I thought I would give a list of DotNetNuke Christmas gifts you could possibly buy for a client, co-worker or yourself. You can start with some Christmas skins that you could put on your site. The folks at All Dnn Skins has some skins for you to look at. Snowcovered has an array of Holiday skins as well. If you only want a Christmas skin for a period of time and want your skins to change automatically then you can take a look at PageChameleon which will do that for you. You can set the special day,...
The DotNetNuke web hosters at PowerDNN have put together a nice 3 minute survey to analyze your needs on what version of DotNetNuke that you might need to have. The survey has 3 categories. 1. Website Size 2. Website Usage 3. Project Details With an easy UI of drop down lists, you just answer the questions listed in each category and then submit them to the site. After you submit, you'll get reasons why you should use either the Community or Professional Edition of DotNetNuke. Here's an example of...
First of all, you should go to this site to read about the ten reasons you should learn and use web standards. Next, you should travel to DNNCreative website to read an article by Stuart Colville entitled Become a better Standardista. Finally, you should travel to the Wrox site to read the Wrox Blox that Cuong Dang wrote on DotNetNuke and Web Standards. Many companies need to sell to upper management why they should have a DotNetNuke site and web standards often comes up in this conversation. Cuong...
I've been looking at this skinning creator program for $129.95 from Artisteer for a while now and sure enough DotNetNuke skinning rookies will be able to create their own skins and apply them on their own sites. It appears that the DotNetNuke community is starting to endorse this product as well. The product has been out for a while now and its advertised as a way to change your theme using Joomia, Drupal and WordPress. Now, they have added support for DotNetNuke skins and DotNetNuke users have started...

There are several very good DotNetNuke books that are currently available but there are few reviews for those books. I found that to be odd because several people that I know either purchased the book or received it for free at a code camp event or user group meeting. Your review is important to those that might be interested in purchasing the book. Please take the time and effort to support the authors who wrote the books. Tell us what you think. Did you like it? Not like it? Did the book help you?...
Today I ran into a problem when I tried to upgrade some Websites to DNN 5. I created my backups of the site and my database as I should do to prepare for an upgrade. My problem was that I didn't follow the proper upgrade path and I tried to skip one and ran into errors. I should have read Will Strohl's blog on this but I found a little bit of time to do this and then had to devout more time to fix it. Ever run into this? So my web.config file was messed up and I immediately went to the DotNetNuke...
Today marks the day when the Orlando DotNetNuke User group officially has 200 members. It was a year and half ago that I started this group with about 7 members who came and met on a Saturday morning to discuss issues relating to the best open source web portal, DotNetNuke. Will Strohl was there along with a co-worker. Will has been a great member and now great leader of the group. More recently, Will was in charge of putting together the Day of DotNetNuke held last month at the Microsoft Office...
So if you attended the Day of DotNetNuke in Tampa, FL last Saturday, you had to notice. There were many females in attendance. Some were there being good sports and attending with their husband/boyfriend. Some were web designers who wanted to learn about DotNetNuke. This was much different than past events that I’ve attended. I have spoken at many code camps in Florida and you have the typical geek whose overweight like me and has face hair or hasn’t shaved yet toting their laptops from room to room....
Kudos to Will Strohl for the countless hours he put in to organize the Day of DotNetNuke held in Tampa, FL today. Thanks to the sponsors, speakers and volunteers who made the day a huge success. The official count for the day verified by Microsoft host Joe Healy was 138. Joe was a great host making everyone comfortable and he also was one of the speakers. Yes, Microsoft does love DotNetNuke! Joe would make a great WROX salesperson as he was trying to sell the WROX Professional DotNetNuke 5 book that...
There have been a couple of builds already for the new version 5.1 of DotNetNuke. On the DotNetNuke site, there is even a thread for users to discuss any problems they are having with the builds and they are encouraged to log their problems or suggestions on their Gemini site. The current build is 364 and there's already changes from the previous build. For example, here's the new Admin Settings: One change from the previous build is that Google Analytics is now located here. You could find this...
In the past, after backing up my SQL database and DNN site, I'd hold my breath when I upgraded my sites hoping and praying that all will be well after the upgrade. Today, I did the same when I upgraded to version 04.09.04. Low and behold, all did go well with the upgrade and the site came back up after the upgrade. Here's what the upgrade has to offer: What's New in 04.09.04 Major Highlights Fixed a major module caching issue which resulted in empty content for webcrawlers Improved performance of...

So I just spent an hour attending the DotNetNuke Corporation Webinar entitled DotNetNuke Demonstration. Needless to say, I'm a fan of DotNetNuke and I can't get enough knowledge of the product. Nik began the session by defining what the product DotNetNuke is and how easy it was to design a site. He then gave a brief explanation of the community and professional version of DotNetNuke. There are two current blogs on the DNN site that is worth looking at to stay current on DotNetNuke news. One is from Scott Willhite and it includes a good outline from a recent team meeting. Yesterday was the fifth Orlando Code Camp put together by the good folks at the Orlando .NET user group. This was the fourth time that I've had the opportunity to speak at this code camp. There were over 500 registered before the event and there several walk on people who just showed up. The event took place at Seminole Community College in Sanford,...

First of all, let's admit that the biggest fear we all have when using a computer is a working computer. Let's eliminate any computer problems and go right to it. Deleting something and then later realizing that you didn't want to delete it. Like a page or module when using DotNetNuke. If you are an administrator of your DotNetNuke site, you can go to to Admin->Recycle Bin to do this. Over on the DotNetNuke site, you can view some of the help that they have there for this. Have you noticed the tiny graphic image aside of your address bar when you load up your DotNetNuke site in your browser that looks like this? By default, you'll have a file called favicon.ico located in your folder where you installed DotNetNuke. Many developers have learned how to change this ico file to another image that identifies your website and it's fairly easy to do. A favicon is seen by the browser aside of your URL. It's only 16x16 pixel square icon. Once you find the favicon.ico file in...
As I travel around speaking at Code Camps and talking to DotNetNuke users, it amazes me as to what version of DotNetNuke they are running their web portal on. With DotNetNuke version 5 being the future of DotNetNuke, there are many installs that are still running on version 3 and early versions of 4. I took the time to review the documented issues of past versions from the DotNetNuke site and in the future I plan on directing people to that site so they can see why they should upgrade to more current...

I just received an email that there are 72 sessions for this code camp and registrations should break 700. Several years ago, I spoke at this code camp in Ft. I look forward to seeing the co-authors for the new DotNetNuke version 5 book. Darrell Hardy, Ryan Morgan, and Stan Schultes will be presenting at the...

Yes, I'll admit, I'm a sucker when a new windows operating system comes out. After all, I come from the MS DOS era and witnessed the series of Windows products like version 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 3.1 aka NT, 3.11, 3.5, 95 (remember the lines at the store!), 4.0, 98, 2000, XP, Vista and now 7! After the installation, I quickly noticed how fast the install was. Now, I know this is a BETA version and I was wondering if this was stripped on purpose without the extras loaded in a final copy for this quick install....

Who would every believe that our local DotNetNuke user group membership would reach 100 online users. During the summer of 2007, I wanted to start a local DotNetNuke user group in our area. First of all, as a computer science trainer for many years, I'm biased to classroom training. As a trainer, you can see someone's eyes and determine if your students are learning concepts that you are teaching. I will adjust my presentation if needed so that the majority of the audience understands. There's always that minority that needs more help. Also, as a student, getting one on one help is the best way to learn. However, as you might know, there might not be a class in what you need to learn...

The Microsoft Community event had a great opening today at the Orlando Convention Center where Tech Ed has been going on all week. As I arrived and drove past the convention center, I noticed the lack of Microsoft advertising outside the building. What was nice about this event was that Joe Healy, the Florida Microsoft evangelist, was all over the place making...

The Orlando DotNetNuke User Group had a geat meeting on Saturday. The morning started early when Mike Webb and Dave Dyer made the trip in for 10 am from Vero Beach to Orlando. Dave was going to update the older version of DotNetNuke that Lake Highland Prep had running on their server to the current version and he wanted to view everything first before he started the intallation process. Dave had started the install process and just ran into one problem regarding the new folder structure and was able...
Joe Healy from Microsoft saw an opportunity to have a local event in Orlando, FL during the weekend of Tech Ed. This event is going to be big! It's being held at the Orlando Convention Center near the airport and all the local attractions. It's jam packed with technology events in just 2 days and best of all it's FREE. Joe asked me to head up the DotNetNuke track for Sunday, June 8th and I was able to get some great local speakers for the event. Mike Webb from DNNSPIRED.com volunteered to host the...
Today was extremely busy and exhausting as well. The routine here is to wake up early, grab a boxed breakfast and coffee in the huge ballroom at the hotel and then run off to where the buses are parked to take you to the Redmond Microsoft campus. I scheduled meetings with some Microsoft personnel today along with poking my head into some of the sessions that were going on at the Conference Center. I continued to evangelize computer science education and spoke with interested people about the concerns...
Well the weather in April is quite different than the weather in Orlando, FL at this time of year. However, I did notice that there is more color in the trees and plants even though it's cold. I spent most of the morning at an XNA workshop. Even though I'm an ASP.NET MVP, there are certain events that we can go to outside our area. It was interesting to listen to the XNA concerns that the MVP folks had. The speaker who is a senior manager mentioned XNA being used in colleges and that opened up the...
I arrived early at the airport and met up with our Microsoft local leader Joe, Devfish, Healy. Joe was in high spirits banging away on his keyboard at 7 am! Joe drove from Tampa to Orlando to take the Alaskan Airlines direct flight to Seattle. Joe feels so committed to the MVP program that he makes sure he has money in his budget to go to this event and hook up with the user group leaders at this event. Shawn Weisfeld, a C# MVP and Onetug leader, was next to arrive at the gate. We all boarded the...
Joe Healy from Microsoft came up with a brilliant idea which is to have a FREE Teched Tweener Weekend on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday June 8th at the Orlando Convention Center in Orlando, FL. These 2 days will be jammed packed with free sessions that you can attend. I've been asked to head up a DotNetNuke University for all day Sunday. If you are coming to Tech Ed and want to talk on that day, please let me know. Slots are filling up fast but I may have some available if you act now. More on this...
Will Strohl, also known as hismightiness on the DotNetNuke forum site, did a great job on Saturday at our user group meeting. Skinning is always a popular topic with those that use DotNetNuke. You need to decide to either purchase the many skins available on the DotNetNuke marketplace site or at snowcovered or to design your own. Designing your own requires some skill at graphics and skill at putting all the files together with the tokens you want to use and the css style as well. It's not for the...
It was nice to see that members of the Orlando DotNetNuke User Group were mentioned in the recent newsletter that Shawn Walker puts out. Under the section News Briefs you'll see Summer Training in Orlando Brian Scarbeau and DNNSPIRED owner teaming up for DNN training in June/July.. Also under User Activity you'll see that Will Strohl who goes by hismightiness is one of the top 10 posters on the dotnetnuke.com site. Way to go! User Activity Updated forum and registration stats from DotNetNuke.com:...
There were a couple of hundred Code Campers on Saturday in Heathrow, FL at Seminole Community College. The day was jam packed with 56 sessions and 13 tracks. Kudos to Microsoft MVP Shawn Weisfeld for organizing the event and running around to make sure everything was working correctly. Another kudos to Microsoft DevFish Joe Healy for always trying to hook you up with someone he knows that would be a good network contact for you. I heard that the infamous Microsoft Guru Russ Fustino was there but...

We had a good turnout today for our 2nd user group meeting. There were some new faces and we appreciated those members who came back for our 2nd meeting. Thanks to Mike Webb from DNNSpired.com he reviewed all the modules that his company sells and the ones that his company gives away free as well. Mike gave a live demo and showed us some cool features that his company has added on to the Users Online module and several others as well. Check out his site to see what his company has. Mike is very helpful...
I'll be teaming up with Mike Webb from www.cybreze.com to train users on DotNetNuke® this summer in Orlando, FL. Michael Webb has been building websites for large corporations, small businesses and individuals using DotNetNuke® since the beginning. His corporate experience spans over 24 years in sales and marketing with a focus on technology integration to allow businesses to provide top quality customer service and empower employees with the tools necessary to perform their tasks within their respective...
The Orlando Code Camp is currently looking for speakers and you can submit a session here. There were over 500 registered last code camp and it will be held on Saturday, March 22 at Seminole Community College in Sanford, FL. Here's the session that I submitted to present: Name of session: Best Resources to Learn DotNetNuke® Description: Now that you have downloaded DotNetNuke® how are you going to use it for your application. Where do you start? Where do you go for help? This session will have several...
There were eleven enthusiastic dotnetnukers who attended the first Orlando Dotnetnuke User group meeting at Lake Highland Prep School in Orlando today. Everyone has a different background of using dotnetnuke and all are eager tolearn more. The 1 1/2 hour meeting went by fast and after introductions we all agreed to meet on amonthly basis. Next month, on March 1, Mike Webb from DNNSpired.com will talk about the custom modules that his company has created. In April, Will Stohl will do an introduction...
If you are teaching a web design class and if you want your students to learn how to create a web portal using open source software called dotnetnuke then there is some curriculum that you can have for free. There's even a forum to post questions and you can download videos of the lessons to use to learn dotnetnuke. The curriculum will have your students create a web portal for Comp Sci High School. They will create pages and add modules to those pages. In addition, they will learn how to skin modules...

I have volunteered to start this local dotnetnuke user group. After speaking at a couple local Code Camps there are many users of dotnetnuke that are interested in this group as well so hopefully they will join. Here are reasons why you should join: Participating in a user group requires time, effort, leadership, dedication, and vision. However, ask almost any user group participant, and they’ll tell you it’s all worth it. Consider some of these reasons to get involved today: 1. Make friends.You’ve...
On Saturday, there were close to 500 people at the Orlando Code Camp. The local INETA group did an outstanding job organizing this event. This group volunteers countless hours to make sure local developers get a first class experience of learning. The registration went smooth and directions around Seminole Community College got everyone to where they should go. Carl Franklin gave an amusing keynote about his background and there were several great speakers during the day. I had the opportunity to...
Hats off to Shawn Weisfeld and his crew for organizing what seams to be a great upcoming code camp this Saturday at Seminole Community College in Sanford, FL. Shawn is a Microsoft MVP and INETA leader and I saw him in passing last week in Seattle at the MVP Summit. He was chanting code camp, code camp in the halls! To date, there are 478 coming to a great event. There will be 52 Sessions, 38 speakers including 16 MVPs and 9 Authors. Where else can you get that kind of education for free. Here's the...
I have a new group of web design students that I'll be teaching dotnetnuke to. The first thing we'll do today is to install dotnetnuke. The latest starter kit version 4.4.1 from dotnetnuke.com has eliminated some of the steps that it use to take to use this open source portal software. The previous version required you to physically attach the database to the project using Visual Web Developer. That step has been completely eliminated and a straight install will give you a portal right away. You...
I'll be speaking at this very popular code camp on Saturday, March 24th at Seminole Community College. My session will be on Best Practices to Learn Dotnetnuke. This session is geared toward helping you learn Dotnetnuke. Learn first hand how this Microsoft MVP was able to create a web portal for his students to use. He then developed curriculum for Microsoft Corporation. This curriculum is being used by high school and college students and is available to developers as well. Attend this session and...
Friday was the last day for my students and many of them had finished their dotnetnuke student web portal and were designing skins and containers. Some students didn't finish the complete portal and had a couple of lessons left to finish. Next semester, I'll give my students an additional week to start the lesson so all will be able to complete it. All in all, it was worth the time and effort to have my students create a professional portal using the tools that developers use in industry. One student...
This week my students were learning how to create a new container for their dotnetnuke site and how to skin as well. Creating a container requires students to create a css file that includes the font, family style and color of the heading that they want. .CompSciContainerTitle { font-weight:bold; font-size:200%; color:#339933; } An html file is then created which includes An html file is created which includes: [SOLPARTACTIONS][TITLE][VIS... [SOLPARTACTIONS][TITLE][VIS... these are dotnetnuke...
I have some videos that I created that I'd like to share with anyone interested. They follow the curriculum for the dotnetnuke coures I created. You can find the course here: https://www.mainfunction.co... You can find the videos here: http://www.lhps.org/scarbea... Enjoy
Well, my students have successfully created a small module of their own using Visual Web Developer Express and have placed them on their page so we are now continuing our learnign of dotnetnuke. We now review the dotnetnuke accounts that can be created. In addition, we'll review the roles of the administrator and the host. The students will learn to modify the css that comes with dotnetnuke. They will also create a new portal for the student website they will be creating in a week. Next week will...
Yesterday, I gave my students their first test on what we were doing in our web design class using dotnetnuke. I was quite happy with the grading and the class average was an 86! The students learned how to build parent and child pages and learned how to place modules on those pages and modify the settings as well. In addition, they learned how to upload 3rd party modules and use them on pages as well. They will be building their own modules next week in class. My fingers are crossed that the success...
Yesterday I lectured to my web design students about web programming with Visual Web Developer and Visual Basic .NET. None of these students have ever programmed a computer to do anything before this class. I emphasize that point because I firmly believe that all students should be exposed to programming during their academic life to fully appreciate how the technology they use on a day to day basis was created. The students were using Visual Web Developer with the creation of the Comps Sci High...
Because of my blogs on using dotnetnuke with my students, I received an e-mail from someone who works for an Employment Agency in New York. He was looking for some of my graduates who have exerience working with dotnetnuke. Needless to say, this was a great motivator to my students when I told them. However, when I e-mailed back to the agency they didn't realize that I was teaching high school students and not college students. Like I said, my students were really excited that someone was interested...
This week my students learned how to create main pages and child pages. In addition, they learned how to add modules on each page. They loaded third party modules that don't come with dotnentuke as well. They are building a high school web portal for Comp Sci High. We have encountered some changes in the modules that come with the newer version of dotnetnuke that were not in the older version of the portal open source software. For example, there use to be a discussion module and now there is a forum...
Now that all sites have been installed properly in the lab our learning begins. Students started to work on the CompSci High portal using dotnetnuke. They started to create pages and today they will add modules to some of the newly created pages. The curriculum has students using modules that come with dotnetnuke and some third party modules as well. By the end of next week, I'm hoping that the CompSci High site should be completed. Our voyage will then take us to learn how to create modules using...
Today I reviewed how to install dotnetnuke with my students. Word to the wise... Use the latest version of the starter kit. I ran into some problems today with some of my students who had the old version of the starter kit. The problem was a simple fix but with a class of 15 and only 45 minutes of class time, I didn't figure out what the problem was until the students left. I'll try to explain... The earlier version of the starter kit requires you to add a database to the project and to rename the...
Yesterday was the first day that I introduced dotnetnuke to my students. I'm using the curriculum that I wrote for Microsoft with them. I've discovered that there already are some changes in the dotnetnuke starterkit that was not there when I wrote the curriculum. The change is a good one because it makes an install to be a breeze without any modifications at all. In any event, I'll be blogging about the web design class that will be using the curriculum. The first day we talked about portals and...
This was a good assignment to do for my web design students. They have been learning how to create web pages with html and how to use dreamweaver to create pages and manage sites. In addition, they were trained on good design vs bad design. As mentioned in my last blog, this assignment was to review the 6 designs on Dan's blog and then review them as to what you liked about them and what you didn't. So here's what some of my students had to say about the designs: For the Coding4Fun website redesign,...
I came across computer science teacher at Ranchview High School Chris McNally's website that he created using dotnetnuke. On it, he has information about his courses, a blog, daily assignments, downloads and much more.Kudos to Chris for using dotnetnuke which is a free opensource web portal that you can download at dotnetnuke.com. You can find Ranchview's site at www.ranchviewcs.org. Over the summer, I completed some curriculum in dotnetnuke which other teachers could use with their students. Drop...
My idea about celebrating Computer Science Education Day on December 8th and with Daryll McDade's idea to celebrate Grace Hopper's Birthday seems to be catching on. I will be working with my colleagues at the Microsoft Faculty Advisory Board to help me organize activities that can be held that day for students. I'd like to have a poster contest of Grace Hopper's accomplishments along with an essay contest. I'm trying to get the Computer Science Teachers Association to support this idea as well. I'm...
A code camp! That's what was going on yesterday at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. This Microsoft event brings out developers from around the state to meet for a day and just talk about technology. There were several tracks to choose from and plenty of time to mingle with colleagues during the day and at night if you wanted. I had an opportunity to speak during one of the tracks on dotnetnukes modules. It was a lot of fun for me to do this. More importantly was the fact that I met...
The Florida Code Camp is this Saturday and I'm already getting psyched up about it! I'm speaking during one of the sessions and I'm on a panel during the day on various topics related to dotnetnuke. I'll place a link on my blog of the slides that I'll be using. The organizers do an excellent job of putting this together. If you happen to be in town, look us up
I read with great interest in the ACM Communication magazine, a letter from the President David A. Patterson. The article is entitled “Computer Science Education in the 21st Century.” His letter is based on his position statement for a workshop on the preparation of IT graduates for 2010 and beyond. His opening paragraph starts off by admitting that in the past we created obstacles to reduce the number of CS majors and he states” we should take advantage of reduced pressures from...
Stan Schultes and Russ Fustino( you know the Tool Shed guy) did a great job on their introduction to Dotnetnuke 4 webcasts yesterday. This was a live webcast out of Tampa, FL. Stan is a developer in the Sarasota FL area and a big evangelist for dotnetnuke. I had Stan on my webcast when I taked about dotnetnuke architecture. In fact, Stan was my teacher over a year and a half ago at the Orlando Ineta dotnetnuke bootcamp. Go to his site and check it out...
A Code Camp is basically an all day developer geekfest. There have been several of these CodeCamps in Florida and across the US. I had an opportunity to speak at a Code Camp that was held in Ft. Lauderdale last spring. It was a fun event usually held on a Saturday and its a FREE event too! This year there will be a Code Camp held on Saturday, March 25th at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. Joe Healy from Microsoft has been the leader of the Florida events and the agenda has always...
Today I had some time to install the latest version of dotnetnuke which uses ASP.NET 2.0. The installation was on a local pc and I must say it really was a breeze to install. I used the new starter kit that comes with this version and with instructions from Shawn Walker who is the leader of this open source project. Using Visual Web Developer is another plus especially for teachers who want to teach their students about web portals. You don't need to install IIs on each pc in the computer lab because...
Yesterday was the third dotnetnuke webcast that I presented. It was on creating your own module using Visual Studio .NET. I asked Michael Flanakin whose a professional developer join me on the webcast to answer any questions on the newer version of dotnetnuke. He did a great job and I thank him for sharing his knowledge. Michael had so much fun on the webcast that he'll be joining me next Tuesday when I'll be talking about creating your own skins. I've been quite surprised at how many people participate...
LEARNING HOW TO CREATE PORTALS USING DOTNETNUKE Brian Scarbeau Brian.Scarbeau@gmail.com The future of internet applications is based on the creation of portals to deliver web based services. Organizations that have a great deal of information are centralizing their applications by an information portal. More specifically they are solving their problem by creating an Enterprise Information portal to share information on databases over the web using applications that are created with object oriented...
The final week of the semester is finally here. This semester has been a good one so far and my web design students have learned a great deal about web design. I hope they continue studying about web design and take my advanced class where we learn about portals and work with dotnentuke. I will be working on web services for this final week. Some of the advanced students will complete all of the lessons in the CurliQue curriculum and some are only three or four lesson behind. I will introduce my...
Last week, I purchased the new Wrox Publisher ASP.NET book called Professional ASP.NET 2.0 by Bill Evjen, Scott Hanselman, Farhan Muhammad, S. Srinivasa Sivakumar, Devin Rader. The book was mentioned on Brian Goldfarb’s blog. Brian works with ASP.NET at Microsoft Corporation and he’s bright and super energetic. I’ve heard him talk on a couple of occasions and more recently heard him on a webcast that he did on stage with Steve Balmer at the VS Studio event in San Francisco. A couple...
Several years ago, my computer science students placed third at a local computer programming contest. They won a trophy along with a computer for the school to use as part of their prize. I beefed up the memory on the pc and turned it into a server for my dotnetnuke website and for student asp.net work as well. The server served its purpose and this month the computer science department purchased a new server because the old server was getting too slow for us to use. I had no idea how long it would...
For those of you who may be teaching web design or programming to your students I'll be posting on what I'm doing with my students with ASP.NET aka WebMatrix as I'm working with my students this term. I was teaching web design for ten years and realized that I have been teaching the same curriculum to my students. Web design has changed during that time which included css, dhtml, asp, etc but I wasn't teaching that to my students. After seeing ASP.NET three years ago I started to write some curriculum...
