Silverlight Cream for July 13, 2010 -- #902

In this Issue: Michael Washington, Andrea Boschin, Alex Golesh(-2-, -3-), Jaime Rodriguez, Brandon Watson, Jesse Liberty(-2-), and Scott Guthrie.

Shoutouts:

Walt Ritscher announced a new Shazzam is shipping today, but haven't seen a notice yet. As a teas, here's a post from Walt: Oh, shiny! Animated Mandelbrot shader effect

If you plan on any wp7dev work, check out this training: Windows Phone 7 Jump Start: Session One - Getting Started with Microsoft Windows Phone 7 and Silverlight ... this is a link to 1 of 4 that are 3 hours each on the 20th and 22nd of July... see you there!

Jesse Liberty announced a new video in his "Getting Started with Silverlight" series: New Video: Introduction to Xaml

Alex Golesh is not only the first person I'd seen post this: Windows Phone 7 Tools Beta Available for Download, but he's the first person I know that was programming for wp7dev... way back at the MVPSummit 2010 when Michael Washington and I were downloading a Silverlight beta refresh, Alex was telling us what to uninstall to make it easier, and "hey --- you've got the phone template on your machine!" -- so his blog is one to watch! -- see links below.

I misunderstood Ofir Shemesh's post at first because he's blogged about Grid Splitter with Collapse buttons before ... but in this one he's saying this is the BEST code... if you're the author let me know: GridSplitter with a collapse button – BEST

If you don't know who Andy Schleck is, you're not watching the tour... but if you do, you know why I'm not consistent with SC right now :)

From SilverlightCream.com:

RiaTasks: Central Silverlight Business Rules Validation
Michael Washington continues to dig into ViewModel and this outing is discussing Fluent Validation for the business rules in a Silverlight app
Understanding control customization with templates: part #1
Don't let all the wp7dev stuffola keep you from checking out Andrea Boschin's post on control customization with templates at SilverlightShow. This is only part 1, so keep checking back for more good stuff.
Silverlight for Windows Phone 7: Push Notifications (Part 1 of 2)
Alex Golesh is quick at discussing the enhancements in the wp7dev beta -- because he's been playing with the new bits -- ya think ? :) ... he's got a 2-parter up on push notifications that looks like it may be the definitive push notification tutorial ... this is part 1
Silverlight for Windows Phone 7: Push Notifications (Part 2 of 2)
This is part 2 of Alex Golesh's push notifications in wp7dev sequence... great stuff, a definite must-read for anyone doing WP& development.
Silverlight for Windows Phone 7: Launchers and Choosers
Alex Golesh is also discussing Launchers and Choosers in wp7dev ... don't know what that's about? ... check out the informative post.
Migrating apps from Windows Phone April CTP Refresh to the beta build
Jaime Rodriguez has a long list of migration tips for moving between the April CTP and the wp7dev beta... if you've just been playing around, you still want to scan this, but it's darned important if you've got a bunch of code out there.
Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta Released
Brandon Watson has a post up about the wp7 beta release and just about every question answered that I can think of... good resources, links, and even an email address that's getting stuffed with devs wanting phones!
Visual State Manager A-Z
Jesse Liberty's taking a long look at the Visual State Manager, and this is the first in the series -- unless you know it all already, you don't want to miss this!
Styles (followup)
Jesse Liberty posted an addendum post to the one above on VSM containing information on styles and the code -- see, sometimes it pays to blog late :)
Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools Beta Released
Scott Guthrie always has the definitive post on any release, and the WP7 beta is no different... great info and links... I tried to include all his links as well so they'll be searchable at SilverlightCream.

Stay in the 'Light!
