Pro Windows Embedded Compact 7
Yesterday I received my copy of “Pro Windows Embedded Compact 7” by Avi Kcholi. http://www.apress.com/97814... It’s a great book for people that have some experience and knowledge Windows Embedded Compact 7 and want to learn the “black magic” behind device driver development on this operating system. The book guides the reader trough different aspects of drivers (and BSP) development, starting from the foundation and reaching some advanced topics that are not covered in the on-line reference. ......

Professional Windows Embedded Compact 7
This new book targets embedded developers that want to use the latest release of the Windows CE/Windows Embedded Compact OS family. It has been written by Samuel Phung (that wrote also the excellent “Professional Windows CE 6.0”), Thierry Joubert and David Jones (that released many very useful tools for Windows Embedded in the past). They are great developers and also very good trainers and writers, and I’m pretty sure that they will provide a great amount of knowledge to people wanting to discover ......

Events, events and more events… (and some trainings too!)
Sorry for not having been active on this blog (and forums) lately, I’ve been very busy with my new activity as a self-employee, but now I reached an agreement with my boss (myself) and I’ll try to post more regular updates here. If you want to discover something about the latest releases of Windows Embedded operating systems you’ll have many chances in the upcoming weeks. Connect with Windows Embedded The “Connect with Windows Embedded” event at MS-Italy headquarters in Milan will provide a good ......

Windows Embedded Compact 7 and Silverlight for Windows Embedded
If you want to see a preview of Windows Embedded Compact 7 you can attend a one-day workshop in Milan on the 7th of February. During the workshop you’ll have a chance to use the new tools and see the OS image running on a ARMv7 device. You can register here for the event (registration may already be overbooked, but if you register you’ll notified of other events in your area): http://www.arroweurope.com/... ......

WES7 in Rome and WEC7 in Bologna
I’m sorry for not having updated this blog for some time… If you want to meet me in person (and maybe to tell me how lazy I am in updating my blog) you will have two chances this month! The first one will allow you to learn something more about Windows Embedded Standard 7 and test it in an hands-on lab. It will happen at Microsoft’s offices in Rome (V.le Avignone 10) on the 23rd. You’ll find more information and the registration page here: http://www.arroweurope.com/... ......

Installing Windows CE 6.0 tools on a Windows7 64bit PC (Updated again)
I recently bought a new PC and I choosed a machine based on the 64bit version of Windows 7. Using a 64bits OS will allow me to use more than 4GB of RAM and this is quite important for me because it will allow me to run multiple virtual machines to test beta products and keep some customers' development environment isolated from the others (for example for customers that need to test and certify each installed QFE and may allow me to install them on my development machine some time after their availability). ......

Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7
Fellow MVP Jochen Dieckfoß has posted a tutorial about Silverlight for Windows Embedded development using the new tools included in the Windows Embedded Compact 7 CTP on his blog “Discover the Windows Embedded Experience”: http://discovertheexperienc... This tutorial is very useful also because it allows you to compare the differences between the current version and the new one and, more specifically, allows you to appreciate how the ......

Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Padua
Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this ......

Silverlight for Windows Embedded Tutorial (step 5 and a bit of Windows Phone 7)
If you haven’t spent the last week in the middle of the Sahara desert or traveling on a sled in the north pole area you should have heard something about the launch of Windows Phone 7 Series (or Windows Phone Series 7, or Windows Series Phone 7 or something like that). Even if you are in the middle of the desert or somewhere around the north pole you may have been reached by the news, since it seems that WP7S (using the full name will kill my available bandwidth!) is generating a lot of buzz in the ......

Silverlight for Windows Embedded tutorial (step 4)
I’m back with my Silverlight for Windows Embedded tutorial. Sorry for the long delay between step 3 and step 4, the MVP summit and some work related issue prevented me from working on the tutorial during the last weeks. In our first, second and third tutorial steps we implemented some very simple applications, just to understand the basic structure of a Silverlight for Windows Embedded application, learn how to handle events and how to operate on images. In this third step our sample application ......

XAML2CPP
Before I start to explain the topic of this post I should confess one of my many defects: I'm very lazy. Someone may have noticed that from the update rate of this blog, but I really like to avoid as much work as I can. I also really like to experiment new technologies and embedded devices, and that's bad for a lazy guy because that means having to write some code... While experimenting with Silverlight for Windows Embedded I found myself trying to write some more complex samples to continue my own ......

Silverlight for Windows Embedded tutorial
Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 has been released yesterday, you can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/do... One of the most exciting new features of R3 is Silverlight for Windows Embedded. With this technology the UI of an application can be described using XAML, an XML-based language, and can be designed using visual tools like Expression Blend. This will allow UI designers to work on embedded devices using ......

Visual Studio application debugger
You just finished that BSP, developed all required drivers and low-level code, configured hive-based registry, defined your device's memory layout... and now it's time to develop your application to leverage all that low-level/OS code and provide great services to your device's end users. You may want to use visual languages like C# or VB.Net to develop it, using the power and ease of usage of the .NET Compact Framework or, you want (or need) to use C and C++ but you want to use advanced libraries ......

Windows Embedded Seminars in Rome
I'll be attending the Windows Embedded seminar in Rome this week (25-26th of February). If you want to learn something new about Windows Embedded technologies and have a chance to test the tools during hands-on labs, this two days seminar is a very good opportunity. If you want to attend the seminar you can still register at this page: http://www.microsoftembedde... As you can see from the agenda I'll talk about Windows CE (showing some cool demos) on the first ......

What's wrong with my build?
Windows CE build is quite a complex process. It involves different tools to parse makefiles, build and link code, merge resouces, make the OS image etc. and if something fails during the build is not always easy to understand what's wrong. The first place where you can check is the build ouput window. Most of the errors can be solved from there: compilation errors, link errors, files missing during makeimg etc. If the output window does not provide the information you need, you should check two files: ......

Did you install Windows CE shared source?
If you don't have a "PRIVATE" subfolder in your Windows CE installation subtree or if it's almost empty, go finding the installation CD and re-launch the installation. If you choose "custom setup" you have a chance to install Windows CE shared source. Do it as soon as possibile. When I talk about Windows CE at conferences here in Italy to people that don't know the OS, many of their mouths opens in disbelief when I say that the OS is realtime (hard-realtime), and show proofs of that. But jaw bones ......
