Ok so my editor (VSE) is just a little off the latest, but hey, so am I! ... I just checked and I have version 7, they're now selling version 2007 ... so hard telling how far off I am. I know 2 years ago they no longer supported 7. Oh well... it's like an old pair of boots... it just feels right, and I see no reason to upgrade :)
Back to the reboot thing. Running VS2005 finally at the office, and merging two huge projects. Now and again I try to rebuild and it poots telling me that it can't replace a DLL. I've seen that before, so I shut down and restart VS, but now that isn't enough! Restart is, and that just totally sucks, so I decided to find out who was hanging onto that DLL.
There's so much crap running on this corporate PC that the 2K box I had before is just basically a virus/break-in/websiteyouaren'tallowedon monitor. It throws exceptions and reports them back to 'mom' when I'm debugging my own pages ... it views them as break-in attempts. And of course they won't turn any of the volume down on that stuff, because, as a developer, I may try something nefarious ... but I digress (you're used to that, aren't you??)
So I was REALLY expecting this to be some sort of 'monitoring' software so I could go off on that. I went to Sysinternals where all manner of goodness lives, and downloaded/ran Process Explorer.
It took me a few, and I'd show you a screenshot, but of course I can't run ftp... big silly me ... so under the Find menu is "Find Handle or DLL", and then I typed the DLL name, and I'll be &%$@@ if the process holding onto that sucker wasn't my editor! ... go figure why it was holding the DLL just because I edited a file. I shut down the editor, and everything rebuilt fine.
In defense of VSE, remember I AM running a version from hmm... I think 1997, so that may have something to do with it, and I AM going to keep an open mind and hope at some point it's one of the monitoring files that's keeping me from working so I can complain about that...
Oh well, now there's no excuse for taking breaks and saying "I had to reboot" :)
