Rajesh Setty has a Squidoo lens helping you Distinguish Yourself.  He also has a book on on the subject, and based on what I’ve seen so far, I think I’m going to pick it up.  Some of this is “7 Habits” type stuff, but a lot of it pertains specifically to how you can distinguish yourself in the IT industry. He says the following:

Distinguishing yourself is your answer to rapid commoditization that is haunting almost all professionals in this global economy. Not distinguishing yourself is to subject yourself to the risk of eroding your market value almost on a daily basis.

Some ways you might distinguish yourself include:

  • lead a user group
  • create a popular open-source project
  • write a blog
  • publish a book
  • publish articles
  • speak at conferences

I’ve done two of these, and already haver two others on my “to do” list.  But, I still have a ways to go, and I know it.
