Java, C/C++, PHP and Oracle are definitely nice to have on your resume, it'll take an obvious Microsoft focus to get past the gate. Experience with .NET, SQL Server and other MS technologies is a must. If you know CSLA, that's ......

I received this today from someone pretty high on our corporate food chain: Chris- I thought you might find it interesting that your blog found its way to me after several forwards through the Microsoft channels – I received the forward from the Microsoft person who is our National Business Development Manager. He started our meeting out this morning telling me we had a few items to discuss that weren’t on the agenda. He had received a few emails internally at MS that we needed to address (and made ......

While working on our game this weekend, I got my butt soundly kicked by Jason in 3D Math. I honestly had no clue what the hell he was talking about at one point. So... I decided to break down and read a book on the subject. Currently I'm working my way through the 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development by Wordware. Unfortunately the code examples are in C++, but the majority of the book should still prove useful. It's just one of those things I never gave much (any) thought to when working ......

I don't know (or care) if this is real or not, but it's too funny not to share.

Web Munchkin

Those of you blogvomiters out there probably won't see why it's funny, but that just makes it all the funnier for thsoe of us who do get it.

This weekend has totally rocked so far. George and Jason arrived late Thursday night, and we headed straight for the local pub. A few pints (each) later we were on our way to Reality Check where we threw down in an impromptu Worms deathmatch on the GC. Friday we spent the first part of the day in design mode, writing all over the walls in our self-imposed isolation. After lunch we began slinging code and George commenced designing the art assets. Let me just say, George rocks. It was a terrific opportunity ......

Well, as pretty as I thought my first ad was, apparently it sucked in print. So they sent it back to me and I got a chance to redo it. There's a lesson in there somewhere about looking good on a computer screen and looking good on paper (and newspaper at that.) It never really occurred to me to print it out and look at it that way before sending it in. It will next time. So anyway, here's the revised ad. Apparently the logos were too small on the previous version, and didn't print well ......

I've done some flyers, and of course web & email based advertising... but today marks the first time I've designed an ad for print media. January 9th, our ad appears in LINK Magazine (a local paper.) I had to redo the ad a few times before I got it in the right format, and I was learning GIMP along the way, but I finally got something together I'm pretty happy about. Now, having said that, there are a few things I'll do differently next time. Main objective this time was to get the word out about ......

I got a Zune for Christmas, from my employer. Here are a few reasons I hate it. #5 - It's really cool looking, and people keep wanting to touch it. #4 - It holds WAY more music than I can possibly listen to. I've downloaded everything in sight and it's still not full. #3 - My Zune Pass gives me way too many choices. There's so much stuff on there I just can't download it all fast enough. #2 - The video screen is so big, when I'm travelling, other people keep looking at it to see what I'm watching. ......

Well... I'm betting some of you know some of them, but chances are none of you knew all of them until now. (I was tagged by Jason Olson, btw.) #1. I didn't finish High School or College. Not really a big story here. I was a bit of a screwup in High School and ended up dropping out after my 2nd or 3rd pass through the 11th grade. Certainly not stupid, just lazy and unmotivated. I putzed around in community college for a year or so and then decided I would roadie for a band that's no longer around. ......

Yay... I picked up MVP again for 2007. Just got the letter this morning.

Looks like this year is off to a good start.

and of course, my birthday is in 5 days and I already know THAT's gonna rock.
