Why Does Crystal Reports ALWAYS kick my Axx - Part V
It's been a while since I posted my last Crystal Reports rant and I've been walking around this sucker on egg shells because I've made multiple xsd changes and gotten them into the reports without having it puke and die on me like it normally does... so that's a good thing. The bad thing is that all of a sudden I'm getting a very weird "Page header or footer longer than a page" message. So I go to Google and I find others that have had the same problems and have resolved it by making sure the print ......

Help And Manual was a big help this weekend
I'm not running Vista yet ... yeah I know... I've got it, I just haven't had the grand desire to go through the pain and suffering of repaving my system yet. I keep hoping the 'computer fairy' will drop off a new PC at the house and I can install it and all the other crappola I have installed on the new one while the current one is still running for all those things I forget :) So when I started teaching a class for UOP named "Programming Concepts" last week, I had a couple people have trouble right ......

Trouble Learning Silverlight? -- maybe your scope is too large
It seems every day on the Silverlight.net forum somebody is having trouble getting "Hello World" to run in Silverlight. On the surface, that wouldn't seem unusual, because it's something new. But then I look at the post and have to ask myself what is really going on. Why is it that everyone feels they must without a doubt have to learn Silverlight from the standpoint of the Alpha? It must be the masochistic side of software developers or something. We know there's pain involved in learning, so why ......

SilverlightCream.com Update
I moved the count of entries in the database to the sidebar so you don't have to go searching for it (it's 81 right now). I got email from Andrew Duthie of .NET DEVHAMMER and he suggested I look into Worldmaps. I like it, and since the site is just starting, I figured what the heck, lose the 8500 red dots and give this new one a dance. I like the way you can zoom the big map and see where the heck those folks are located :) I also had a running email conversation with a reader that I'm not sure wants ......

Quote of the Day: "Computers are the ruination of our kids"
Before I explain where that quote came from I want to say a couple things: 1) I heard it first-hand 2) My 80 year-old Mother and her 90 year-old boyfriend each have a computer and do email, IM, and web browsing. So...I was taking a break and talking to the security guard at the main entrance to the building, and an elderly lady showed up at the door complaining that the Credit Union next door was closed. He explained it had been closed for two years, and went on to say people had been making night ......

SilverlightCream.com Update
It's not my intent to post every time I add to SilverlightCream, but at least for the first few days while I'm populating the database with material myself, I'm going to do so. As I promised, I've multi-tagged all the material already in the database. I've also added a couple tags: LINQ and WebService ... both of those are very popular topics with SL 1.1 developers, so I thought it would be good to include in the search. If anyone finds something incorrectly tagged, please let me know because it ......

Silverlight versions/re-download/problems
This has been coming up a lot on the Silverlight.net forums, and two times already I've seen discussions about this. Once in my inbox and once in a Silverlight group. The best explanation I've seen so far was from Tim Heuer, and I don't think he'll be upset if I quote him here: "Let me try to help. If you have 1.1 installed, then it is not auto updating (only the RC is autoupdating). There has been a lot of confusion out there with people thinking “well, I have both.” – you really can only have one ......

SilverlightCream.com Updates & Questions for users
Last night I made a reasonably large change to the submit/search mechanism on SilverlightCream. I kept feeling hampered when I was trying to enter someone's information and could only pick one tag. It just made a lot of sense to have the categories be multi-tagged. That's all taken care of now, and I will walk back through the current entries and multi-tag them probably tonight. Only a handful of entries now are tagged multiple ways. A user sent me a problem report about linking directly to the SearchResults ......

MZ-Tools is A-1!
I'm an admitted tool freak. I've created enough myself that I always appreciate a good one when I find one. I'll willingly spend hours learning how to setup a tool that will save me time in the long run. Just yesterday I became acquainted with MZ-Tools. Of course the version that I really want to run is the 6.0 version for VS2005/2008. But here at 'the office', I find myself doing Microsoft Access at least part of the time and MZ-Tools version 3.0 is free for that, so what the heck... I downloaded ......

Silverlight ColorPicker Utility
When I was playing with some code while working on the gradient tutorials, I had a genius idea to allow the user to select the end color of the radial gradient by clicking a location on the linear gradient. Of course this would mean the linear gradient would have to run through all the colors. I actually had it working to a point, but realized it was *way* too much for a tutorial on gradients, so I hung onto the code and finished what I was doing. Later thinking about that code, the thought struck ......

Personal Milestones
I'm not sure I'll end up pushing "Post" on this, but we'll see. On the anniversary of my birth, I thought I'd think back, at least as far as my memory allows... For the last 2 years I have been doing .NET web database development in C#. I also find myself doing some MS Access and Crystal reports although not so much Access lately... all good stuff, I could do this forever I think! I spend all available 'free' time playing with and writing about Silverlight, and because of that I received the MVP ......
