Silverlight 2 Beta 2 is Released!

This is almost an afterthought since people have been blogging it for the last hour. My take is that it's not over until Scott Gu posts :) ... well, that time has arrived, and Silverlight 2 Beta 2 has arrived as well, along with VS2008 and Expression Blend support is available from the link above. Scott Guthrie has a blog post about it, and Shawn Wildermuth has 3 really nice posts up (so far)... he's been patiently waiting for about 3 days :) I'm sure there are many others waiting anxiously to push the send button on B2 code, so this weekend should be a wealth of resources to us all!

I'd like to point out some of the fine print, in case you don't read it in your hurry to install and run

B2 has a Go-Live license, and "Go Live licensees are reminded that as part of the license amendment you signed, there is a commitment to upgrade or unpublish a Beta 1 site within seven days of the public Beta 2 release."

B2 will have a Click-through Go-Live license that will allow you to place SL2B2 code on your production site.

We've already seen a lot of this demo'd and talked about, but there's more complex controls shipped with B2 such as DatePicker and TabPanel. Also, the core controls are part of the core download, so do not have to be additionally deployed, as promised.

Scott's post covers Control Template Editing Support in Blend 2.5 June Preview ... very cool tutorial and very cool suff. He also goes over the Visual State Manager which I've aggregated a few blog posts about already. Consider Scott's tutorial to be "The One", and use the others as supplemental :)

There are additions to the controls we've come to know plus things like Input control in full-screen (finally!) plus improvements/enhancements to Media, Network, and Data.

Lots of fun stuff, and goodness to play with.

Silverlight Cream for June 06, 2008 -- # 292

Some reading while waiting for B2--- John Stockton on Intranet Installations, Jesse Liberty on the Popup Control, and Mike Snow on Browser Resize and Dynamic images.

From SilverlightCream.com:
Silverlight Installation on Intranet Hosted Applications
John sent this to me this morning after I had already left (late) for work... so am not able to give this a dance because it's on BlogSpot. If it delivers as described, it's definitely good info for folks running inside a restrictive environment, and we won't go into who may be in that situation...
Popup Control
Jesse Liberty gives a great write-up on the Popup control and shows 3 approaches to using it. Great idea with the 3 approaches, like answering your questions before you think to ask them :)
Browser Resize – How to capture the size of your browser when it is resized.
Mike Snow has a couple small articles... this first on is on reacting to browser size changes if you have a need to know about it.
Dynamically loading and displaying images in Beta 2
Mike's second article is on the dynamic loading and displaying of images ... good stuff!

Silverlight 2 Beta 2 Downloads??

If I understand NDA's correctly, if I were in a beta program, I couldn't tell you.

So... that being said, I've seen a download link for the SL2B2 chainer on someone's site this morning. My thought on that is user beware, I don't care what site it's located on. Who knows, it might be the release candidate, or it could be a few days old and someone forgot to remove it, and some enterprising person found it.

There's plenty to read in the docs that apparently ARE released, and Tim, Jesse, and others are posting lots of material to keep us all busy and happy until such time that the REAL B2 hits.

In all honesty, I have 6 blogs open that I refresh now and again in this regard: Scott Guthrie, Tim Sneath, Somasegar, Tim Heuer, Jesse Liberty, and Adam Kinney. I'm expecting the announcement to come from one of the them first... but hey, I've been surprised before :)

I'll also point out that Tim Heuer, Jesse, and Adam at least are on Twitter (maybe all are), and Jesse has his SLMicroBlog at Twitter... so if you're not on twitter, or not following them, you might miss the first announcement because Twitter would just be *way* too easy to fire off before launching a blog post.

Until then, THIS is my advice.
