The UK government has an excellent on-line process for allowing its citizens to upload their tax returns except on one day of the year- 31st January. The rules around self-assessment mean that the citizen must have provided a tax return for the previous tax year by the 31st January. As the year ends on the previous April you would think that would provide enough time... There is a £100 fine for not hitting the date and this seems to be the issue. As with each year before the rush to get tax returns ......

The answer is a lot simpler than you think...the product has been named after David Silverlight, creator of many community websites like Community Credit.

Microsoft have a new policy of rewarding very active community leaders by naming products after them.

So WPF/E became Silverlight.

I've been involved/interested in RFID for over 3 years now and even with BizTalk 2006 R2 + RFID server I am still looking forthe really innovative solution, the jaw dropper, the one you want to tell everyone about.

At the moment I find most customers are still stuck in the 'tag and reader' world without cottoning on to the bigger picture.

If anyone out there knows differently please let me know....

It's fun working for an IT consultancy at the cutting edge of technology. I can spend my time with lots of 'new' toys. The problem comes when working with customers that for very good reason or running a long way behind the edge! I have just recently completed a spell in such an environment at in some ways it has been a reality check of how most of the 'world' operates. Simple stuff such as 'must work with the following ancient browsers' , no downloads to client (there goes Silverlight!) and such ......

I've been considering power usage of all my electrical gizmos...... In my house I have: 2 routers (one per broadband connection) 3 switches 1 x Server 1 x NAS 1 x Slingbox 1 x iMac 3 x Laptops Now in the main only the routers, switches and NAS are on all the time. But I've got to thinking I should kill them overnight. Now I have one router - a BT Home Hub that feeds my BT vision box and needs to be left on for overnight updates. The rest can 'be off'!!! What I need is a way to just switch them all ......

The new wave of web applications are built on technologies such as AJAX and Microsoft Silverlight that enable developers to build better, richer user experiences. These technologies bring a shift in how applications are organized, including a stronger separation of presentation from data. ADO.NET Data Services (also known as Project code name “Astoria”) consists of a combination of patterns and libraries that enables any data store to be exposed as a flexible data service, naturally integrating with ......

Various settings and customizations (e.g. Master Pages, Content Types) can be pushed to an entire SharePoint Site Collection pretty easy. Ronalus writes: One of the most frequently used utilities in SharePoint (2007 as well as 2003) is STSADM. Although highly improved in 2007, it maintains backward compatible with 2003 syntax. As STSADM is a command line utility, and the command-line is somewhat limited compared to Windows GUI, especially when it comes to non-English usage, there is a room for GUIs like stsadmWin (STSADM for Windows). A great two part article that explores the features of Visual Studio that supports Workflow in SharePoint.

Part 1

Part II

With the news of OSLO some months ago the Microsoft World has been all a buzz about Modelling. But this is a number of years away. What interests me is what do we do today? To model business processes today we need to be able to span not only BizTalk but also Workflow Foundation as well. At present there is no product that successfully does this, certainly not a Microsoft one! We can look to K2 for some relief but whilst it makes a go it the problem and delivers an excellent workflow tool we still ......

At CES in Las Vegas last week, UK incumbent telco, BT, and Microsoft announced a partnership that, starting in mid-2008, will allow BT broadband customers who also own Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming consoles to access BT's Microsoft Mediaroom-powered IPTV service, BT Vision, through the Xbox 360. Existing BT Vision customers, who currently access the service through a proprietary hybrid (DTT/IP) set-top box, will now have the option of also accessing it (minus Freeview DTT channels) through the Microsoft ......

Although the new open format Microsoft have introduced for Office 2007 will soon be the defacto standard in the interim most businesses need to exchange documents in the good old Office 97/2003 format. To do this do the following: Open a document Click the Office button In Options choose save then 'save files in the format' Select 97/2003 format Click OK ......

Microsoft's resource site has a great wealth of info on SharePoint 2007 product set: have a look here

What ever the latest software development methodology we investigate or decide is the new defacto approach when the big project kicks in and the chips are down because of the two mistresses of cost and time we always revert to the pyramid approach:

A basic architectural design used many times before, a million 'bricks' pilled on top of each other with no thought for structure and most importantly the use of as many 'slaves' as we can fit around it to succeed by brute force!

Microsoft announces in LA that BT will be releasing BT Vision on to the XBOX 360!

With the less than estatic response to Vista it struck me that what is needed is a common sense approach to this... Vista in many ways is 'where its at' as a developer there are a lot of features that are already there for you to use - .Net 3 for instance but it feels that unless you have a very good machine of vintage two seconds ago it runs like a dog!! This means to a great extent your productivity takes a bashing! The other issue with Vista with less than cutting edge kit is the problem of drivers ......

Just an interesting bit of information: SQL Notification Services is not being carried forward into SQL Server 2008.  This means that BTS06 R2 may never run on SQL08 even with a service pack because BAM Alerts uses SQL Notification Services.

In a shock annoucement Warner Brothers have annouced that they are dumping HD DVD in favour of Bluray. This effectively means the party is over of Toshiba and Microsoft. This is a big blow for both but for Microsoft at least they can offer a Blu ray external addon! Also in a low annoucement it looks as though the Lord of the Rings trilogy will now only appear on Blu ray. Newline the studio responsible for LoTR is owned by Time Warner which in turn is owned by Warner Bros. Remember you read this news ......

According to a report from CRN, Microsoft plans to allow users of the Web Server SKU in Windows Server 2008 to 'run any type of database software with no limit on the number of users, provided they deploy it as an Internet-facing front-end server.' The previous limit was 50 users. Microsoft's partners expect the changes to go a long way toward making Windows Web Server 2008 more competitive with the LAMP stack, against which Microsoft has been making headway in recent months.
