    The Mobile Me Paradox
I’ve been a .Mac subscriber for almost a year now and have found it pretty handy, mostly for iDisk, and the some Mac settings that sync. With the recent introduction of MobileMe, I’m left a bit perplexed. On launch day I tried to bring up http://mac.com, the old .Mac address and found the maintenance page telling me I needed to hold my horses. That’s fine. I fully empathize with deployment pains. So day two rolls around and I finally get to log into .Mac, now Me.com. This was my nice greeting... Finish...

The fundamental importance of unit tests
The tide has shifted it seems from a mass of people who outright reject the need for unit testing, to those who acknowledge it as important and then do just enough to say, "Yeah, we've got testing."  This is code for, "We have a few tests here and there but we're too busy to write them most of the time"... or more likely, "I write a test every now and again, but secretly I think they're an unconscionable waste of time -- I just feel ashamed to admit as much publicly."  Whilst I might feel that these...

Platform Builder: IXP46x, 128 MB RAM, CEBaseCESysgen.bat - System Fails to Boot
It has been another one of those days. Several months ago we discovered that one of our systems wouldn’t boot if we did a clean build, but if we built the kernel separately and then ran makeimg the system would boot. What a mystery, that just didn’t make any sense.  So, the engineer on the project modified PreMakeimg.bat to rebuild the kernel when we run makeimg.   All was good, but this increases build time. If you have followed this blog, you know that I don’t like long build times but we all...

    SPListItemVersion.Created
Here is an annoying inconsistency within the SharePoint Object Model. In list items, you can easily retrieve the Created Date and Modified Date through the OM. It's also pretty easy to get the created date and time for different versions of a list item. What threw me off was that the Created Date and Modified Date of the current item are stored in the time zone set in the SharePoint Administration Web Site (ex: GMT -7) however; the date and times for previous versions are stored in GMT. I was stuck...

    Silverlight Control Builder Contest '08
There's 20 days left until the August 11th deadline for entries in the Silverlight Control Builder Contest! Don't get caught short on the deadline... there are some amazing prizes... the printed list is too long to fit on my browser page here at work... and that's just 1st prize! To see all the prizes including graphics, I have to hit scroll down 7 times... yikes... I'm anxiously awaiting the entries so I can see what everyone's working on. If you haven't been there lately, Page has added...

Database gotchas when upgrading SPS 2003 to MOSS
Again, maybe old news but I thought I would post something interesting that happened during a recent upgrade from SPS 2003 to MOSS.  SharePoint is very finicky when it comes to database transactions and sizing during the gradual upgrade process.  Here are a couple of things to note: 1.  Make sure you have enough size - When upgrading a site that had about 150GB in content, we needed about 500GB in space to complete the migration. 2.  Make sure you know where your _Pair DB's Are - SharePoint for...

SharePoint gradual upgrade disabled when using a SQL instance named SharePoint
This may be old news, but we just hit this issue the other day.  If you try to upgrade an instance of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or WSS 2.0 that is running on a named instance of SQL Server called "SharePoint", the gradual upgrade option is greyed out.  It turns out that this is because the installer thinks that you are trying to upgrade an instance of MSDE.  Changing the instance name to something other than "SharePoint" does the trick.  Talk about hardcoding something...

    Recursive Orchestration
This post describes how to implement a recursive BizTalk orchestration using correlation sets. The need for recursive orchestrations came up during one of my previous projects, where a message needed to be resubmitted with a changed status code, so that a new instance of the same orchestration type could pick it up for processing. Next to that, it's a fun excersize! You can't recurse orchestrations using the Call Orchestration or Start Orchestration shapes, because the Orchestration designer just...

    Nokia N95 8GB and TomTom Rider 2nd generation : sequel #1
Following the debranding of the Nokia N95 8GB, updating the phone's firmware, and reconnecting it to the TomTom Rider, I managed to set up the connection. In June, I performed a real life test. With the TomTom, the phone, and the motorcycle, I went for a trip abroad. Just before I left, I checked the data packet plan for my subscription (Vodafone Live, The Netherlands). At home, it is a flat fee subscription with a fair use policy. Abroad, the packet data connection is causing additional cost. Drivers...

    Alive again
It has been a long time. I really didn't feel the need to blog back then. But now I have a few things I'd like to share, and some peers recommended me to blog, so here I am. First, let me tell you that the experiment with Asterisk and the Linksys router didn't end up well. I mean, it worked and it worked ok. The problem was that the router couldn't cope with the processing required for Asterisk to work. When Asterisk was active, my poor little router restarted every 15 minutes or so. I always...

Here it is: the answer to all SOA and ESB questions....
[[ OK, I am writing this with tongue-in-cheek, which for anyone not familiar with that term, means "not really serious"!!! ]]   Funny thing happened today on the ESB project that I'm on.... After a day of hard work, solving some really tough technical challenges (the kind that makes your head throb, your eyes glaze over and make you think that becoming a carpenter could be a smart career move), I leaned back in my chair and surveyed the landscape (my desk). A piece of tattered paper caught my...

    Ride your music
Like a lot of geeks out there, I have my music collection nearly 100% digitized.  The ritual for the purchase of a new CD is to unrap it and immediately rip the CD into my MP3 USB hotswappable HD and then put it on my Creative Zen MP3 player. (grumbles that my Xbox360 won't address my USB hotswappable HD...) I go through phases where I listen to a "set" of stuff for a while and then periodically blank out my player and start over with a new set.  This is because I can't fit all of my music onto...

New Stuff on the Work Front
From the work front: What have I been doing at work lately?  I’ve been spending a lot of time at work playing with SharePoint, the PowerShellToys’ PowerShellASP which lets you create ASP.NET apps with PowerShell script, and I set myself up with a brand new openSUSE 11 (this is a great distro) machine where I’ve been spending a lot of time in MonoDevelop. Speaking of PowerShell and ASP.NET – check out PoshBoard [at CodePlex], Antoine Habert’s PowerShell driven ajax portal.  Antoine has a nice little...

    Complexity and Usability
Generally I'm not one to write a post that does nothing but highlight someone else's blog post...BUT...this one was important enough (IMHO) that I decided to break my own rule.  Are you building a Leatherman or a Samurai sword?  (stupid linker isnt working) http://petewarden.typepad.com/searchbrowser/2008/07/are-you-buildin.html  As programmers we always want to write new functionality...neat, new, COOL functionality.  That's just what we do, and we love it.  But its hard to keep in...

    DM-ToxicRiver
I wanted to take a break from CR last night so I started work on ToxicRiver.  It's cool, I've only been working with the Unreal editor for less than a week and I can already see improvements on how much faster I can make maps and how much better they look (compared to CR and to the old Atlantis I was working on in 2k4).  ToxicRiver is my first map featuring liquid in the form of a pool -> waterfall -> river.  A few design changes were made, the ramps were too big so I needed to implement elevators...

Generate C# class from XSD file.
I have an existing C# file, generated a long time ago from XSD definition. The XSD files were changed, and proxy class should be regenerated. I've tried to use XML Schema Definition Tool (Xsd.exe) to generate C# class, but it  returned the error: "The datatype is missing". I've actually have two XSD files -outer and imported Thanks to the post: XSD.exe is kicking my butt, man...redux , it pointed me to specify all necessary files on the commandline. Note that name of generated file is combined...
