Open Letter to (and deal for) Silverlight Bloggers

While doing that 900th Silverlight Cream post last night, I found some dead links in the database.

With close to 6,000 links, there is absolutely no way I can test them all and make sure they are (still) correct.

Two of the cases I know are because of blog reorganizations where the bloggers did not preserve the previous links. I know it’s not easy to do that. Early on I made some changes at WynApse.com, but I kept both sets alive in my URL-Rewriting file. Since I was already rewriting my URLs, it wasn’t that big a deal.

I’m not going to tell you why (right now), but in a few weeks you are going to *want* those links to work!

So my suggestion is to go to SilverlightCream.com, take the Search link, enter your name in the author block, press enter, and make sure all your links are good.

Now for the deal part of the message – if you’ve reorganized, chances are you don’t even know what those links used to be. So…

If you have broken links at SC, send me the titles and the new links and I’ll hook them back up. This is a little labor-intensive, and there’s only one of me, plus it’s Tour de France season, so it’s not going to happen immediately, but I will do it.

Thanks everyone and Stay in the ‘Light!

Hi,
Maintaining links is really very essential ...
Could you tell me how to do automatic URL Re-Writing for my blog ...
I use Wordpress on a shared hosting account ...

Dave,
You can check these urls by just iterating over the list and making a WebClient DownloadString call on each. Look at the HTTP response code and the content length of each, and you'll know which are good. Just an idea!

Thanks Peter...

I might do that as a last resort just to clean the drek out of the database for blogs that have gone under, but I'd rather the major bloggers check their own info and get back to me. Otherwise, I'd have to then send them email to say they had a broken link anyway.

Good idea though for cleanup, and maybe just run it now and again ... could probably have it automatically send the email too.

In a couple weeks, everyone is going to want to have good links in the SC database (hint, hint) :)

-Dave
