Microsoft Philippines DevDays 2005

Wednesday, October 26, 2005 12:35 AM
Yesterday I attended my first Microsoft (Philippines) event, DevDays 2005, and sad to say I was disappointed with the topics discussed. Damn that was boring! Let me address why...

Topics:
Visual Studio 2005
- Great presentation. Way to go Stanley Tan! I have nothing against this dicussion because this is simply an intro.

Windows Vista
- Man this shouldn't be presented on DevDays! This presentation was useless and totally a waste of time. Imagine the speaker presented how cool the UI of Windows Vista (previously know as SHORTHORN). Was it really necessary?! I mean this is DevDays and topics are suppose to be something related to development and not some kind of marketing scheme.

CLR and SQL 2005
- This should be in the morning session where all introduction to the new products were discussed.

ATLAS
- Hmmm....what can I say...? The speaker mentioned something about reducing the codes because ATLAS is the one doing the JavaScript for you when calling the server codes. Good! But for me making all those webservices for ATLAS is time consuming and also maintenance-wise its something I dont want to maintain. I mean, having an extra layer for web services is not a way to go. How about ATLAS doing the code of WS for me? I downloaded a free AJAX library here and I didn't create any webservices to make it work and much simplier to implement than ATLAS.

Indigo
- Yes...the topic was for beginners and also a total waste of time. I was expecting something more advance like a demo on how to use it in an Enterpise/Distributed scenario (correctly) or something like when its best to implement one. The one discussed can be easily done with some tutorials or documentation on the internet but the reason why/when to implement it best was not discussed...thats why one developer behind me was so clueless about it.

Conclusion:
I was disappointed. For me its like a marketing scheme. I was expecting more on advance topics like OOP, SOA, Smart Client and O/R mapping...something like making a descent data access layer, of course using either C# or VB.Net 2005...something like why and when to use Indigo and its best implementation or maybe topics usefull to development. Wait...I'm not a nerd nor an expert...maybe I was just expecting more since the event was DevDays. :-)
