Intel does an about face supporting education pc program

Over the summer, I blogged about Intel supporting the One Laptop Per Child Program and today I learn that they have stopped supporting the program.

Doesn't make sense to me why you would agree and then less than six months later you pull out all together.

The mission of this non-profit association is to develop a low-cost laptop—the "$100 Laptop"—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. The goal is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves.

On Thursday an Intel spokesman said the company shared with O.L.P.C. the vision of putting computers into the hands of children, but the two were not able to work out what he described as “philosophical” differences.

You can form your own opinion on the real reason but I'm guessing money had to do with it because Intel has their own low cost laptop called the Classmate PC which retails for more than the One Laptop Per Child Program.

As I understand it Negraponte was demanding that Intel stop work on their own cheap laptop. Apparently he doesn't like the idea of competetition. Intel wanted to continue making a different product and looking at the problems in a different way so the two had to part ways. Unfortunate.

This is from PC World:
"The only thing they were interested in was ... helping them make marketing statements about how Intel's approach to learning was different from OLPC's approach to learning," Bender said. "They weren't interested in how we can learn together and make something better for kids."
