So my folks and I don't agree too often (almost never). When they suggested I watch Eureka I naturally blew it off. After all, they don't like the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (I know...hard to believe). However, I recently started watching Eureka Season 1 on DVD. I am very impressed. You can learn more about the show (AND watch Season 2 episodes online) at http://www.scifi.com/eureka.
Pros
- Characters - The characters are interesting and very well developed. Ferguson's Jack Carter is very believable and works extraordinarily well as the grounding point for the eccentricity around him. Even the non-human characters are interesting.
- Dialogue - The character interaction is great. The dialogue feels natural. The techno-babble is kept to a minimum and when it is presented it is easy to grasp.
- Setting - The genius and science throughout the show are the setting, not the story. I really enjoy how the science and brilliance of the characters are the "setting" for the story and not the story itself.
- Direction & Cinematography - The director's do a great job and the filming is wonderful. I think the filming is pleasant and bright, in spite of the Vancouver rain.
- Acting - The acting is great. Nathan Stark is portrayed as, well, stark. The women are drop dead gorgeous but not cliche.
Cons
- Plot - Some of the stories are a bit...forced. I am specifically referring to the episode "Right as Raynes" (there are others but this one stands out). I like the underlying story arc of the "artifact" as well as the "Beverly Barlowe" story. However, they are NOT well developed.
All in all, I really enjoy this show. It is fun to watch and the stories and characters are interesting. However, you don't need to invest yourself into it in order to enjoy it. VERY WELL DONE!
