    California Dreamin' on a Harley!
California Dreamin' on a Harley! Than-Q to Q107 Radio and Jacox Harley Davidson in Toronto for sending us all expenses paid to California to tour the Pacific Coast Highway - a dream trip of a lifetime! We started in Los Angeles and did basically a figure 8.  From LA through mountains/desert of Highway 33 to Pismo Beach (the centre point of the 8) up 101 to Greenfield, over on the G16 to Carmel-by-the-sea.  Then it was back south on the Pacific Coast Hwy 1 (gorgeous!) back to Pismo Beach.  From...

    The Tower of Babel, Theo-style
I have been switching between VBScript, C#, and VB.Net all day today. Normally, I do this ok, but today has been unusually rough....   Basically, I have come to detest the "Set" statement in VBScript.   I cannot count the number of times I have forgotten this little keyword. Mostly, it's an issue with me changing code to use a reference type instead of a value type. Going back to change all the code to have a Set in front of it is making blood shoot out of my ears..... Oy...

Snakes on a Plane... the review
Let me start by saying I really like Samuel L. Jackson. I hope he had fun making this movie. It looked like he had fun. Surely he had more fun making it than I had watching it. This movie sucked. It sucked in a way that defies words. In sucked in that way that Love Boat reruns you watched with your grandmother when you were a kid sucked. Only more so. I had a plan. Samuel L. Jackson has a certain "signature" phrase he uses a lot in movies. Knowing this, and knowing I was in for a bad movie, I...

Good deal on the Amazon Kindle
My buddy James and me were discussing Amazon’s Kindle today at lunch.  To us, its such an appealing product, but the price is just too high.  But…I noticed today that if you sign up for the Amazon Rewards Visa Card you get $100 off - Amazon Kindle for only $259. I didn’t click over and buy one yet, I’m going to think it over a bit instead.  I really want one…  Hmm.. Who  has one of these already and how much do you love it? Technorati Tags: Amazon Kindle...

    What should Microsoft do next?
Okay, this is not totally my idea.  After the yahoo super deal fell through there were lot of pundits predicting Microsoft's next move or acquisition.  I am compiling this list that made more sense to me based on my puny little knowledge... FaceBook MySpace SecondLife SalesForce.com Novell Yahoo is so 1990's company.  Why would anybody buy them.  If you ignore them for another two years or so, there wont be any Yahoo any more (Ofcourse there is a brand name that yahoo...

Silverlight 2: How to get a Color or a SolidColorBrush from a String (by ColorName) for Binding
I ran into this problem last night when I was preparing a bigger demo for my blog. It took me some time to find a solution for a simple but important piece. I decided to go ahead an break the demo down into smaller pieces. The problem is simple: How to get a Color Object from a String of Text  (e.g. AliceBlue, Blanched Almond, or just Blue) At the Silverlight Forum I found a good link which I used as a base: http://silverlight.net/forums/p/9134/28837.aspx Here is my modified snippet: private...

    3d Visual Tour
Microsoft just released some cool software to mesh photos together. After taking several photos, the array of photos stitched together to recreate the scene. in three dimensions. It's one of those deals where you have to see it to believe it.  The product is called photosynth and you really need to think out of the box and be created to mesh your pictures together. The site has existing projects to view along with a blog. This information is from the site: You can share or relive a vacation destination...

    What I do...
Occasionally, people ask me how I became an MVP...  or they ask me what do I do besides consulting, that keeps me so busy. Here's a list of stuff I've done over the last year, and what I have scheduled through the rest of 2008. The List! If you want me to come speak at your event, it would be a good idea to check here first to see if there's a date conflict...

Hidden Surprises in .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1
Ok, imagine the following situation: You are a developer and you want to keep up with the latest technology, so you update Visual Studio 2008 with Service Pack 1, installing .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 as part of the update. You then proceed to continue with your ASP.NET application, building a nice neat AJAXy application. Everything works fine on your box, it's awesome, the in-your-cube demos go great, everybody's happy. So you build and deploy your new hotness then sit back and wait for the pats...

    What is Live Mesh?
Live Mesh seems like a simple thing, perhaps that is the point? But what 'Mesh offers me is of great personal value in that it gives me is a little part of my day back and one less complication in my life. So what is so great about it? Well I can work on documents, blog posts, spreadsheets, any file, from work or working from home, seamlessly without having to transport them via USB key or emailing them to a home or work account and run the gauntlet of quotas and cumbersome filters. Live Mesh is...

Jerry Seinfeld Is Going to Be a Celebrity Pitchman for Microsoft, Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Looks like Microsoft is pulling out the big guns in it's war against Apple... Fox News is reporting that Jerry Seinfeld has been brought in to appear in upcoming Microsoft ads. Looks like Microsoft is serious about stopping any market share shrinkage. I wonder if the ad agency working for Microsoft is the same agency working for Vandelay Industries.  I can see it now... Apple hires Newman (actor Wayne Knight) to make a cameo appearance in the Mac vs PC ads!  I wonder who Elaine would find more sponge-worthy,...

Sams Teach Yourself Silverlight in 24 Hours, Table of Contents
I've been working since September 2007 (more or less) on an upcoming Silverlight book titled "Teach Yourself Silverlight in 24 Hours" at Sams. This book will be aimed at beginners with the technology (and maybe even beginners in programming). The reader is walked (with a lot of code samples and step-by-step examples) through most features of this amazing technology. The book has 24 chapters, each of them taking more or less (maybe rather a little more than a little less, to be honest :)) one hour...

    NINE Questions with Rachel Reese
This week, I'm chatting with Rachel Reese, ASP Insider. We've never actually met in person, but it seems like we know all the same people. Funny how that works. Rachel and I emailed back and forth for a few weeks so you could have something to read this morning. I'm off to find coffee, so please enjoy these NINE Questions with Rachel Reese: 1. Where are you from? I was mostly raised in Wyoming and consider that my "home", but I've also lived in Maine, Florida, New York, Maryland, Arizona...

Platform Builder: Cloning an MDD Lib
I have written about cloning code from the Public tree to a platform in the past, but someone recently asked about cloning an MDD lib build directory. More specifically the question was about cloning ufnmdd.lib in Windows CE 5.0, which is actually created by linking three separate libs together. In this article, I will walk through the process by cloning one of those libs. Ufnmdd.lib is created by linking ufnmddbase.lib, ceosutil.lib and defbuslib.lib. I suspect that most people don’t really need...

SQL Server 2008 RTM First Impressions
I have decided to continue my article on the SQL Server 2008 RTM exploration update 3 in form of a new post. I am up and running with the SQL Server 2008 with no issues. The SQL Server Configuration Manager is a nice replacement for Surface Area Configuration and SQL Browser and it needs little attention. I spent literally 2 minutes just glancing at the settings. Nothing much to change. Among the new things are SSMS enhancements like the built in ability to debug T-SQL be it a stored procedure...

Windows CE: Automatically setting the Object Store Size
A customer asked me an interesting question today. He wanted to know how to know how much space his system needed for the Object Store. That had me thinking that there could be a way to monitor the size and automatically adjust it, Windows Mobile does that. Of course Windows Mobile probably has a better way to manage the Object Store size than this, I am guessing that it monitors the size within FileSys and adjusts it as requests come in. I wrote the following code just to see what could be done. I...

    Software Development and LEGOs
I recently went to my cousin's birthday party (he turned 6), and since he's apparently become a huge Star Wars fan (read: played LEGO Star Wars and loves shooting off C-3PO's leg), my parents decided to get him a couple small Star Wars LEGO toys that were designed for that age group.  They're small - maybe 30 pieces or so - but they're still pretty neat, and I can't help but be amazed at how the pieces still come together to form the whole.  I was a LEGO and K'nex fanatic when I was younger, but...

    XslCompiledTransform.Transform Whitespace
Came across an error when I was using XslCompiledTransfrom.  The error is White space cannot be stripped from input documents that have already been loaded. Provide the input document as an XmlReader instead. Mmm OK.  My VB Code was xsl.Transform(xmlDoc, xw2) and I modified it to xsl.Transform( The xsl includes the xsl xsl:preserve-space elements="*"/> < The white space is not stripped but whatever. If you googled and found this I hope it helps you out.  I wish I had found it hours...
