Off to San Antonio for the Computer Science & Information Technology Symposium

On Saturday, I'll be speaking to a group of teachers about how I use the open source portal DotNetNuke in my class. The event takes place in San Antonio and is sponsored by the Computer Science Teachers Association.

The Computer Science & Information Technology Symposium provides professional development opportunities for high school and middle school computer science and computer applications teachers who need practical, relevant information to help them prepare their students for the future. This event is held in conjunction with a major educational computing conference and is hosted by CSTA.

I have spoken on various topics at this Symposium and I look forward to the event every year.

Here's the outline of my talk:

What does my current Web Design Course look like?

What is DotNetNuke?

Software you'll need to have

Installing DotNetNuke

Creating a web portal

How to create pages and put modules on your page

How to install a container and skin

I look forward to meeting you if you are going to the event.

Technorati Tags: computer science education, DotNetNuke, web design

Joe Healy, the Microsoft genius, who has planned this upcoming weekend In Between Events, asked for a head count from all of us who have planned events for this coming weekend.

I was asked some time ago to head up the DotNetNuke Events for the day and we have 173 coming to that event. The room sits 210 so we have room for more! There will be over 1200 coming for the Saturday and Sunday events. Check out the inbetween site to see what's going on.

This event is free and the only thing you need to pay for is parking and lunch.

I plan on blogging about the event which happens to be in between the 2 major Tech Ed events held this week and next in Orlando, FL.

It should be a great one!

Technorati Tags: Microsoft,Tech Ed,DotNetNuke®

A hodgepodge of DotNetNuke Topics

The Orlando DotNetNuke User Group had a geat meeting on Saturday. The morning started early when Mike Webb and Dave Dyer made the trip in for 10 am from Vero Beach to Orlando. Dave was going to update the older version of DotNetNuke that Lake Highland Prep had running on their server to the current version and he wanted to view everything first before he started the intallation process.

Dave had started the install process and just ran into one problem regarding the new folder structure and was able to find a SQL script to fix it and he was done fast. Great work, Dave!

It was fun to spend some time talking to all the users about how they were using DotNetNuke. We were able to get some good resources on books, photo stock sites, and DNN modules.

I must admit that every meeting is getting better and better. Hope to see you all next month at the Convention Center for the huge DotNetNuke event.

Our next meeting is at Rez Hub Office on Wednesday, September 10 at 7pm. We hope to get more members who couldn't make it on a Saturday.

Getting to Seattle for the Microsoft MVP Summit Day 1

I arrived early at the airport and met up with our Microsoft local leader Joe, Devfish, Healy. Joe was in high spirits banging away on his keyboard at 7 am! Joe drove from Tampa to Orlando to take the Alaskan Airlines direct flight to Seattle. Joe feels so committed to the MVP program that he makes sure he has money in his budget to go to this event and hook up with the user group leaders at this event.

Shawn Weisfeld, a C# MVP and Onetug leader, was next to arrive at the gate. We all boarded the plane and arrived in Seattle on time. It was a long flight and the last hour of this flight drives me crazy. I try to read, watch a movie, and do some computer work on most flights. I was able to sleep a little and ditched the computer on the trip.

Shawn and I shared a cab to the hotel and left our luggage there to head over the the Convention Center where we registered, missed lunch, and saw the tail end of Sean O'Driscoll's talk on Social Networking. Interesting to note as I was listening to Sean that many new versions of DotNetNuke will incorporate Social Networking.

Next, I attended what was called an Open Space Event. Basically, this meeting was run by an MVP and unstructured and had a topic and everyone in the room just added content to the topic. The one I attended was quite interesting on Building and Sustaining a Gamer's Community. Most of the topic surrounded parents responsibility in understanding the type of game their child was playing. Back and forth it went on that. There are some sites that explain this to parents but the video console has taken over the television as a baby sitter and parents are either too busy or don't care about the game their child plays.

I went back to the hotel to check in after 3 and I was quite surprised that I had to wait for a room. After a long trip and no lunch, this wasn't good. I waited 45 minutes and finally I was able to go relax a little.

I headed back in the rain to attend the Open Space on User Groups- Best Practices and Opportunities. Our Orlando DotNetNuke group is relatively small and probably will remain that way because it is a select group that uses that product vs having a group that uses all of Microsoft Dev Tools. It was interesting listening to leaders who have large groups and have either face to face meeting or virtual meetings. Everyone wants to get good speakers and there was much dialogue on that. This session was very worth it and I'm glad I went.

Microsoft is scanning your badge to track where you are going. Same as having members sign in to meetings but just electronically.

There was an hour before lunch to meet up with your MVP lead. Unfortunately, I tried to meet up with Mike Frosmire but he wasn't at the table when I showed up so I was with many of the Florida MVP's. I did meet up with Joe Brinkman from DotNetNuke Corporation and spoke to him about the upcoming DNN University we plan on having in Orlando on June 8th. I met Joe in Orlando at the Orlando Code Camp.

Richard Kaplan from Microsoft welcomed all of us and asked the new MVP to raise their hand and I was very surprised at the number of new professionals.

Finally, dinner and I was starved. I tried to find the Florida folks table but the room was enormous. I sat down and introduced myself to a new MVP from Grand Rapids Michigan. We talked about the program and some of the things he was doing. That's part of the fun of being here, meeting new people and learning more.

Today is a busy day with a bus trip to Redmond and learning more about XNA, Silverlight, ASP.NET.

Technorati Tags: Microsoft,Microsoft MVP Summit,DotNetNuke®,ASP.NET,XNA

Orlando DotNetNuke User Group Well Represented At The Orlando Code Camp

There were a couple of hundred Code Campers on Saturday in Heathrow, FL at Seminole Community College. The day was jam packed with 56 sessions and 13 tracks.

Kudos to Microsoft MVP Shawn Weisfeld for organizing the event and running around to make sure everything was working correctly. Another kudos to Microsoft DevFish Joe Healy for always trying to hook you up with someone he knows that would be a good network contact for you. I heard that the infamous Microsoft Guru Russ Fustino was there but I never had a chance to talk to him.

If you've never been to a code camp here's what the day was about:

What is CodeCamp?
It's a free one day learning event for programming professionals and students with a focus on .NET and other related technologies. CodeCamps are "grass roots" mini application platform developer conferences, free of charge to attendees and open to presenters of all stripes and experience. CodeCamps are (1) by and for the developer community; (2) always free; (3) community developed material; (4) no fluff – only code; (5) community ownership; and (6) never occur during working hours. CodeCamp does NOT contain any marketing presentations or sales pitches.

The DotNetNuke track started with my talk on Best Practices to Learn DotNetNuke. I usually do this talk alone but I invited both Orlando DotNetNuke User Group members Will Strohl and Mike Webb to contribute to the talk. In fact, I asked the other speakers in the room to contribute as well to be able to help others learn this terrific open source product.

Mike's company DNNSPIRED.COM was one of the many sponsors for the event and his company even flew in Joe Brinkman who is a Microsoft MVP and chief architect officer and co-founder of DotNetNuke Corporation to talk about Powerscript and the new version of DotNetNuke called Cambrian that is coming out this year.

Will Strohl had two talks planned and graciously gave up his talk on skinning so that Joe would have a spot to talk. Will did do is talk on Subsonic that he uses in modular development.

Ryan Morgan, who always gives an entertaining talk, was on hand to talk about Creating DNN Modules and Implementing Core Services. Darrel Hardy talked about Securing your Data Connection Strings. Stan Schultes talked on An Introduction to DotNetNuke, Installing and Upgrading. Finally, Tracy Wittenkeller talked about skinning.

Will Strohl will have a chance to do his talk on Skininng at the Orlando DotNetNuke User Group meeting next Saturday.

Hope to see you there!

DotNetNuke® Summer workshop in Orlando, FL

I'll be teaming up with Mike Webb from www.cybreze.com to train users on DotNetNuke® this summer in Orlando, FL.

Michael Webb has been building websites for large corporations, small businesses and individuals using DotNetNuke® since the beginning. His corporate experience spans over 24 years in sales and marketing with a focus on technology integration to allow businesses to provide top quality customer service and empower employees with the tools necessary to perform their tasks within their respective roles with the greatest efficiencies. Michael was born and raised in Tampa, FL, except for a 7 year period where his family lived in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina between 1971-78. He graduated from HB Plant High School in Tampa in 1979 and between 1980-81 attended Clearwater Christain College on a basketball scholarship. Michael owns and operates Cybreze Enterprises LLC in Vero Beach, FL. Cybreze Enterprises LLC business centers around building targeted business solutions based on the DotNeNuke® Open Source framework. Cybreze Enterprises LLC is the parent company of DNNSpired.com.

This hands on 2 day workshop will cover installing DotNetNuke®, building pages, installing modules, creating modules, creating skins and containers, and working with permissions and security. You'll be creating a working website during the two day session.

Come to Orlando, FL and learn from experienced trainers who not only know how to teach but have the working knowledge of using DotNetNuke for their own portal applications. The two days of time you spend with us will be well worth it.

Not only will you get top notch training, but you will get a flash drive full of resources that will help you build and maintain your portal.

Hope to see you there!

Orlando Dotnetnuke User Group Meeting Update

There were eleven enthusiastic dotnetnukers who attended the first
Orlando Dotnetnuke User group meeting at Lake Highland Prep
School in Orlando today.

Everyone has a different background of using dotnetnuke and all are eager to
learn more.
The 1 1/2 hour meeting went by fast and after introductions we all agreed to meet on a
monthly basis.

Next month, on March 1, Mike Webb from DNNSpired.com will talk about the custom modules that his company has created. In April, Will Stohl will do an introduction to skinning.
All in all, it was a very productive meeting. Hope to see you at the next meeting.
