Shannon Bray is moving on up…
A guy I have known for over 4 years now is going places. I met Shannon at a contract I was working for a previous employer and quickly noticed that we both had many of the same interests and skills. Since then we have kept in contact and always seem to be pushing each other to one up the other in things like certifications, new technologies, or even interesting client engagements. Recently he came to work with me at Qortex as a Senior Solutions Developer and Microsoft Certified Trainer. Needless...

This isn't quite a Silverlight thing, but it came to 'light while debugging a problem that ultimately began with Silverlight. Many of us are using WebServices with Silverlight, and what starts out small has a tendency to grow up on us... and that's what happened to my OutlookBar code. Read the article to see how to resolve the "Maximum Length Exceeded" error. Stay in the 'Light! The Journey of the Aang has ended, the Avatar's just begun
The final episodes of the Avatar were shown in a two-hour block on Nick tonight. Let me tell you; if you are an Avatar fan, you won't be disappointed. This was simply one of the best series in TV history, and the ending perfectly capped it off. Sheri and I have been watching it since pretty much the beginning, and we've watched the series flow. There are times when we are watching the series and one of us would say "Hey, remember when....". We've loved the show, and thought the series end episodes...

Scrum / Agile Development: A Renaissance of Culture Through the Eyes of Levi-Strauss
On weekends, I tend to go off tangent, and this weekend is no exception.  I started to read some of the works of Levi-Strauss, the structural anthropologist, and it occurred to me that many of the positive changes from Agile Development are not merely the result of greater business focus.  Agile also develops culture in a field that is generally devoid of culture. This can be a stabilizing factor for companies by - Reducing turnover by empowering team members. - Creating rituals, taboos, and...

    EnterpriseArchitecture.co.uk
EnterpriseArchitecture.co.uk is my new blog for taking deeper dives into the practice of Enterprise Architecture. Don't worry I will still be posting on GWB but this is an effort to reach out to a new audience who are also Enterprise Architects, this will also be a place for them to get involved and interact as this space will not just be my blog but will grow into complete reference resource. Once I have work it out, I will be starting a forum and letting other bloggers co-habit this cool URL with...

Virtual Earth - Draw Rectangle with Mouse Co-ordinate..
As with most spatial operation, every ESRI - ArcGIS / Mapobjects developer or end user in the GIS world prefer a spatial selection by drawing a rectangle or a polygon. Off-course its easy with desktop application, Try that with a javascript, its different challenge. I have started working on a Virtual Earth with MOSS project recently and I must say Iam definetly impressed compared to Google earth / Google Maps. I will post another article shortly after this on comparing the two products and my...

    PDC for Novices, 2008 Edition
I started doing these a few years ago for Tech·Ed (2008 and 2007) and received a lot of good feedback so I decided to continue the series for PDC as well. Session Types This year PDC is offering a slightly different mix of session types with what they are calling “UnSessions”. The bottom line is that UnSessions are everything that isn’t an official breakout session. If you’re still a bit confused, keep reading to see the differences. There may be some other session types once the schedule has been...

    50064 Advanced SharePoint Developer Course
It has been a long time since my last post, but I have good reason. I have been terribly busy trying to complete a really cool project for one of my clients. I will post more about it in a later entry, but to say the least it has been quite an adventure. Anyway that is not the point to this blog. I thought I would put a little ditty together about a course that I am going to be teaching at AmeriTeach here in Denver coming up in September. It is the 50064 Advanced SharePoint Developer course. You...

    OutTwit
Twitter is an interesting phenomenon. I first started using it in April at the MVP Summit. Since then, as anyone who is following me has seen, my use has been intermittent at best. The biggest reason is that I haven’t found a Twitter client that I liked that allowed me to use Twitter in a way that was not only natural (at least for me) but from within tools that I was already using and in front of me. The other day I decided to download OutTwit and have found it to fit almost all of my needs. There...

    Product Review: uCertify PrepKit
I recently took a look at the PrepKit offerings from uCertify. If you aren’t familiar with uCertify, they make practice exams and test preparation packages for a pretty extensive range of IT certifications including Microsoft, Oracle, CompTIA, Cisco, and Sun. The interesting thing about the uCertify PrepKit is that they are completely exam/quiz oriented. You can download a trial version of the PrepKit which includes 30 questions and then purchase the full PrepKit directly from within the “PrepEngine”....

Disk Cleanup Utility should delete temporary .Net files.
I noticed that one of our servers with low disk space a lot of  security.config.cch files(or security.config.cch.number) in individual user folders, as well as in .Net.Framework config directories. According to the thread http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1228604.php -it seems they are safe to delete. But why they are located in config folder, not in some temporary directory, like NET\Framework\{version}\Temporary ASP.NET Files folders? And they should be suggested for deletion by standard...

Links:How to save html file to PDF
I want  to save html file generated by ASP.NET to PDF. I was pointed to itextsharp open source project. I found a few links, discussing how to do it: http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t72716-using-itextsharp-to-generate-pdf-from-aspnet.html  iTextSharp Tutorial Chapter 7: XML and (X)HTML  iTextSharp Demo(asp.net 2.0):http://rubypdf.com/itextsharp/tutorial01/ap07Chap0707.cs.html introduces HtmlParser.Parse. Call Synchronous Web Services Methods Asynchronously
I need to asynchronously call a few web services at the same time. VS 2005/2008 Web services proxy  generator creates several proxy class methods , including synchronous MyWebMethod(parameters) and asynchronous pair BeginMyWebMethod(parameters) and EndMyWebMethod(parameters) The way to use Begin/End methods is described in article "Calling Web Services Asynchronously "    Even if I am going to use asynchronous method in the real application, for unit testing(including TestHarness ) it is much...

    Paradigm Over Technology
All too often in the software industry, if you are one that follows the latest tools and technologies, you risk getting pigeonholed as the guy who only wants to play with the latest toys. One of the typical sayings being that tools only accelerate your rate of failure (or success)..blah blah blah… While this is true for some technologists, there are those that look beneath the surface of a technology and truly connect with the problems the new offering is attempting to solve. Most of the time in...

    eBay no speaky english
I've had a bit of a problem with ebay lately: my account of 10 years has been suspended indefinitely by mistake. This is what happened: I logged onto ebay using a shared PC that a suspended ebay member had been using earlier. After 10 years on ebay I've used many shared PCs and I've never had a problem, but this time within hours I recieved the following email:   Gasp! My 10 year account gone in the blink of an eye! So I did what anyone would do, I contacted tech support. One would...

    PDC 2008
I just registered for Microsoft PDC 2008 in LA, October 27-30. This will be my second PDC and the first one I’ve been to as an MVP. There are supposed to be a lot of really interesting things announced at this one, so it should be an exciting time. I know I will be at the Party with Palermo on October 26, and there will probably be a Florida (and Friends of Florida) MVP geek lager one night as well. Not sure what else is going on, but if you’re going look me up.         Technorati...

    NINE Questions with Jason Olson
Sorry folks... only 1 interview this week. I've been busier than Gil Gerard at a one hour buffet. Our guest this week is my very good friend Jason Olson. Jason works for Microsoft now, but I knew him when... although that's a story for another day.  Here are my NINE Questions with Jason Olson. 1. Where are you from? Now, Kirkland, WA (just outside of Seattle). As a child I was from McMinnville, OR (which had the adoring nickname of McHickville). And no, I'm not a hick. 2. Ok so...

    Visual Studio 2008 and TargetFrameworkVersion
A question was asked yesterday in one of the CodeProject discussion forums by someone looking for a way to easily change the Target Framework version of all projects in a solution. If you don’t know, the Target Framework version is what tells the compiler which version of the .NET Framework to compile against (more information is available here) and can be set to one of the following values: .NET Framework 2.0 .NET Framework 3.0 .NET Framework 3.5 This can be easily accomplished by...

    Chris Williams with Hair?!?!
I stumbled across this video and if I didn't know better, I'd swear it was Chris...with hair!  Maybe it's just me, but I think it looks a lot like a moonlighting Mr. Williams. Chris, if you're thinking about quitting your day job and singing - I'd say go for it.  Not because I think you'll make it with pipes like this, but you're obviously passionate about the "Rainbow Road".  Your passion will carry you far!   Technorati Tags: chris williams, rainbow road, terrible singing...

Excellent Article on WCF Channel Development and WCF Framework Extensibility
This is very old news, but it's worth repeating. The highly respected WCF Sensei -- Nicholas Allen -- has an excellent article on the binding stack in WCF, how WCF is extensible, and specifically, where and how you can customize these points.  I've been looking for this kind of treatment of WCF customization for some time.  I really could have used it when I was struggling with building a custom interop solution for a client, but alas.  Regardless, I'm noting it here for posterity and for anyone...
