Before I explain where that quote came from I want to say a couple things:
1) I heard it first-hand
2) My 80 year-old Mother and her 90 year-old boyfriend each have a computer and do email, IM, and web browsing.
So...I was taking a break and talking to the security guard at the main entrance to the building, and an elderly lady showed up at the door complaining that the Credit Union next door was closed. He explained it had been closed for two years, and went on to say people had been making night deposits for about 6 weeks after it closed even with signs clearly stating it was closed. An editorial question from me might be why the night deposit drawer was not sealed, but I digress.
The lady then stated "Oh I don't use an ATM, I go DIRECTLY to a teller and do my business. I don't have anything to do with computers. Computers are what got me out of this place."
She said "I was a long-time secretary, NOT an adminstrative assitant, a SECRETARY. I sat from here to you away from my boss and they EXPECTED me to send him email. EMAIL. I said forget it, and retired."
She turned and walked through the door as a group of employees were coming in and as she did, she stated "Computers are the ruination of our kids".
Everybody just stopped for a few seconds, then she could probably hear us laughing.
Actually, it's a good thing she retired, I can't imagine her getting in-plant instant messaging installed, or dealing with the intranet to find information.
I decided NOT to give her my Mother's email address :)
