Well, someone jumped on the You Tube bandwagon and created a Christian variety, with the same look and feel of You Tube. It is called
God Tube!
Actually this is a great idea and, from a marketing standpoint, I wish I would have come up with it. It seems like there is always a Christian variant of something in pop culture. This should have been an obvious business opportunity.
Overall, it is also great to see Christianity in the marketplace of ideas.
Unfortunately, it also shows Christianity at its worst. At least one third of the videos are about Young Earth Creationism or political topics. The most disturbing trend is the absolute intolerance of reviewers. Some of the best produced, theologically accurate, and heartfelt videos on the site are actually Catholic videos created by priests. One of my favorites is A Cat and his Priest Explain God and Suffering.
God Tube also allows comments to be posted on submitted videos. Any videos that venture out of the Fundamentalist mainstream have nasty postings attached haranguing them and questioning the poster's faith.
This is sad. Paul didn't go into Athens and throw a fit about their gods. He found a nice twist in the Tomb of the Unknown God on Mars Hill. Paul even quoted one of the Greek philosophers in Acts 17:28 (yes, Paul quoted Greek philosophers in the Bible!). "In Him we live and move and move and have our being" is a quote from the Cretan poet Epimenides and "for we are his offspring" is from the Cilician poet Aratus, according to the Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary.
Part of the marketplace of ideas is being able to participate in discourse. It is difficult to discuss ideas when everyone is insecurely going ballistic about their particular flavor of the idea.
