Is it just me or is the information regarding customization of Windows SharePoint Services Sites confusing?  It seems to be fragmented and incongruent regarding what changes are affected throughout the site, what changes update the template, what changes should be made with FrontPage, what changes should be made in XML files, etc., etc.

I have a couple of really good books and they, in turn, reference Web sites and URL's for garnering more information on customization and template creation.  I am reading through those and collaborating but I guess I am looking for the shortcut.  A diagram describing how WSS is structured combined with how changes at differing levels from various apps (such as FrontPage) affect the site collection.  Anyone know of anything like that?

Hey Brian,

I can't help you with SP 2003 but I am slowly getting involved with customizing SP 2007.

I understand the process is a little cleaner with SP 2007. Download the SP 2007 SDK and experiment. I have a VM turtorial package with VS 2005, SP 2007, Server 2003 and Sharepoint already installed. The code examples are in C# and with my limited C# experience, I get lost easly. If you are interested, I can share the VM with you.

Let me know, Joe
