Understanding Online communities ...

I remember Sudhakar giving me the link to this original article as we were sitting and chatting about what more we could be doing for MUGH. But he has also blogged about how relevant these are wrt our user group. I agree with each and every point of it and would also like to add few of my own variables.

- Direction
Is the community headed in the right direction or not?
Does the community have the right direction so that the common interests of its members and every individual is being acknowledged.

- Motivation
What motivates people to join and participate and continue in a community?
For the effort of the community as people have diverse needs at various times of their life its required that to hold together the community should organize or should have any activity which motivates and rejenuvates members of the community with what news and whats attractive and whats interesting so as to have them stick around for a while and also to retain the community in the midway growth position.

- Involvement
Does a community have involvement Yes/No if yes how much; have you evaluated that?
A community is not a community till members feel that they are just another face in the crowd or even worse be put in a position to think that they are mere individuals. They should be appropriate needs to involve one and all and also to make sure that appreciation is done to one and all who are participants and retain their interests in the community.

- Continuous feedback.
Does the community know how to retain interests by talking with the members of the community at adhoc?
The above 3 factors go pretty much hand in hand with the fact that the members and the community as such should be able to gather continuous feedback so as to know its own course of action.

Now before any one would ask are we doing this for MUGH. Yes we are in the process of doing this :) isnt it Sudha?
