I’m sure I’ve mentioned it, but I live in Indianapolis (ok, just outside). You may or may not have noticed, but it’s May. May is a big month to be in Indianapolis. They have a little race there at the end of the month. You may have heard of it. My current job actually requires me to be at the track. I’m currently sitting just outside Turn One, and my window looks right out on the main gate at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. People stand right outside my window all the time and get others to take their picture. I know you feel just awful for me, but in some ways it is somewhat painful. I’ve heard that in past years some departments here have actually asked during their interviews if you’re a race fan, and they want the answer to be “NO”. Why? It’s somewhat of a distracting work environment right now. Sure, there are perks, and I won’t gloat by listing them (ok, today I won’t). But when you’re doing requirements analysis and time estimating, which is, let’s face it, not the most exciting part of software development, it’s difficult to concentrate when you’re hearing that constant whine of the motors. And it hasn’t even gotten that hard yet. Up until last week it was just the semi-private practices. Yesterday it was still just the rookies out on the track. We watched Danica Patrick turn several laps at over 220. Not too shabby for a rookie, male or female. She turned one lap at 222.741, besting last year’s pole time by almost a quarter second.
Today at noon is the beginning of open practice.
I admit it. I’m not doing my best work right now or being my most productive. Maybe I’ll play with Enumerators and Generics and write some racecar classes.
Remember, racecar backwards is still racecar.
