Ever tried Ruby on Rails?
I'm taking this step. This technology has been on my radar for quite a while. Now I'm taking the plunge. I've bought this book that looks really promising on the subject. RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails. I'm halfway chapter 6 right now, and I'M LOVING IT. I have decided to make the most out of this experience, so I'm going to build this application along with the book. I've set up my little SVN on Google where I will keep my evolution up to date. Chapter 1: Introduction. ......

Thoughts on JP's readability
This post is a comment on JP's post on redability. JP asks what the community thinks about the readability of this piece of code: Run.the<wire_up_global_e... .then<initialize_the_con... .then<initialize_the_use... .then<initialize_the_ui_... .then<initialize_the_mai... .execute(); My first feelings: only JP writes like this ;-) After reading it with full attention, I realize it clearly ......

My first Scrum/XP project in .net is almost over
Since November 2007, I'm a coach in a .net project. This project is managed using the SCRUM principles. I was largely based in the InfoQ online minibook 'Scrum and XP from the trenches': Prioritized product backlog, sprint planning, sprint backlog, daily scrums, sprint demos and retrospectives at the end of every sprint, ... This was combined with XP: Pair programming, TDD, incremental design, CI, collective code ownership (well ... almost), ... This project was a really fun project. Off the top ......

Learning to type
I never learned to type properly. To me, a keyboard always was a straightforward tool I used everyday, without questioning my proficiency at it. I'm starting to realize that my typing technique is far below par. I started looking around me recently. I noticed some developers in the team who were able to watch the screen while typing. Some of them were amazingly fast typers. This made me realize something very basic: I can't type. I always look at my keyboard while typing. Then I look up to check what ......

Nothin but .net, here I come!
I have enlisted to JP Boodhoo's Nothin but .net class in Düsseldorf, Germany from September 22nd to the 26th. To quote JP: "This is a very intense week. Your mind will not have very much in the way of downtime. Days in past courses have gone anywhere from 10 – 20 hours in length!!" He prepared a download of several items to prepare for the course. There's a 30+ minute video where he explains step by step what you should prepare on your PC before starting the class. This includes where to download ......

I'm ALT.NET
Since I mentioned this in my previous post, I might as well elaborate. I discovered there was an open source community for Microsoft technology back in 2004. Curious as I am, I tried several things that looked interesting. I introduced CruiseControl.net, NAnt and NUnit to my customer. What surprised me is that not everyone shares my curiosity. A lot of people have this predefined fear of using non-Microsoft products for Microsoft technology. Most of the developers I talked about it even moaned 'Now ......

A new beginning
Hello, I'm Michel, and I'm a .net developer. (Hi Michel!) Last month, a bunch of .net professionals came together to form a new ALT.NET group in Belgium. I was one of them. Our first meeting was very constructive. One of the things we talked about was blogging. Most of them were active bloggers. Some do it to share their knowledge. Others do it as a permanent notepad they have handy wherever they go. Last week I met Ayende Rahien. He sees logging as some sort of catalyst. He writes to clearly communicate ......
