I stumbled across your posting by chance when searching the perspective of the half-full/half-empty glass. Somehow, your article enhanced my thoughts of optimistic/pessimistic and which is represented by what image.

Thanks

When I ask this question in my energy workshops I point out that possibly the answer really comes down to "Who is pouring...and who is drinking".

Really, I agree with Mike. It depends on if you are pouring at the moment, or drinking. I believe that unless and action is being performed upon the glass, then the liquid inside is just "half."

I agree that if it is being poured into or drunk out of at the moment, wether it is half full/empty changes, but if it is just sitting there, with no action having been done on it for a while, and none being apparent in the near future, I would refer to it as half empty, for the sole reason that if it has been at half for a while, then it is more likely to be emptied the next time something is done to it.

I recently read an article that posed a third perspective on the Half-Full or Half-Empty glass...

It simply made the observation that MAYBE the glass was too big! In other words, if the image of the glass represents our expectations (for whatever issue or program) perhaps we are expecting too much and the glass is really full or overflowing...

Food, or in this case, beverage, for thought...

the glass is half full. half empty is a stupid term.

half empty = 1/2*0 = 0

have fun characterizing people based on their response to this age-old but broken question.

It's obviously empty. I drank the rest. Would that make me a pessimist or optimist?

the answer is obvious when looked at from a different perspective. If someone were on a trip and they were at the halfway mark, are they half way back or halfway there? It's all about direction which is determined by previous circumstances. How did the water get to this point? If the glass was full and half of it was poured out it was on it's way to being emptied. So it is half empty. The same if it was empty and then being filled and stopped half way it is half full. The halfway term is deceptive. If you think I'm wromg, then e-mail me as I'f you're right then I may be wrong about other problems that I think that I have solved.

Oh no, this topic just begs questions like; why buy into this argument, why define what it is, why file it or box it as something that needs to be argued? Hmmm, semantics. how about just use one word in this argument ie equasion = half, and. Dont then describe ie full or empty, because that is what is confusing, its neither!!!

you are all wrong...you are focusing too much on the glass and what actions are being taken with regards to the glass and the liquid...what you should really be concerned with is that i'm just f***ing thirsty so get me some more!

the glass would never be half... it is impossible to find out exactly what half is...thus with percise measurement one can determine whether there is more then half the glass filled with liquid or less then half the glass filled with liquid...

thinking the discussion can end somewhere along those lines... cheers to all those people thinking about beer when asking the question...

The optimist says: The glass is half full :)

The pessimist says: The glass is half empty :(

The analyst says: Well, the glass contains 50% of (whatever is the stuff in it) :|

This is how I answer the "half empty/half full" question.

A: The glass is perfectly full, I only wanted exactly that amount.

I label myself as a true optimist.
maybe something more...

This old nut has been around a LONG time. It is useful for those dense few that believe that people can be separated into 2 groups (so shallow). Almost as ludicrous as horoscopes.
The FACT is that the glass is NEITHER half full nor half empty. The glass is FULL. The question is incorrectly formed. It SHOULD be, "Is the Glass Half Full or half empty of WATER (or whatever liquid)?" This shows that most people are ignorant of the nature of the atmosphere. The glass is completely full - partially with a liquid content, and partially with a gas. Unless the glass is in a vacuum in which case the water would still fill the entire container. I recommend that you read some physics, or maybe any middle school science class.
It is sad that the state of education in this world is so meager.

I think the glass becomes half full when you are filling it, but it becaomes half empty because it is on its way to becoming empty.

Some see the glass as half empty. Some see the glass as half full. I see it as a way to quench a thirst. Some like to think inside the box. Some like to think outside the box. I like to step outside the box and think.

Glass Half full / Half Empty answer should really depend on what is inside the glass and how big the glass is. If you think of the glass in terms of yourself, and the liquid or element as what you consume, then it would be important to know what kind of liquid or element is being consumed. You would want it to be more empty if it was a unsavory liquid or element. You would want it to be more full if it was a liquid or element that is enjoyable to consume. The size of the glass also determines if you would like there to be less or more of the liquid or element (whether you have a small orange juice glass, or you have a glass that holds a gallon).

How about I was asked this question back when I was in 4th grade and I simply replied that it doesnt matter becuase its the same thing and the teacher freaked out and sent me to the councelor's office and all of these specialists were called becuase they couldnt figure out why i said it was the same.......however when gas matters are concerned i always look at it as well im not quite to the red so im ok.....so i guess i see it as half full.

well if anyone had common sense and looked at it logically you'll see that real answer is that the glass is both half full and half empty!!!!! it can't be one or other for christ sake!!! so many stupid, ignorant fools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The glass is half full. Because if you had half of a full glass that would mean. 1/2*0 = 0.
Therefore the glass would be empty.
When the glass is half full the equation is. 1/2*(whatever measurement of liquid is in the glass) = half of the full measurement of liquid in the glass!
