Silverlight With Java Script [1.0] Tutorial 10 -- Dragging Objects in a Canvas
Part 1 of a slow dive into Dragging in Silverlight 1.0 "Drag and Drop" in Silverlight is really just "Drag", and it's been covered a lot, even by me :) Since I still see questions, I thought I'd continue the Tutorial series with this exploration. I've left out fun things like what happens when you go off the canvas, and anything to do with Canvas.ZIndex ... that's all in the next one! As always the graphic above is the link to the article. <SilverlightTooltip Number="005" Text="Install Issues"/>
I'm still getting email about getting Silverlight installed on workstations. I don't know if all of the folks that write are ones that had WPF/E on their systems and are having problems similar to mine with my laptop, or if these are genuine new issues. As I say in the Tooltip, the absolute best place to start is in the Forums, but if you've been pounding on this problem yourself and want to take a look at some forum links I've grabbed, these may help. Read my fifth Tooltip to view ......

Some old, some new: -- great idea for archiving cool XAML to use!; The Expression team skinned the rotary control I blogged about a week or so ago; I found a couple good articles by Benjamin Nitschke, particularly one taking a cut at detailing Silverlight Error Codes; and a link for a Carousel from Dan Dobbs at VectorForm. From Here's a good idea... a xaml archive! I'm kind of hoping some of that is in SilverlightCream as well, but if XamlArchive ......

A Couple older links and one absolutely fantastic new one, I'll save it for last :) I found a couple older posts by Jeff Prosise that are still relevant: VS2008 and SL 1.1 and Game of Life in SL 1.1; Some animation code from Mossy Blog; and the one I can't stop playing with: SilverlightVR 360 by Michael Washington and Jeff Paries -- I won't attempt to do it justice... go run the app! Safely using DTS Packages
I've been using DTS to upload 'product' into database tables for for quite a while, and just this weekend I found out that having the DTS package retained on the server is not a grand idea! I thought I'd share that information and explain how to avoid having them on the server and still be able to use them. <SilverlightTooltip Number="004" Text="Visibility-Opacity"/>
The Visibility and Opacity of Silverlight objects each have a specific use. In the past, particularly in the WPF/E days, Opacity was used to hide objects that now should be hidden with Visibility. But there are 'gotchas' both ways. Read my fourth Tooltip to understand the difference. Stay in the 'Light! Michael Cameron continues his Collision articles with another very nice 1.1 article and Gwynn steps into the Silverlight blog arena with two very nice articles on setting up a Silverlight 1.1 Development VPC and not only a Silverlight detection scheme, but a demonstration of conditionally displaying Silverlight if it is onboard. <SilverlightTooltip Number="002" Text="Sender" />
This Tooltip is probably very obvious to the majority of folks reading, but there may be a couple programmers just starting out that will find this useful. If you want to grab an object you can use for your sender.findName() code without passing a valid sender around, or worrying about grabbing one, this will take care of it for you. It also resolves the problem of what object to use for your createFromXaml additions! Check it out here Stay in the 'Light! Silverlight Tagged Web Articles | Silverlight ......

I really like Sara Ford's Visual Studio Blog "Did You Know" ... giving out quick little useful Visual Studio tips. It takes a quantity of time to produce a good-quality Article with all the bits in place. Even Tutorials are getting backed up :( I see a real need for quick answers to things that folks are asking questions about, and every day I see Sara's postings, and it just struck me that those may be the answer on a couple levels. I can post them quicker, so I can fill in around other things, ......

Alex Bowling has begun posting Silverlight at AB Computer Solutions with a PHP Movie Catalog, and a Drag/Drop demo; plus Bridgette posted the very nice beginnings of a new SL game, Gazoolians. Alex Bowling's postings prompted me to add a PHP tag at SilverlightCream, and I've backfilled Michael Washington's posts with that tag as well, so the search will find them all. Michael Palermo IV breaks into the Silverlight Video arena with a video on creating an app to inspect xaml at runtime From Silverlight Made Simple I had originally thought this was Andrew Duthie taking off on Silverlight, but when I read it again, it is a Silverlight blog begun by Frank of which is a good thing because I can't get to ......

Posted On Monday, October 8, 2007 10:00 AM Submittals for Monday October 8, 2007 -- Submittals now repaired
Being a 'seasoned' (a nice word for old) developer, I certainly wouldn't deploy software without fully testing ... um, well, no.. that's it.. no I wouldn't! But then again, the submittal form on is broken ... and although the good part about writing the software yourself is you are intimately familiar with all aspects of the site, the bad part is you can't pick someone and say "it's his fault!" So the upside is I know what I did... I realized it in the drive in to the office. ......

My heartfelt congratulations go out to my friend and WCF Guru, Rick Garibay on his MVP award on October 1st for "Connected Systems". I believe that is officially "Windows Server System - Connected System Developer". I know all the time spent and work Rick has done with CoDe Magazine articles, CodeCamp presentations, and MSDN presentations listed on his blog has gone a long way toward vaulting him into this position. I also know that Rafael will take good care of you! Until I can shake your hand in ......

Microsoft is releasing parts of the .NET framework... no, really!
This is very cool, and when I read Tim Heuer's post, I actually had to read it twice, because I didn't think I read it correctly the first time! It's read-only, and under a Microsoft reference license, but that's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Even better than that, IMHO, is that with VS2008 we'll be able to debug down into the framework the way we have been able to into win32 SDK. I feel like I've spent half my life staring at win32 SDK code in the debugger, so begin able to debug ......
