Speaking of Starbucks

I’m not usually a Starbucks kind of guy.  I prefer the local coffee joint Uncommon Grounds (two locations in Albany and Saratoga).  They have real flavored coffees instead of syrup, and free wi-fi.  Oh, and you can use normal English words to place an order (ie. “I’ll have a large vanilla coffee.”) and they don’t always assume you mean latte.

I tried to talk the Starbucks talk, it went something like this:

Brandon: “I’ll have a Grande vanilla coffee please.”
Girl: “A latte?”
Brandon: “No, just vanilla syrup in regular coffee.”
Girl (incredulously):  “So just vanilla syrup in regular coffee?”
Brandon: “Yes please.”
Girl: “Room for cream?”
Brandon: “Sure.”
Girl (to other guy): “I need a double shot Grande vanilla syrup komodo dragon non-latte with room for cream.”

It’s seriously a whole different language.

Komodo Dragon is one of their coffee blends and is probably what they were brewing at the time... 4/17/2005 8:33 PM | Paul

Well that makes sense enough. But the whole encounter was just strange... and the words "Komodo Dragon" definitely caught me off guard. 4/18/2005 1:28 AM | Brandon Paddock

Yes, it's a bit ridiculous I agree, lol. I've been working there for about a month now and the lingo had me going nuts! I'm just now catching on to it. She shouldn't have said 'double shot Komodo Dragon' though, because that'd mean a double shot of expresso IN your brewed coffee! Were you bouncing off the walls that day? LOL
