A good organization to belong to is ACM Why?

ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) is the world's oldest and largest educational and scientific computing society. Since 1947 ACM has provided a vital forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and discoveries. Today, ACM serves a membership of computing professionals and students in more than 100 countries in all areas of industry, academia, and government. I have been a member of this association for several years now and have met colleagues at the annual conference sponsored by SIGCSE which is The ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education provides a forum for problems common among educators working to develop, implement and/or evaluate computing programs, curricula, and courses, as well as syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy.

What brings me to blog about SIGCSE is that I finally had time to view some of the online courses that you get for your membership. Here’s a list of the subjects that are covered. ACM’s 1200 Online Course Offerings Cover These Essential Technologies: C, C++ Cisco Data Warehousing & Mining Desktop Operating Systems E-Commerce IT Management Java LAN/WAN Linux/UNIX Microsoft Servers Oracle Project Management Security Solaris Telecommunications Web Applications XML I was looking at the Introduction to Object Oriented Analysis the other day and I really liked the analogy that was being used to discuss OOP concepts.

I’ll be showing these examples when I teach my students that concept. I usually talk about cars when teaching but actually showing them this picture and parts of the car like this example will have my students grasp this concept faster. In addition to these online courses there is a list on almost 1000 online books from Safari that can be used for reference or for your more advanced students. There are many other resources that this organization provides and it’s worth visiting the acm site to see them all.
