To LLBLGen or not?

I guess this is my introduction post. My name is Chris Martin (as you can see :)) and I'm a .NET developer with about 6 years experience in mostly Windows technology. I used to dabble in the *nix world a little bit. But, found it too exhausting.

This is also my first attempt at blogging. I look forward to being a part of this comunity and hope that I can provide some help to you guys sometimes.

Now...Onto the meat of this post.

I'm going to use the new LLBLGen Pro on our next project. So far, I can't see any downsides to this at all.

Does anyone have any positive or negative LLBLGen Pro experiences for a web application that they would like to share?

Hi Chris, I used it for a fairly large project (the free LLBLGen not the new one) and it worked out quite well, however ended up it wouldn't create certain procedures for some of my tables it would do Select, Delete but not update. Further investigation would probably be needed for me to work it out. But speed wise it is pretty good.

Thanks a lot Justin.

I also use the free version of LLBLGEN for a large entreprise application for which we are only 2 developpers working on it. This product rocks. Next project will use the fairly cheap LLBLGEN Pro. At least, for small project, i highly recommend the basic LLBLGen, for bigger on, go for the Pro version, you won't be disappointed ! Good luck :)

For LLBLGEN to generate update stored procedures and code you need to set the primary key on the table.

I've used LLBLGEN in two large projects now. I can't live without it!

Hello. My name is Brian Brzozowski (short Irish name) and have been developing in .NET for about 2 years. I am starting a new project and also plan to use the (free LLBLGen tool) for the first time. but have a question. For SELECT queries requiring join constructs, how is this accomplished?

For more complex queries you'll need to write your own stored procedures, but at least you can probably cut and paste a lot of code from the SPs autogenerated by LLBLGen.

I've been using it for a while and considering how often my users are changing the database, it's an incredible time saver. The best thing about it is that the code it generates is really clean, best practices stuff compared to the other code gens I've looked at.

CodeSmith is another nice tool for generating code, but I haven't found any templates for it that are as complete as what LLBLGen creates. I often use it to generate my UI (e.g. datagrids, textboxes, etc.) and code behinds.

In case people are interested, there is a nice book covering the use of LLBLGen Pro at
http://www.lulu.com/content/174470
- you can buy the pdf for only $8.75, which I did after reading the preview chapters

I have mixed feelings about the product. If your project will require constant changes to your database structure, you will learn to hate LLBL in a hurry. Also, all the "Predicates" as the are referred to ( which is your WHERE clause) can become cumbersome. For my next project I will use it in a limited capacity since the updates and inserts are nice.

Pat: Your database structure shouldn't change that much - you should design your DB in such a way you don't need to change it so often.

As for predicates - .NET 2.0 supports operator overloading so they're much easier to use.

For VERY complex procedures - LLBLGen supports SP... so why not use SPs? :-)
