Silverlight Cream for September 08, 2010 -- #943

In this Issue: Tony Champion, Tim H, Roger Gullhaug, Jeremy Likness, Brad Tutterow, Derik Whittaker, Paul Patterson, Sam Judson, SilverLaw, Dave Edson, Silverlight Team, and Sergey Barskiy.
I'm test-driving something new today... I'm listing 'my' pick(s) from the list of things I'm discussing in each of the various categories I've posted on... which will change daily. Today I'm highlighting a Silverlight post, a WP7 post, and a training one. I'm listing these as "Above the Fold" because they will be near the top of the post with a quick link down. There is no external input on these, it's just what caught my eye today. I'm not sure if I'll continue, let's just go day by day and see.

Above the Fold:

Silverlight: "Autofocus Nested Textboxes with Rx in Silverlight" Jeremy Likness
WP7:           "Using the Accelerometer on Windows Phone 7" Dave Edson
Training:     "Effects (Silverlight QuickStart)" Silverlight Team

Shoutouts:

John Papa clued me into this all-Silverlight games site from China - SilverFuture

Erik Mork and Co. have their latest up: Show 105: Shawn Wildermuth’s Upcoming Windows Phone 7 Book

If you're not familiar with Xceed, now's the time: Xceed Releases Only Silverlight Datagrid with Fast Remote Data Retrieval ... there's some pretty cool features in that grid!

If you're anywhere near Phoenix next week (15th), check out the Entity Framework 4 training, PHX 9/15 (Must Register)

From SilverlightCream.com:

Images with Rounded Corners and Drop Shadows in Silverlight
Tony Champion is demonstrating how to put rounded corners and dropshadows on rectangles in Silverlight 4... really easy...
Silverlight Memory Leak DataGrid, DataForm, DataTemplate, etc...
Tim H works his way through to find a DataTemplate memory leak in Silverlight 4 ... how he found it, a workaround, and a tool he wrote to find others... including one in a 3rd Party control.
AutoCompleteBox in Windows Phone 7
Roger Gullhaug has a great example of when the word prediction in WP7 just doesn't really help... the AutoCompleteBox from SL3 Toolkit comes to the rescue.
Autofocus Nested Textboxes with Rx in Silverlight
If it weren't for guys like Jeremy Likness, I'd keep forgetting I need to dig into Rx ... but he keeps posting such cool articles using it like this one of autofocusing and selecting the TextBox to be ready to type no matter where it lives...
Using Isolated Storage on Windows Phone 7
Brad Tutterow has a great intro up about Isolated Storage and WP7... reading, writing, best practices, and external links.
Ninject.Extensions.Conventions ported to work w/ WP7
Derik Whittaker has been using Ninject for 'a few months' on WP7... if anyone should be able to discuss it, then he's the one! He has ported the conventions library and is in a sharing mood :)
Microsoft Lightswitch - Quick Start
Paul Patterson has a boatload of Lightswitch articles on his site, and to avoid them being confusing to 'my' readers, I'm going back to Paul's beginning, and I'm going to work my way out so the posts make sense as you play along ... you're playing along, aren't you??
Flickr Uploader for Windows Phone 7
Sam Judson's first WP7 outing is a Flickr photo uploader ... you know you're gonna want to do that... so check it out... source included!
Flexible MouseMove Surface
This flexible surface by SilverLaw is cool to play with although I'm trying real hard to think of a use for it in an LOB app... check out the demo and then to to the Expression Gallery to pick it up.
Using the Accelerometer on Windows Phone 7
This post by Dave Edson is like Houdini or something. I tagged it yesterday... it's a great post, and today when I went to write it up, it was gone, and just now, poof!, it's back. I've captured it in OneNote just in case! -- go get your own copy, you won't be sorry.
Effects (Silverlight QuickStart)
Silverlight Team has a new QuickStart up on Silverlight Effects. If ya wanna learn how to use blur effects, shadow effects, reflection and mirror effects, and get an intro to Pixel Shaders, this is your link!
Using WinDbg to Find Memory Leaks in Silverlight Applications
Wow here's a blast from the past for me ... I used to pretty much live in WinDbg back in my win32 days ... but Sergey Barskiy shows how he used it to find a memory leak in a Silverlight 4 app.

Stay in the 'Light!

I'm now using Feedburner

I've made a couple changes today to the SilverlightCream site and to my blog, after a discussion last night with a cohort.

I'm displaying (hopefully obviously) an RSS image that now goes out to Feedburner. The big take-away for me for that is that the feed is now displayed as a 'feed' and not as XML. The take-away for you is that you can now subscribe via Feedburner.

I also modified the Search Results page at SilverlightCream.com to tell you how many results were returned. And, did you know you can do partial name, title, url, or synopsis searches?

For instance, I just typed "gaudioso" in the Author Name box and pressed enter. The results tell me there are currently 46 entries in the database for Victor.

As with any change who knows, there may be problems, so if you find something weird, let me know.
