(End June 2011 Update)

I was recently doing a personal site and wanted to use VWD and SQL Express, this time all 2008.

All happy and fine went to the site and downloaded and selected to install SQL Exrpress 2008.

Went to look for SQL Server Express Management Studio Express 2008 annnnnd nothing!

Few search engine searches later and no clear direction found this on SQL Express home page:

You can manually download and install any edition of SQL Server 2008 directly from the Microsoft Download Center:

Which edition of SQL Server 2008 Express is right for you?

SQL Server 2008 Express is available in the following 3 editions (each is available from the Install Wizard):

  • SQL Server 2008 Express
    • SQL Server database engine - create, store, update and retrieve your data
  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools
    • SQL Server database engine - create, store, update and retrieve your data
    • SQL Server Management Studio Basic - visual database management tool for creating, editing and managing databases
  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services
    • SQL Server database engine - create, store, update and retrieve your data
    • SQL Server Management Studio Basic - visual database management tool for creating, editing and managing databases
    • Full-text Search - powerful, high-speed engine for searching text-intensive data
    • Reporting Services - integrated report creation and design environment to create reports

So make sure you download the SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools

Though I save some people some time.

One last thing:

Step 1: Download and install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.

Step 2 Download and install
Windows Installer 4.5 [important of you have pre-Vista OS].
.
Step 3 Download and install
Windows PowerShell 1.0.

And one more thing: If you have non-SP1 version of Visual Studio 2008, you will be stopped at the very last step before the install begins!!! So if you have VS2008 or any 2008 Express products, upgrade them to SP1 to install the Tools version to get your Management Studio Express.

UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:UPDATE:

A commenter by the name of "matt" has an update:

I FOUND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM ABOVE ME

1. If you run "SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe", you'll come across a "SQL Server Installation Center" window.
2. You normally click at the "Installation" tab on the left pane, and click "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation".
3. A "SQL Server 2008 Setup" installation window appears, and have the following steps included:
- Setup Support Rules
- Installation Type
- Product Key (depending on the type of installation type you selected)
- and so on...
4. Once you get to the "Installation Type" step of the installation, instead of adding a new feature to the existing SQL Instance (that I initially setup as SQLExpress), try the install new instance, or something to that effect. There are only two options in this portion, so it won't be difficult to select.
5. Click next until you reach the "Feature Selection" step of the installation. There, select only the "Management Tools" checkbox (or something that relates to the Management Studio). And, in my case, the "Client SDK" checkbox was automatically checked. Uncheck the first two checkboxes that have something to do with a new SQL Instance. You won't need that anymore because you've installed that earlier.
6. Install on and be done! :)

I hope this helps... please post replies if this worked or not.

OMG, finally a written confirmation of what I started to suspect.
This really sucks, All I could find was SSMS 2005.
I wish there would be a separate download for machines that do not need server components but just client tools for development.

Thanks for putting info "out there", appreciate it.

I have installed the "with Advanced services" version but I cant find out how to load Server Management Studio Basic.

The search continues....

Hi guys, same problem here. I found a website that helps you to install the Management Studio but before attempting make sure all SQL Server 2005 components are uninstalled. I upgraded my SQL Server 2005 to 2008 and found that no SSMS was installed. This website explains how to do it. Not tried yet but maybe this can help you. I will try it tommorrow and let you know.

I posted yesterday to tell you about the website I found that explains how to install the Management Studio and I can testify. It works! Just make sure you uninstall all the 2005 components. My management studio is up and running perfectly. Try this!

Thanks a lot for the information. I was searching for it over an hour. You made my day which is actually my birthday. Thank you very much. :)

I was lost too. I installed 2008 Express, then downloaded Management Studio 2008 separately. Strangely due to some unknown reason, I was not able to install Management Studio. It was asking if I wanted to install new db instance. I thought oh okay Mgmt Studio comes with database core. I uninstalled db core and then installed Mgmt Studio and realized it is just Mgmt Studio as mentioned in MS website. Finally installed 2008 Express and now it is working. So correct order of installing if you did not download "with Tools" or "with Advance Services" but as separate installation files, then install in this order -

1) Management Studio 2008
2) 2008 Express

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 7/1/2009 11:10 AM ordueste
the install order can be changed as needed

SQLManagementStudio2008_x
86_DEU.exe" /Q /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools

OK,
1. download SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe...check
2. run it...check
3. get installation center...scratch head...say WTH? very loud. Repeat steps 2&3 a few more times in case u got it wrong.
4. ask for help on internets!

my question is rather basic: so wth do i click in order to install management studio express??

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 2/11/2010 6:21 AM road_runner
I got exactly the same problem.

Downloaded SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe but when I run it, it actually came up as 'SQL Server Installation Center'. It provided me with all the options to install SQL as a cluster, upgrade my SQL from previous version, advance cluster prepartion, system configuration, and a whole lot more...

BUT, it did NOT have option to install management studio express. I'm supposed to install management studio express and it gave me EVERYTHING EXCEPT management studio express. WTH?

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 2/22/2010 9:38 PM Jonas
same problem as the 2 above ..

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 3/5/2010 9:39 PM matt
make me a 3rd instance of the problem above me.

Thanks very much, Matt. You solved it. On a side note, what was Microsoft thinking??

Hi all

This post refers to an installation with the following components:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
- Microsoft SQL Server Express 2008 x64 (not R2)
- Any application (in this case VMware vCenter Server) which needs a 32bit DSN to an SQL Database

There are two more points on which you can fail:

Problem 1:

As written above, you have a full SQL Server 2008 Express installation but you are missing the "SQL Server Management Studio" to manage your SQL Server.
In some cases it will not work to install the "SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools" over an existing installation without tools. You won't see the option for adding the management tools in the installation progress.

Solution:

- Uninstall the "SQL Server 2008 Express" installation completely from your Windows Server.
- Reboot for sure.. but it's not necessary
- Install "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools" (SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe)
During the installation progress, now you can select the option "Management Tools"

For information: If you want to create a System DSN to a database, you have to create a database first. To connect to an existing database with an application that needs a 32bit System DSN, you have to configure your database with Compatibility level 90 (SQL Server 2005).

Problem 2:

You have to create a 32bit System DSN to a database instance for any application. You start the %systemdrive%\windows\system32\odbcad32.exe and create successfully a 32bit System DSN, but when you will connect to this DSN, the application will not find it.

Solution:

You startet the wrong odbcad32.exe! Thanks to Microsoft to keept IT small and simple...

This one creates a 64bit DSN:
%systemdrive%\windows\system32\odbcad32.exe

And this one a 32bit DSN:
%systemdrive%\windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe

By hindsight, that sounds logical and easy, but have fun to find the bug when you don't know that ;) It was a very nice idee from the developers, to name this files identical...

I hope this helps :)

I try to Install "SQL Server Management Studio" but keep on getting
a error : "Setup.exe is not a valid win32 application"
Can someone please help.

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 5/5/2010 4:23 AM Nadine
Hi Archie

What OS have you installed?
Did you installed .NET Framework 3.5.1?
and have you installed at a minimum powershell 1.0 (if you have a Windows Server 2008 R2, PowerShell 2.0 is integrated)

Regards,
Nadine

excellent post - at last the mystery is solved! Couldn't figure out how to install Mgt Studio Express 2008 so was doing without and had to use sqlcmd :(

Why MS chose to take a nice simple-to-install product (SQL 2005) and create this complicated monster I'll never know...

It provided me with all the options to install SQL BUT, it did NOT have option to install management studio express. I want to install management studio express and it gave me EVERYTHING EXCEPT management studio express. Microsoft should include this in default installation.

YOU HAVE SIMPLIFIED THE INSTALLATION PROCESS.

# re: SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 2/2/2011 11:32 PM hsn
Thanks for the info. My ManagementStudio Express installation also failed. I am trying again as you described.

SQL server 2008 has the most annoying installation I have ever used in the last 15 years.

"WantToGraduate", SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU is meant for 64-bit machines. SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU is for 32-bit machines.

using SQL Server management studio express 2005 you can not able to connect to SQL Server 2008 DataBase..so if you are using 2008 SQL Server you have user Server management studio express 2008.

Thanks for this explanation. I was very much confused by the prompts. This is another good blog post resource (I did not write it, just found it in troubleshooting/googling this problem)....it's long, but further validates our troubles.

Now on, since december 2011, you can download from the plattform installer the standalone management studio in several languages and even for Windows 7-64bits without uninstalling or reinstalling
