Not sure if you need the Professional version of DotNetNuke?
The DotNetNuke web hosters at PowerDNN have put together a nice 3 minute survey to analyze your needs on what version of DotNetNuke that you might need to have. The survey has 3 categories. 1. Website Size 2. Website Usage 3. Project Details With an easy UI of drop down lists, you just answer the questions listed in each category and then submit them to the site. After you submit, you'll get reasons why you should use either the Community or Professional Edition of DotNetNuke. Here's an example of ......

DotNetNuke 04.09.04 Upgrade
In the past, after backing up my SQL database and DNN site, I'd hold my breath when I upgraded my sites hoping and praying that all will be well after the upgrade. Today, I did the same when I upgraded to version 04.09.04. Low and behold, all did go well with the upgrade and the site came back up after the upgrade. Here's what the upgrade has to offer: What's New in 04.09.04 Major Highlights Fixed a major module caching issue which resulted in empty content for webcrawlers Improved performance of ......

Why you should upgrade your DotNetNuke Installation
As I travel around speaking at Code Camps and talking to DotNetNuke users, it amazes me as to what version of DotNetNuke they are running their web portal on. With DotNetNuke version 5 being the future of DotNetNuke, there are many installs that are still running on version 3 and early versions of 4. I took the time to review the documented issues of past versions from the DotNetNuke site and in the future I plan on directing people to that site so they can see why they should upgrade to more current ......

South Florida Code Camp on Saturday
I just received an email that there are 72 sessions for this code camp and registrations should break 700. Several years ago, I spoke at this code camp in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and the numbers were very impressive. I remember code camps being small and very intimate but the need for knowledge is there and many people come out for them in recent years. I look forward to seeing the co-authors for the new DotNetNuke version 5 book. Darrell Hardy, Ryan Morgan, and Stan Schultes will be presenting at the ......

Finalizing chapters in new DotNetNuke 5 book
Christmas day was when I had a chance to review the final release of DotNetNuke 5 which was announced Christmas Eve. I quickly reviewed what I wrote about in my chapters for the new DotNetNuke 5 book and realized I had to add more and delete some information as well. I quickly shot off an email to the Wrox editor and begin to update my chapters. The first was What's NewUnder Admin/What's New, you'll find a new setting which gives you a summary of the major features for this DotNetNuke release. You ......

Microsoft makes the right move by lowering the price of Office
Starting in mid July, Microsoft will be selling Office by subscription. Including Office will be a security software program called Live One Care. The costs will be $70 a year. Even though Google has free web based programs that compete with Office, many students and teachers still prefer to use Office. This announcement is a win win and you can purchase the product at Circuit City. Technorati Tags: Office,Microsoft,Circuit City ......

Is anyone listening?
According to the Washington Post, industry executives fear there won't be enough new defense sector workers to replace those employees as they retire. The problem is that almost 60 percent of U.S. aerospace workers in 2007 were 45 or older could affect national security and even close the door on commercial products that start out as military technology, industry officials said. Another part of the problem is the fierce competition for a limited pool of math and science experts from all corners of ......

Vista one year later
Not much hoopla this year over the one year anniversary of Vista. In fact, when I was part of the Microsoft Foots program last year which allowed me to talk to customers at a popular Best Buy in Orlando, FL there was no excitement with customers when I showed them all the new features of Vista along with the new version of Microsoft Office 2007. I often wonder if Vista will ever get accepted at all. Sure all new notebooks have Vista installed on it but what about those PC's that could upgrade to ......

Etan Horowitz from the Orlando Sentinel talked about Tech Tips for students. Richard Connor from Laptop Plus dove into pc security and finally Dan Waters from Microsoft talked about the tablet pc and Onenote software. Lots of information in two hours time. Thanks to Microsoft for the donation of an XBOX ......

What I ended up doing after the AP exam with my students
I blogged about what AP teachers can do with their students after the AP exam but I found something else that I'll be doing with my students. Several years ago, Microsoft put together a half hour long reality game show called THE CODE ROOM. The show is hosted by Jesi Knapp. There were only three episodes that were created and the first show features Russ Fustino from Microsoft. Russ is giving his ASP.NET talk at a local theatre in Texas. Three participants volunteer to participate in a e-commerce ......

Digital Literacy Certificate Requirement for all High School Students
Alfred Thompson wrote in his blog about a Digital Literacy Curriculum program that Microsoft had on their site. I checked out the site and it covered 5 areas of study: Computer Basics The Internet and World Wide Web Productivity Programs Computer Security and Privacy Digital Lifestyles Each unit has an assessment test and then at the end there is a test that you can take and then print out a certificate when you finish. This semester, I'm requiring all my students to take this certificate exam. As ......

Getting ready for Windows Vista in Education
What is it about new things that aren’t out yet and you want to talk about them anyways? I’ve been thinking about the new features in Vista and how students can use them. I’ve also been thinking about school’s technology departments and how they will like or dislike Vista. Students will like the new interface. Who wouldn’t? They will also like the photo gallery to keep their pictures organized. It’s amazing how many pictures teenagers take! Many already use Flickr ......

Low tech in Maui
When I was recently in Maui, I noticed that this was a low tech island. No one walking around blabbing on their cell phone in restaurants and no blue tooth ear devices hanging off someone's ear. No one using a laptop at Starbucks?? I was fortunate enough to get a wireless connection from the condo that I was staying at. The wireless was wide open with no security installed. Before the trip, I went online to see where the hot spots would be on the island and there weren't that many. I'm sure many ......

Teaching with ASP.NET Day 8 and 9
It's very important as a teacher to make sure students follow written instructions when working with the Curlique lessons . Walk around the room and make sure students are working on their own vs having another student do everything for them. Even after lecturing to students about concepts and even after giving a demo of what they will be doing in class there will always be that student that doesn't get it. So what do you do? The first thing that I do as a teacher is to have the student do the lesson ......
