Page Brooks has been getting lots of email about the contest from tool vendors! Check out the prize list ... very cool -- and trust me, it's not up-to-date :)... and a personal thanks goes out to all the vendors from me!!

I know if I were going to be entering this contest, I'd probably not submit until the last possible moment, but as you can imagine, that is a tad nerve-wracking on those of us involved

I don't know a solution to this unless you that are hard at work want to drop either Page or me a note just to let us know you're up to something. I totally understand the need to keep things close to your vest, but maybe a thread at the SilverlightCream Forum would be fun to see who all is involved, if for nothing more than an "I'm working on something, leave me alone" note!

As I said last time, I'm excited about seeing what the submissions look like.

I've kicked this idea around a bit in email with some devs.

Silverlight Cream needs some updating, but it's going to have to wait until after I get done with both these book chapters... it's MUCH more effort than writing on my site!

Meanwhile, in discussion with Michael Washington of Adefwebserver.com, and the fun new Silverlight Desktop, Michael graciously offered to host a SilverlightCream forum!

Secretly, I think he's trying to get me to start looking at DNN, but don't tell him I said that :)

I've played with this, and sat on it for about a week, so I think it's time to either cut it loose, or turn everyone loose on it that may want to get involved, so I'm going to do the latter:

This might be a good way to discuss the latest SC entries, and get the authors in on extended discussion of their work. Since some of the authors pose problems, this may be a good way to interact and resolve some of that as well.

There's been some good job offers show up on some of the groups, so I'm thinking a thread for that would be useful.

I have a couple things I'll throw over the wall from time to time as well.

All we can do is give it a try and see how it goes, so... create yourself a login, and let's start conversing!

How to Resize a Silverlight 2 App and Keep the Same Aspect Ratio: Pete Brown helps us all out with a discussion of resizing and honoring the aspect ratio of our Silverlight applications ... very useful, and a good write-up as usual :)
Silverlight 2 Beta 2: Doing Data Part III: Peter Bromberg is back with Part III of his Silverlight 2 B2 and Data... this time serializing a Generic List ... good stuff!
Accessing Amazon S3 with Silverlight: If you've been playing with S3, then Tim Heuer's latest blog post will be of particular interest to you as he describes accessing S3 with B2, in more of a tutorial fashion than anything... good descriptions and links.

Christopher Bennage has an interesting WPF article on TemplateBinding that if not directly related to SL, it's close.

A couple days ago I referenced the Silverlight 2 RefCard from DZone, and since then have gotten a copy of the PDF file... this is very nicely done... it has an amazingly large amount of material in a small space. Kudos to the author, Chad Campbell, and to DZone.com for making it available, and thanks to DZone for the PDF file!

DevExpress has released Beta 1 of their AgDataGrid Suite for Silverlight 2. Note this is Beta, but they're offering it up for free, so take a look at their video demos and you'll want to download it just like I did :)

And one more item... the Silverlight Control Builder Contest '08 ... if you haven't looked at the list of prizes lately, go do so... it has been growing almost daily... any of the three winners is going to walk away with an amazing amount of swag... so I hope everyone is hard at work on their entry!

Deep Zooming EVERYTHING!: Alex Knight is, as he says "Deep Zooming EVERYTHING!" ... and I really like the out-of-the-box thinking... I've demoed both of his latest to people just as examples of using Deep Zoom. I also ~~really~~ REALLY like the way Alex has SL pages for all his demos... nice touches of subtle animations... good job!
LayoutTransform functionality updated and enhanced for Silverlight 2 Beta 2!: David Anson brings his LayoutTransform into the B2 world, and provides all the source for doing so, plus pictures and explanation.
Updating Silverlight.js and Firefox 3: Tim Heuer takes a definitive shot at how to update your Silverlight.js detection, and why you should, what it means, and what's the deal with FF3?

Phoenix Silverlight User's Group Meeting

We had our July, 2008 Silverlight User's Group meeting tonight at Interface Technical Training in downtown Phoenix, and considering the heat, we had a decent showing. If I counted correctly, there were 16 there. Some of the attendees were first-time, and it's always good to see new faces.

The Phoenix rock-stars were in attendance: Mike Palermo, Steele Price, Tim Heuer, and Phoenix' newest MVP: Joel Neubeck of Terralever.

Steele gave a great presentation on Top Bananna focusing more on the how than the what this time, demonstrated using Blend to dig under the covers of some of the VSM stuff. Hands-down this is some of the coolness of Silverlight 2, so was good to have someone that knows what they're doing up there talking and answering questions.

Steele raffled off a couple copies of MSDN Premium! -- see? ... don't you wish you'd have been there?

Then we had a bunch of pizza and soft drinks and lots of conversations, and meeting people I didn't know before tonight... Hi Sol :)

Back in the main room for some short discussion and arrangement of who is presenting next month (more in another post later). We finished with a raffle of one copy of VS2008 Pro, provided by Steele and license keys for SnagIt 9 and Camtasia provided through MVP Kathy Jacobs... attending her first Silverlight User's Group meeting.

All-in-all a successful meeting, lots of discussion, networking, learning, swag, and pizza ... what more could you ask for???

Line Rider rides on Silverlight 2: Time Heuer blogged about the Casual Game Line Rider... this was my first exposure, and all I've seen so far is the You Tube video he references, but it looks very cool. The artwork Tim is displaying on his site is awesome!

Thanks to everyone involved in this effort, and all the time they put into vetting all the MVPs.

And thanks to all the folks that read my ramblings because when it's all said and done, the development community is what it's all about. I know some stuff but I'm far from the sharpest crayon in the pack If I can help other people get energized about Silverlight or find the resources they need to learn, then that's what feels good.

Silverlight X-Domain Scenario: Emil Stoychev discusses how they pulled off allowing us to use the Twitter Widget they posted yesterday by running code from SilverlightShow on our sites... good to know info, particularly with a working example.
Dragging an element from one user control to another: Michael Washington takes Drag and Drop to a new level on his Silverlight Desktop allowing Drag and Drop between UserControls -- no really... he has a small video playing on the blog, and it just made me smile to watch it... it 'just works' ... very cool, Michael.. oh, and did I forget to mention he includes the code??
Silverlight "Art and Technology": I found this by way of Chris Carper on The Business of Silverlight site. In Chris' words: " Its focus is on the integration between our rich design/development tools and the Silverlight run time. We have some case studies as well as source code, etc. that designers and developers can utilize." -- at first glance, it's definitely slick... looks like fun, but I haven't had a lot of time to spend there (yet) :)
