Windows Live Messenger Installation Error 1601, 1603 & 1635

So I learned this morning that I could add my Yahoo IM “buddies” to my Windows Live Messenger!  Cool.  I simply signed up, logged off and back on as told and was prompted to download the latest version of Windows Live Messenger.  During the upgrade though I got a 1603 message.  I couldn't successfully reinstall the Messenger after the rollback though.

As always I hit the boards and found a bunch of people had the same problem.  One post here pointed to the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.  This tool is great.  It simply lets you remove failed install entries from the Installer log.  If I hadn't done this, the Windows Live Messenger would never have let me reinstall.  I'm up and running again in just 5 minutes.  This is great!  I thought it was going to be a bad start to my day, but things are looking up.

Update:  I found a good consise resource regarding the 1603 error message on the Install Shield knowledge base.  Now this article does not speak to Live Messenger specifically, but it covers the 1603 error and things to check very well....  it is worth a look.  Click here.

Gravatar Mikkel, you bring up an interesting point which is probably an entire blog in itself. And that is the perpetual Beta. One must wonder if companies like Google and Microsoft use the Beta monicher to avoid accountability for buggy software. I mean if you never say it is a production release, then hey it becomes "use at your own risk". Right?

I'm sorry you've given up on Live Messenger. Did you actaully download the installer cleanup tool and attempt to remove the previous Live Messenger installation before the re-install?

Can't understand where the problem is, and why I should use non microsoft programs to sort it out when there shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Gravatar Lauren & Katie,

Let's start with I don't work for Microsoft! Then let's acknowledge that I just like most other bloggers write the articles I do to help folks out based on my own experiences. The post you commented on was simply a discussion of my experience with this particular problem and how I solved it.

Now Katie, you said "why I should use non microsoft programs to sort it out.." The link I include in my post is actually a link to the Microsoft site to download a Microsoft tool. However I should caution that the tool if used improperly can do more harm than good.

Lauren, it doesn't matter how many times you try to install the software, it will continue to give you trouble until you follow the instructions in my post. Let's put it this way, if your light bulb blows out, no matter how many times you flip the switch on and off, the light isn't going to shine. You've got to change the bulb. In this case you have to use the tool to unistall the original install which is broken.

Gravatar Ok, so i tried to download the msn live and had the error message about 1601. I read your previous posts and tried to follow them i downloaded the clean up utility by it tried to install an i got another error message of "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed."

Now i know this isnt directly linked to the previous posts but if you have any ideas on how to fix it it would help.

Gravatar Law,

The best I can do is refer you to MSDN Knowledge Base article KB315346. You can find it here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315346

But it sounds like you are in the weeds now. I'd be very careful with the information in this article. If done right you should be on your way, but if done wrong you may be in for even more pain.

Good Luck!

Gravatar cloz,

It would be helpful if you could provide a more specific description of what happens when you try to open MSN Live. What error message do you get when you say "it will not let me open it"?

If you are getting the 1635 error when re-installing MSN 7.5 it sounds to me like you may have to follow the instructions from my original post. It sounds like there was a problem with the installation process for MSN Live {just a guess} and that is gumming up the works on you.

Gravatar Okay so I was having an issue with people not showing up when I added them or they added me as a new contact. I did something that was mentioned on another forum and it inturn locked me right out of my msn... well just on my computer. I can access it no problem from other comps. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and nothing. I tried to use the windows install clean up tool and that didn't help either.

When i am trying to log on it just sits there and spins but nothing happens. I even left it over night and it was still spinning in the morning.

Gravatar Sorry for sounding stupid I found the link for the utility program you mentioned. Tried it and got the wonderful error "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed".

You posted a link for Law to go to in order to fix the registry, but frankly, there should be no need to. If I have to change registry codes to allow my computer to fully uninstall MSN, then the programmers should be ashamed of themselves. I'm not using this program anymore due to these 'clerical errors'. Thanks for the help Chaz, but its a lost cause for some of us.

Gravatar Jacob,

It is hard to say what originally caused your error. I would certainly try to remove the Live Messenger install first if it is throwing an error. Then if that doesn't fix it perhaps if there is an MSN Messenger still in the install list I would remove that.

Then try to reinstall Live Messenger again.

Good Luck.

Gravatar hi...i have problems with error 1603.
it almost gets to the end of the installation when it starts to roll back. then it says that it could install, and i get the error message...

now, ive been going through forums for a couple of days now, and i tried almost every solution there is out there...nothing works...

i even came up with an own solution. get a copy off all the files in the "msn messenger" folder from an other comp. then put it in program files(x86) (i have xp x64)
then start the install with the task manager at hand. when i almost get to the place where the installer starts to go back, ill kill the application. so far so good...i can now open and use WLM.
the thing is that when u restart ur computer or for any reason shut down the WLM completely it wont start again.

and the WLM 8.5 beta doesnt work on XP x64.

if anyone has a solution that REALLY works, pls
post here or email me at teodor_86(at)hotmailDOTcom

win xp x64 SP2

Gravatar I had the same problem that everyone else is having. I was able to fix the problem and hopefully it will work for all of you. You MUST have the file called msiexec.exe in your c:\windows\system32 foler. If its not there like in my case than thats problem. Do a file search for that file on your computer and once found copy and past it to the system32 folder

Gravatar WAY too much work to use MS Messenger on an MS operating system.

Too many other options out there for me to waste another couple hours on fixing this. Trillian, here I come - "extras" from using MS's own messenger be damned.

No wonder people buy Macs.

Gravatar If you're having trouble installing windows live messenger and you're using windows 2000 and receiving the message about ordinal 730 error, the reason is because windows live messenger is not compatible with windows 2000. Download the older version "windows messenger 7.0" and it will work fine. When you get prompted to update to the newer version of messenger, basically 8.0 refuse and do not update unless you upgrade your operatin system to Windows XP.

Gravatar I am having difficulties installing Live Messenger on Vista - for some reason, it gets so far then tells me I appear to be offline and to reconnect to the internet and try again...this is despite the fact I'm online!

Grrr. Any ideas?
