Rating system added to the club's site

Over the weekend I finished up a rating system for book on the .NET Book Club site along with other things. I also added a chapter preview portion to the book detail pages so you can preview a book before purchasing. I now need to work with the publishers to get more, but if there is a book you would like to see a preview for that we don't have, please email us.

Microsoft Book Club Webcast - Bill Evjen

The first book club webcast is has been announced. Bill Evjen's ASP.NET 2.0 Beta Preview will be the first featured book of our club to have a live webcast where you will be able to interact with the author while he discusses the topics of the book. During the webcast, John Alexander and Jeff Julian will interview the author, then hand it off for a session specifically about the book's topics. These webcast events will happen on a monthly basis with the book club's featured books.

One of the best reads of this autumn season is Keith Brown's The .NET Developer's Guide to Windows Security. If you haven't checked out this, I highly suggest you do. In fact, the .NET|BookClub is proud to have it as the Featured Book of the Month for November. Also, be on the lookout for some BIG news coming from the .NET|BookClub in the coming months.

Description of The .NET Developer's Guide to Windows Security

Making applications secure has been one of the biggest priorities of Microsoft developers. However, very few books have been written for developers; most security books are aimed at administrators. Surprisingly enough given this focus on security there is not yet a leading book on .NET security. Keith Brown is one of the most respected names in the field, and has written the first book to explain how to make Windows Server 2003 applications secure using .NET. Furthermore, it is written in the format which has proven so successful for Scott Meyers and others: it is made up of 75 brief items which build on the previous ones, giving developers of all levels a complete, deep understanding of what tools are available, and how to use them to create secure applications for Windows.

I am pleased to announce the Featured Book of October is ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook, written by Steve Smith and Rob Howard.

Steve Smith, host a weblog about serving in Iraq. Steve is the founder of many different communities we all know and love.
Rob Howard, formerly of the ASP.NET team, has recently founded Telligent Systems, a custom software provider specializing in Microsoft technologies.

As a book club, we like to feature recently released books. The problem is, there is not definitive feed for books coming out within the year. If you are planning to release a book before the summer of 2005 and want to have it featured at sometime by the book club, please let us know. Just send the title, ISBN, author list, and publisher.

Our book review system is now integrated directly into the site. To view our reviews, go to the "Book" menu and pick a category from the "Reviews" sub-menu. Next step is forums integration and a book search.

Expert C# Business Objects - Discussion Open

The discussion is open for our latest Featured Book! The Author, Rocky Lhotka, will be available for questions and comments so feel free to ask anything. We are also working on a Webcast/Chat at the end of September to discuss the topics of the book and some of the conversations we pick from the forums. Adding Pieces

Tonight, I added the user profile maintenance and a book detail page to the new book club system. Here are a few samples. After using portals and working on existing web applications, I forgot how much work it takes to build something from the ground up. Especially when you are working on a hardcore deadline that you set yourself.

This definitely is not the final product, but it does the basics we need. Now you can register yourself and a group or view available groups. The next push of functionally will be assign yourself to a group and a group admin tools. Tell me what you think, and if you see any issues, please report them.
