Goals for 2014

This is getting published a little bit late (month and a half into 2014 already) but I still wanted to get this posted. Once again I’m setting some goals for myself for the year and posting them here publicly. You can read my past years goals (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and retrospectives (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) as well. So with that let’s dive in. Professional Blogging – I’m coming up on 5 years of blogging in a few months. Hard to believe it has been that long but as long as I have things to share ......

Goals for 2013 Retrospective

This is my fourth year of setting goals publicly on my blog (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and going through a retrospective at the end of the year (2010, 2011, 2012). So without further ado here is my recap of 2013 goals. Year in Review 2013 will probably be the biggest year in my life as it is the year I got married to my wonderful wife Sarah. Other notable events include getting promoted to Senior Premier Field Engineer at Microsoft, two of my sister-in-laws having babies, and helping out with some ......

I Finished My First 5k Run

This post is a bit more personal than most. Two weekends ago my fiancé and I (along with two friends) completed our first 5k run. To many people this may not sound like a big deal, but to me it was a very significant event. Below is the story why. History When I was a junior in high school I started to have pain in my right hip when I ran or was on my feet for extended periods of time. At the time I was in track doing shot put and discus which are very demanding on your leg joints and muscles. When ......

Goals for 2013

Another new year, another set of goals. Over the past few years I have set goals (2010, 2011, 2012) and done retrospectives at the end of the year (2010, 2011, 2012). This year already has a number of big changes in the pipeline but I’m trying to introduce a few other changes with the goals I am setting. Professional Work local more – If you’ve been reading my blog the past year and a half you’ve probably heard me write that my new role as Premier Field Engineer with Microsoft has me traveling quite ......

Goals for 2012 Retrospective

Now in my third year of an annual tradition I have set goals (2010, 2011, 2012) and gone through retrospectives (2010, 2011). So here goes a recap on the year that was 2012 and how I stacked up against my goals. Year in Review Similar to 2011, 2012 was a big year for me. In 2012 I proposed to my now fiancé Sarah (pictures), I completed my first year with Microsoft as a Premier Field Engineer, my middle brother got married, my oldest brother and his wife had a baby, Sarah’s sister and husband found ......

Productivity Tips

A few months ago during my first end of year review at Microsoft I was doing an assessment of my year. One of my personal goals to come out of this reflection was to improve my personal productivity. While I hear many people say “I wish I had more hours in the day so that I could get more done” I feel like that is the wrong approach. There is an inherent assumption that you are being productive with your time that you already have and thus more time would allow you to be as productive given more ......

What I’m Up To: November 2012

This is a short personal post to let any regular readers know what I’m up to (and why I’ll be in reduced blogging mode for a bit). Writing 2 chapters for a SharePoint 2013 book (more to announce closer to publish date) Doing research, proof of concepts, and testing for above said writing Developing a SharePoint PowerShell diagnostic script to clean up issues found by the Health Analyzer Prepping for teaching SharePoint 2013 content to customers There are some other community and personal commitments ......

My First Published Book Is Out

Wow, today is an exciting day for me: I’m officially an author of a published book. The book is titled Microsoft SharePoint 2010: Creating and Implementing Real-World Projects. Here is the blurb from the back cover: Build effective solutions for real-world business scenarios—using out-of-the-box tools in Microsoft SharePoint Server, SharePoint Foundation, and Office 365. What I Pack In My Travel Backpack

Disclaimer:, The views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything. A number of friends having been posting about what they pack into their work travel backpack lately. Since I started traveling frequently with Microsoft I’ve been slowly gathering various pieces of equipment for my own backpack. I’m at a fairly stable point and felt ready to share my list. Note that my backpack is intended for a heavy amount of week long travel with a ......

Goals for 2012

For the past two years I have made goals for myself (2010, 2011) and I am once again making a public list of my goals for the upcoming year. As I mentioned in my retrospective on 2011 last week I have had quite a few major changes over the past year. Moving forward into 2012 I am taking these into consideration when looking at my goals. Without further delay here are my goals for 2012., Professional Goals Blog – I will continue to keep up writing this blog at least 2 posts a month. I continue to ......

Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” App Recommendations

Disclaimer:, The views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything. I am also an employee of Microsoft but try not to drink the Kool-Aid too much. [Update 2012-01-02: It appears posting Windows Phone app recommendations is making the rounds on the web today. My friends Jeff Blankenburg and Sarah Dutkiewicz have also posted recommendations. Also was referred to a posting on tested.com. I’ve already downloaded a few apps based on these ......

Goals for 2011 Retrospective

Now that 2011 has come to a close I wanted to take a few minutes to review the year and the goals I had set at the beginning of the year (click here to see those goals). I’ll follow up with new goals for new 2012 year soon. Year in Review 2011 was a big year in many ways. This year included a change in employers, buying a condo, my oldest brother getting married, starting a new relationship with my girlfriend Sarah. helping plan 2 conferences, writing two chapters of a book, and numerous other activities. ......

Life Is Full Of Changes (Part 2)

In my last post (read here) I mentioned that I recently took a position with a new company. Starting yesterday my new position is with Microsoft as a SharePoint Premier Field Engineer (PFE). I’m very excited about this opportunity as it will provide me a new set of challenges, a great network of some of the brightest minds in the industry, and a chance to grow myself while supporting clients. I will be traveling more than I did previously, but I will still be based out of Columbus, OH. As I said ......

Life Is Full Of Changes (Part 1)

Today will be my last day with Sogeti. I’ve been with Sogeti USA for just over 4 years. In that time I’ve gotten to work on some great projects, develop relationships with some brilliant and passionate people, participate in the .Net developer and SharePoint communities, and grow my skills in a number of areas I’m passionate about. As with all good things they must come to an end though. I’ve accepted a position with another company and will provide more details once the transition has completed. ......

Goals for 2011

Recently I posted a recap of my goals from 2010. Now it’s time to post my goals and focus areas for 2011. Just as I did in 2010 I’m splitting goals between professional and personal. Professional Blog – I intended to continue blogging at least twice a month, sometimes more frequently when time and motivation allows. I have begun looking at other platforms or distribution methods for my blogging and will continue to investigate those. I’ll post details on here if anything changes. Speaking – In 2010 ......

Goals for 2010 Retrospective

As we approach the end of 2010 I’d like to take a few minutes to reflect back on this past year and revisit the goals that I set for myself at the beginning of the year (click here to see those goals). I feel it is important to track your goals not only to see if you accomplished them but also to see what new directions in life you pursued. Once we enter into 2011 I’ll follow up with a new post on goals for the new year. Professional Blog – This year I intended to write at least 2 posts a month. ......

Reduced Blogging For A Few Weeks

I typically post technical content on this blog, but I have a personal note this time around. As some of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook may know, last week I found out I fractured my right index knuckle and strained a ligament between my index and middle finger. In order to heal this injury I’ll be wearing a cast for the next 3 1/2 weeks. This is day 4 and I’m starting to get used to it, but my typing speed is still reduced and causes pain over long usage. As such I am cutting back on a ......

Co-Authoring a Book and Guest Blog Post Coming Soon

A few posts ago you may have read that I have a few side projects going on that would be taking up my time the next few months. I can’t give you full details on many of those yet, but I did want to drop a little information as I’ve been getting questions from friends lately. The first thing that I’m working on is a writing two chapters for a book coming from a big (at least in the SharePoint world) publisher. This project came about because of some great connections I’ve made in the SharePoint community ......

PowerShell Interview on Technology and Friends

Three weeks ago at the Central Ohio Day of .Net 2010 conference (my recap here) I was approached by one of my Sogeti coworkers David Giard to do a guest interview on PowerShell for his popular video series Technology and Friends. If you’ve never gotten a chance to see this series, in each episode David interviews a special guest on topics ranging across all forms of technology. David even puts in some nice production value with music, overlays, and a special unique ending. His series is a great way ......

Motorola Droid App Recommendations

Just as a disclaimer, the views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything. Ok, so I’m one of the crazy few who went out and bought a Droid the week it was released a few months back. The Motorola Droid was a MAJOR upgrade in phone capabilities for me as my previous phone had no GPS, no web access, limited apps, etc. I now use my Droid for so much of my life from work to personal to community based events. Since I’ve been using my Droid ......

Work Is Like A Box Of Chocolates

Aside from the facts that I’m blatantly ripping off borrowing from the movie Forrest Gump and also straying away from my usual technical content, I had a notion this morning that I felt like I needed to explain. In case you missed a tweet of mine from earlier today, here it was. http://twitter.com/BrianTJa... Now you might be saying to yourself “I know exactly what he means” or “I don't know what the heck he means”. Never fear, that’s why I’m here to explain. First things first, ......

How I Blog

After my last post about goals for 2010 when I realized it has been over 6 months since I started blogging, I began to think about my blogging process and how it has changed over that time. I’ve made quite a few changes and upgrades to various portions of my blogging process over that time. Here’s a quick overview of where I’m at now as well as some tips for those of you thinking about starting up a blog but not knowing where to start. Tools Live Writer – Based on various buzz from other bloggers ......

Goals for 2010

Updated 2010/1/6 – added Android Development In the past few days I’ve been catching up on various blogs and ran across a few listing goals for 2010 (notably Matt Nowack and Jeremiah Peschka.) As in years past I’ve made goals for myself, but this year I’d like to formalize them and revisit this at the conclusion of this year to see how well my grit and determination stood up. Similar to Jeremiah I have a PDP (personal development plan) that contains work related goals I work towards and update throughout ......
