Silverlight versions/re-download/problems

This has been coming up a lot on the Silverlight.net forums, and two times already I've seen discussions about this. Once in my inbox and once in a Silverlight group.

The best explanation I've seen so far was from Tim Heuer, and I don't think he'll be upset if I quote him here:

"Let me try to help. If you have 1.1 installed, then it is not auto updating (only the RC is autoupdating). There has been a lot of confusion out there with people thinking “well, I have both.” – you really can only have one installed (quick test at http://timheuer.com/wpfe/versiontest). If you are actively developing, I recommend using the 1.1 Alpha Refresh. Installing that automatically gets you the ability to run 1.0/1.1 applications.

One caveat is that the 1.1 does not autoupdate…so when the new releases come out you’ll have to download/install.

You can get the latest build of the 1.1 alpha refresh here: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/license-win-dev.aspx

Hope this helps,

-th"

I am still battling this issue. I created a small demo last night >> http://rogerguess.net/silverlight/moon01/testpage.html

It seems very few people can run it. Most everyone gets the install button. Even those I have sent the quick test to (http://timheuer.com/wpfe/versiontest) get the install button.

Any ideas? Thanks for the post.

Hi Roger...

It's probably clear from looking at my site that I haven't busted into 1.1 yet, but I will soon, however, that knowledge or lack thereof may shade my response :)

I looked at your xaml and you're loading an assembly dll .. so that tells me that you're running 1.1 I guess...

Your html shows version 1.0

So is it possible that there's a confusion factor going on?

I could run it just fine... but I have 1.1 onboard

I had both installed, but pages I went were always telling me to download the plugin (both 1.1 and 1.0 based pages) But going to a download page redirects me to an error page like:

http://www.microsoft.com/library/errorpages/smarterror.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/silverlight/license-win-dev.aspx

I deinstalled Silverlight.

Still I cannot get to the silverlight pages on microsoft.

I got someone to download the 1.0 install and installed it.

I can now see pages that use the 1.0 plugin. But I still cannot get to the silverlight pages on microsoft.

Ben...

I'll post a link to the forum thread about all this that has all the Registry settings and everything.

I could NOT get the Beta installed on my laptop at MIX and was definitely upset... but after following some of the instructions after the fact I was able to get it working just fine.

I'll put it up as a tooltip, so keep an eye out.
