Links:How to save html file to PDF
I want  to save html file generated by ASP.NET to PDF. I was pointed to itextsharp open source project. I found a few links, discussing how to do it: http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t72716-using-itextsharp-to-generate-pdf-from-aspnet.html  iTextSharp Tutorial Chapter 7: XML and (X)HTML  iTextSharp Demo(asp.net 2.0):http://rubypdf.com/itextsharp/tutorial01/ap07Chap0707.cs.html introduces HtmlParser.Parse. We tried to use it. HtmlParser.Parse does NOT throw any error , but the pdf file...

Call Synchronous Web Services Methods Asynchronously
I need to asynchronously call a few web services at the same time. VS 2005/2008 Web services proxy  generator creates several proxy class methods , including synchronous MyWebMethod(parameters) and asynchronous pair BeginMyWebMethod(parameters) and EndMyWebMethod(parameters) The way to use Begin/End methods is described in article "Calling Web Services Asynchronously "    Even if I am going to use asynchronous method in the real application, for unit testing(including TestHarness ) it is much...

    Paradigm Over Technology
All too often in the software industry, if you are one that follows the latest tools and technologies, you risk getting pigeonholed as the guy who only wants to play with the latest toys. One of the typical sayings being that tools only accelerate your rate of failure (or success)..blah blah blah… While this is true for some technologists, there are those that look beneath the surface of a technology and truly connect with the problems the new offering is attempting to solve. Most of the time in...

    eBay no speaky english
I've had a bit of a problem with ebay lately: my account of 10 years has been suspended indefinitely by mistake. This is what happened: I logged onto ebay using a shared PC that a suspended ebay member had been using earlier. After 10 years on ebay I've used many shared PCs and I've never had a problem, but this time within hours I recieved the following email:   Gasp! My 10 year account gone in the blink of an eye! So I did what anyone would do, I contacted tech support. One would...

    PDC 2008
I just registered for Microsoft PDC 2008 in LA, October 27-30. This will be my second PDC and the first one I’ve been to as an MVP. There are supposed to be a lot of really interesting things announced at this one, so it should be an exciting time. I know I will be at the Party with Palermo on October 26, and there will probably be a Florida (and Friends of Florida) MVP geek lager one night as well. Not sure what else is going on, but if you’re going look me up.         Technorati...

MS project macro for Duration Format change
I was working a project schedule with MS project. I started by estimate the duration in 'months' using PERT, and later I decided to switch to 'days'. The I run into the duration format convertion trouble. I fund the set the 'Duration is entered in' drop down list in option menu didn't really do the job. See the full solution: geekswithblogs.net/chrishan/archive/2008/07/18/123879.aspx...

    NINE Questions with Jason Olson
Sorry folks... only 1 interview this week. I've been busier than Gil Gerard at a one hour buffet. Our guest this week is my very good friend Jason Olson. Jason works for Microsoft now, but I knew him when... although that's a story for another day.  Here are my NINE Questions with Jason Olson. 1. Where are you from? Now, Kirkland, WA (just outside of Seattle). As a child I was from McMinnville, OR (which had the adoring nickname of McHickville). And no, I'm not a hick. 2. Ok so...

    Visual Studio 2008 and TargetFrameworkVersion
A question was asked yesterday in one of the CodeProject discussion forums by someone looking for a way to easily change the Target Framework version of all projects in a solution. If you don’t know, the Target Framework version is what tells the compiler which version of the .NET Framework to compile against (more information is available here) and can be set to one of the following values: .NET Framework 2.0 .NET Framework 3.0 .NET Framework 3.5 This can be easily accomplished by...

    Chris Williams with Hair?!?!
I stumbled across this video and if I didn't know better, I'd swear it was Chris...with hair!  Maybe it's just me, but I think it looks a lot like a moonlighting Mr. Williams. Chris, if you're thinking about quitting your day job and singing - I'd say go for it.  Not because I think you'll make it with pipes like this, but you're obviously passionate about the "Rainbow Road".  Your passion will carry you far!   Technorati Tags: chris williams, rainbow road, terrible singing...

Excellent Article on WCF Channel Development and WCF Framework Extensibility
This is very old news, but it's worth repeating. The highly respected WCF Sensei -- Nicholas Allen -- has an excellent article on the binding stack in WCF, how WCF is extensible, and specifically, where and how you can customize these points.  I've been looking for this kind of treatment of WCF customization for some time.  I really could have used it when I was struggling with building a custom interop solution for a client, but alas.  Regardless, I'm noting it here for posterity and for anyone...

    Mod Woes
I worked last night on trying to implement some simple scripting with the Unreal 3 engine and I just about killed myself.  It never compiled right, it seemed to be looking in a completely odd directory, and there are very few actual scripting tutorials online.  Epic's UDN is nice but lots of it is closed, only accessible for licensee's (rightly so). I'm going to work on my map a bit more tonight.  I built this simple map to demonstrate some level building concepts I learned watching loads of 3DBuzz...

A cool way to "rediscover" your music
The title is a quote from one of my bestest buddies about a very cool game. I've been waiting for her to post on it, but she's not done so yet. It's pretty clever game that lets you select the music for it, and dynamically builds the game based on it. Pretty slick, especially if you've a good graphics card. :-)...

Dark Knight: Oh how well they "get" the Batman (No Spoilers)
***NO SPOILERS!!!!! *** The Dark Knight was simply everything I hoped it would be. The end, just like Batman Begins, brought tears to me eyes. It was just quintessential Batman with everything you'd expect. Christopher Nolan really, really "gets" the Batman. The beginning "catch us up" portion is a little tough to grasp (seems like it to my detail-oriented mind anyway) since it was kind of run through quickly. Once the initial players are setup and set in motion, though, the story moves quickly....

    What's Your Developer Soundtrack?
I find that most programmers have a music that they prefer listening to while coding. Just wondering what the gamut of developer soundtracks there are. While I LOVE listening to Sister Hazel, Foo Fighters, Cold Play, Ben Folds, and Bob Schneider for coding, I find myself drawn to the space station most of the time when coding. What's YOU'RE developer soundtrack...

    A Good Lesson in Marketing
Can anyone tell me who this sign is targeting?   Marketing is just a hobby of mine, but I just don’t get it.  If you are a beauty advisor, shouldn’t you wear makeup?  I’m just saying. Happy Coding...

    The College Beginning
Michigan Tech University is a college located in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, called Houghton. It's here that the minds of thousands of late teenagers start their journey every year to become something better. It's here that I started my journey into the world of education. Before my trip up to Michigan Tech and far after the process of unloading all of my things into a tiny 15x8 foot box, formally called a dorm room, I knew I wanted to be in Michigan Tech's newly formed enterprise,...

    Design and Agile Development
A quick shout out to Chad Sturtz for passing this video my way. Video:  http://www.viddler.com/explore/Agileaustin/videos/2/ Length: 82 minutes Date: 1 July 2008 Location: Austin Texas Presenter: Jeremy D. Miller Blog: http://codebetter.com/blogs/jeremy.miller/default.aspx    One of the things that I really liked about this video is that it shows the biggest value (IMHO) of a good users group is being able to be in the room when high level conversations are happening.    “How...

I got a Nikon camera, I love to take the photographs, momma don't take my Kodachrome away | Nikon D60 DSLR
Ok, so when Paul Simon wrote that song, he probably could not have fathomed that one day he wouldn't have film in his Nikon (much less Kodak's Kodachrome variety), but what a cool world it is without it!  I'm sure he'd now gladly give momma that roll of film! With the purchase of his new camera, Jeff Julian got me interested in photography again.  After he got his Nikon D60, I had to go out and get one.  Given the fact that we've got our new little one in the house, now seemed as good a time as...

    Farnborough Airshow 2008
Today I managed to sneak into the Farnborough Airshow under a trade pass to sample the delights of this bi-annual event without the public crowds of the great unwashed in my continuing search for innovation. After all, the defences, aviation and IT industries are joined at their respective hips as innovations in one are keenly felt in the others. Take for example the Eurofighter Typhoon Cockpit, it is pretty uncomplicated and has far fewer switches and buttons than most jet fighters. Pretty amazing...

MSDN Webcast - Integrating MOSS with WCF
Tomorrow morning I will be presenting an MSDN Webcast titled "Bringing Enterprise Data to Life with SharePoint Server and Windows Communication Foundation."  The focus of this Webcast will be utilizing WCF-based application adapters from within Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS).  However, these concepts are not isolated to WCF-based adapters; they can be applied to any WCF binding.  I will show a great set of demos that explore WCF integration with the Business Data Catalog, custom Web Parts,...
