Deploying Pipeline Components in a CI Build
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman] Most of the interfaces you implement for a pipeline component are boilerplate code, so I tend to put them in a base class and just override what's needed. If the base class is in a separate assembly from other pipeline components, and you're using a CI build process to build them all, you may have an issue getting your subsequent pipeline projects to build. In a typical MSBuild script, I'll get the projects from the solution file(s), and then:...

London .NET User Group - CI Factory talk
Thanks to all who attended the London .NET User Group meeting last night, a great turnout and lovely weather for slurping beers in the streets of Clerkenwell afterwards. As promised you can download the slidedesk for my CI Factory grok talk from here, and if yoiu want an extended version I'm presenting at NxtGenUG in Oxford on Wednesday 6th August.  In the one hour or so I'll hopefully have time to actually create a SubVersion repository, edit the CI Factory setup file to create a new build server...

Timeout Error When Upgrading SPS 2003 Content Database - I've tried Everthing!
Man, this issue has been kicking my butt all day.  We've been working on a SharePoint 2003 upgrade (testing) and got to the final content database.  Life was good up to this point.  110GB of content had upgraded and there were just a few hiccups, mostly related to size.  Then, it came.  The nasty, evil, dispicable:  Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. Over and Over... Basically what's happening from what we can tell...

In case you haven't heard, there's a programming contest going on. It's the Silverlight Control Builder Contest and you've still got time to play for fabulous prizes and the awe of your fellow geeks! I'm gonna enter. Are you? Wait, you haven't had the chance to mess around with Silverlight? Neither have I! Won't it be fun...

    Outlook Connector
The last time I wrote about the Outlook Connector it was to talk about the lack of Calendar synchronization and the fact that a new version of the connector was in internal Microsoft testing. I am happy to announce that the new version is out of internal testing and is available as a public beta. This new version synchronizes with your Windows Live Hotmail or Microsoft Office Live Mail accounts, including e-mail, contacts and calendars. I installed the new version and so far it works great. It...

Calling for Volunteers Who want to Help with the SharePoint Nation Comic
I bought a different domain, because 1and1 kind of took away my customer id for my hosting account after not signing up for three months.  The url is now http://www.sharepointcomic.com.  If you notice there is a shelled out WSS 3.0 Team Site.  We finally have something available for people to see.  Now I need to find some people who are willing to create logos and brand the site.  If anyone is interested fill out the contact form or e-mail me directly if you know my information.  Anyone with ideas...

    DLR Hosting
Was talking to a DLR Team member and stumbled upon his blog which interestingly focuses on DLR Hosting and how you can start writing a host for DLR.  Here below is the link to his blog. http://blogs.msdn.com/seshadripv/ If you are new to DLR, is it the Dynamic Language Runtime that would be a layer on top of CLR for creating and running Iron Python and Iron Ruby (currently limited, but extending to other languages in future) on .NET. DLR would also be supported in Silverlight 2, currently in Beta...

    So What's This Then?
And here it is. Another blog. Seems like everyone has one these days. Except me. ...Until now. So yeah, I've finally decided to enter the blogosphere, whatever that is. It's not like there's anything roundish about the folks who write blogs. Except maybe near the belly. Ahem. Where was I? Oh, yes, blogging. So yeah, I'm blogging now. Mostly this blog will involve me posting about my pain developing software and the salves I used to soothe it. It will mostly be C# oriented, 'cause that's...

    MSI Compilation Error
While building a new Web Deployment project, I received the error "Unable to build project output group 'Content Files from (Active)." I checked all of my settings and everything seemed to be correct. I found a support article on Microsoft's Help and Support site describing why this occurs. Apparently, if you have missing files in your project this will happen. In this case, it turns out that a folder of images had been moved in the source tree but not in the project file. This was causing them...

I've built quite a few WSS / MOSS machines and one task that I always seem to do is create a simple CMD shell prompt on the desktop (quick launch, etc.) that gives me easy access to STSADM and has the path set correctly.  So in the interest of saving time I've created a simple VBScript file located here as well as the full listing below   Set Shell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set Env = Shell.Environment("PROCESS") DesktopPath = Shell.SpecialFolders("Desktop") Set link...

Quality Center: Adding Requirements via API
I am working on a tool to extract requirements from docs produced by our Business Analysts. It will then take the extracted requirements and put them in Quality Center as requirements. I thought this would be fairly straightforward, as the Requirements are handled in the same way that other objects types are. The objects are created via factory objects implementing IBaseFactory. Calling the AddItem method returns an instance of the object, either a new one or one pre-existing. The AddItem method...

    Team System Rocks Logo Contest
So, Team System Rocks is about to undergo a facelift in a couple of months.  And I would LOVE to have a new logo for the site.  However, I am "graphically impaired".  So I thought I would see if there was anyone out there who could create me a new logo.  And what better way to generate interest than with a contest? So, here is the deal:  Team System Rocks needs a new logo.  I will use the logo on the site, and maybe on any materials I may make in the future (such as T-shirts, etc...).  As far as...

    Functionality beside Argument
The 'first do this, next do that' is a short phrase which really in a nutshell describes the spirit of the imperative paradigm. Web services are the killer application for XML, with reference to Implicit Anticipation over Empty Techniques. Using environments to emulate references limits the granularity of references to fields. The paradigm originates from a purely mathematical discipline: the theory of functions. If a method does not contain non-transportable types, it can be offered in...

C# Reflection Tips: Data transformation using Reflection
.NET Reflection can be quite handy to transform one object to another, and specially when the target data structure varies a lot. Lets say, a "source party" has a stable Source data structure. But different clients have different requirement and expects to served with data in different format. These clients may pass their object instances in their own format and expect to be served with data in their structure. Let me make up an Example here:  Source Data Structure which is consistent and never...

Why I am sold on User Stories.
I've tried Use Cases and seen them not work. The main reason? They are really heavy handed and developers hate updating them. Customers don't even want to see them. A manager telling me to update the use cases or the functional spec is akin in my mind to someone I don't know telling me to take my medicine. I am one of those annoying developers who is going to ask, "Why am I doing this?" And bad news, if you don't have a good answer, I am going to look at you cross-eyed. Developers in general...

    Missing changeset <-> build associations
This really bit me recently, so I want to point it out. You can read Martin Woodward's post here: http://planetscm.org/user/22/tag/tfs%20top%20tip/, but I've copied the jist of it below. Basically, TFS 2008 will not associate any changesets to the first build for a Build Definition. This means that if you create your branch, then create a corresponding Build Definition, then make a bunch of changes to the branch (i.e. the changesets) BEFORE running your first build, all those changesets will never...

    Caligari trueSpace 7.6 for FREE?!?
If you're a 3D kinda guy, which I'm not (well, I'm getting there, but it's a slow journey) then you might be interested in this. Apparently, Caligari is giving away their trueSpace 7.6 product for free for a limited time. Here's the marketing fluff: What you may not expect is that we are making trueSpace7.6 available to everyone at no charge, in a giant step forward to bring high-end 3D authoring tools to all who want them! trueSpace7.6 is far more than a SketchUp-style...

    Cooking Maps....Medium-Rare
Hooray!  I got my 2 gb RAM in the mail last night and quickly installed them.  RAM is interested in that there isn't an immediate difference in the way my computer performs.  Does it boot up quicker?  Not noticably.  But, I was running UnrealEd last night with iTunes, something I did a few days before and it literally almost froze my whole system.  Now I can easily run both with the only noticeable problem being build time in Unreal is longer when iTunes is going (probably cause my CPU is only a...

    Silverlight Cream for July 24, 2008 -- #333
Mark Monster on Networking, Rich Griffen on Tweening and Baby Smash, Matt Perdick using WrapPanel, Bart Czernicki on SL and Multi-touch panels, Corinna Barber with 3 videos on Designer/Developer, Dan Wahlin on layouts, Laurence Moroney's SL2 book is out, and Bill Reiss on developing games for SL and XNA, and a SL Game contest. I didn't get this out on Wednesday because I was doing a presentation for a bigshot from my client's East Coast office, and oh... he didn't show, and he didn't call, and...

    Mathcing Braces with Regex
3 years ago, I wrote this post: http://regexlib.com/REDetails.aspx?regexp_id=1135. It contained a .Net regular expression that would match the highest level of matching braces, something that is needed more often than not when parsing languages. It will also return null if no matching braces are found. Finally, as an added bonus, it will ignore braces that are escaped with a backslash. Soon after I posted it, someone commented on it being impossible, because Finite Automatas can’t count. I didn’t...

Apps Expire from Local Cache, part 2
Even though I'm no longer involved with group policy, I'm still the go-to guy for issues. Got a call this morning from a helpdesk guy who was working an issue with Add New Programs not populating.  He'd dug through RSOP and found that two apps had failed to remove. (More specifically, RSOP showed the yellow bang on User Configuration/Software Settings/Software installation, with these two listed as "Removed Applications").  The details for these two apps specified "The removal of xxx from policy...

    Dependency Management
The Challenge Imagine a development shop that maintains 100 .Net solutions, each composed of multiple projects. Imagine roughly half of these being shared domain services or shared common libraries, the other half being end web applications servicing multiple large clients.  Imagine any given project having the ability to reference classes/methods on any suitable re-usable service.   Imagine trying to get a grip on it all - a gr
