The opinions expressed within are my own and should not be attributed to any other Individual, Company or the one I work for. I just happen to be a classic techie who is passionate about getting things to work as they should do (and are sometimes advertised and marketed as being able to?) and when I can I drop notes here to help others falling in to the same traps that I have fallen in to. If this has helped then please pass it on - if you feel that I have commented in error or disagree then please feel free to discuss with me either publically or privately? Cheers, Dave
Thin Clients, VDI and Linux integration from the front lines.... Raw and sometimes unedited notes based on my experiences with VMware, Thin Clients, Linux etc. VMware and other Virtualization tools How many ways can VMware be useful? The list is endless?
Stop whatever you are doing - the new display technology is now up with StarTrek and the Minority Report!
Have a look at these "commercially available" displays - this is fantastic - just as the price of Plasmas are tumbling because of the price of LCD's (with more technology enhancements down the track?) we now have real holographic displays - although in 2D? OK, so you don't think this really looks that good? Try the picture below? Or better yet - go and check out their web site. Now lets get back to the chap who was just boasting about how good his Home Cinema was?...... ;-)) Image: Supports full ......

Microsoft, the big absentee of Virtualization?? Is Microsoft really committed to this?
Of all the Blogs and comments regarding Virtualization recently this is the one that I have found to be the most thought provoking. There was a time between 2000 and 2002 where I almost couldn't make my mind up whether to consolidate on VMWare or Connectix, depending on whether I needed USB support or something else at the time.... so have a look at the full article? I think Alessandro is on the money here, the way Microsoft is developing Virtual Server it's almost like they want to be in second ......

Ericom WebConnect 5.5 - a Citrix Alternative?
So, I was thinking today about what's happening in the SBC (Server Based Computing) arena....... I have posted earlier about what Ericom was getting up to, and so it would transpire that they have now released their version 5.5 of their Web Connect product, and as good as it is (I have been playing with the Beta) the client for the end user still defaults to an install location of C:\WebConnect Client 5.5..... etc - instead of C:\Program Files\WebConnect Client 5.5 - now this may be a small complaint ......

WiMax now available in Central London at UrbanWiMax
Thanks to Jason for discovering this.Well it's nice to see it's here already - I did get excited intially by their offer: Try our service for FREE Worth £1353 included in the offer is: Connection charge Installation charge Urban WiMAX Equipment Router 3 month service Especially as UKOnline have recently changed their terms and conditions so that I *could* have opted out? but at £99 a month it's a bit steep for me as it's only home use. For my money I'll stick with UKOnline, at £15/month ......

Scripting automatic startup for virtual machines under Virtual Server
OK, so I still haven't done any upgrades to the beast at home, it's still *only* running VMWare Workstation 5.5, and I haven't had any time to play about with the new Server or the older GSX Server. But it strikes me that this little bit of code might also work under Workstation anyway? It'll certainly make my VMWare's that I rely on a bit more reliable? ;-))Works for me - the poor man's ESX anyone? Thanks to Michel at ThinComputing for spotting this Virtual Server allows you to configure virtual ......

Server Cloning with Presentation Server 4.0 - CTX107406
So courtesy of Doug's site, comes news of an updated Article from Citrix regarding Cloning of Servers Citrix notes.... Server Cloning Server cloning can provide more rapid deployment than a scripted installation. A few steps are required for cloning servers. These steps vary depending on the type of data store used for the farm, and are described in the following sections. Presentation Server is compatible with server cloning, but cloning software can cause the operating system or its add-ons to ......

Connectra SSL-VPN and Citrix Web Interface - how hard can it be?
So I'd visited a client early last week to look at a System at a bank that had been installed by another Integrator. I believe they'd installed it as a PreSales or Proof of Concept, so it was obviously done pretty quickly and they didn't neccessarily hang around to finish it all off..... (more's the pity?) So when I did have a look at it, I could understand the WI side, but I wasn't really conversant with how Connectra was setup. However I was able to clearly show that the reason that it wasn't working ......

Looks like it is possible to get WebSphere Application Developer to work with Citrix
So I had a bit of a challenge today, I needed to get WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD 5.1.2) working correctly in a CPS 4.0 installation - took a little messing about, but here's the raw notes. First tried setting Virtual IP for WSAPPDEV.EXE - this was enabled with 30 IP's available. Checked via Event Log that IP's are being issued to Clients. Tried Setting Compatibility Flags for WSAPPDEV.EXE Decimal Value of 18 (Hex code of 18 and App Fails to start) just in case that might have resolved ......

Is Google the new Microsoft? (Rumour of GDrive - Google supplying Infinite Storage to consumers? this can't be serious?)
Now it's interesting to see that this morning I have seen two articles that are both heading in opposite directions? Over at Doug's site we have Microsoft Launches Killer New Search Engine – Google Beware…WOW! Is all I can say, WOW! Microsoft just released an upgrade and complete makeover to their Search Engine. ( ) This thing is amazing and you must use it to believe how cool and easy search can be. As many of you might know, I'm not a fan of the search engine, or at least ......

More twists and turns in Gizmondo exec's Ferrari crash - and more Pictures
So this just in from Engadget: Remember the former Gizmondo exec, Stefan Eriksson, who crashed his million dollar Ferrari Enzo last week? Well, leave it Eriksson to make even that really shady. According to Malibu sheriffs, not only did a supposedly-intoxicated and bloodied Eriksson flee the scene and reportedly blame the accident on a driver only known as "Dietrich" (despite the only blood being on the driver's side), but a magazine (and we don't think they're talkin' Guns & Ammo) was discovered ......

64 bit Windows and 64 bit Citrix ready to go - but I'm still dealing with 16bit Apps?
I must confess there seems to have been a fair bit of work stacking up in the queue on the Help Desk recently, and there have been some problems that have seemed to defy logic, and then after a while they almost take on the persona of the Ugly Troll guarding the bridge, you just don't want to know about it - because you almost feel defeated just glancing at the heading, or when a request for an update lands in your email? Let me state for the record that I'm not *tied* to the Help Desk, all of the ......

Citrix Releases v4.2.1 Hotfix for Citrix Access Gateway (CAG)
Courtesy of Doug Brown at DABCC.COM there is this news of what is effectively a hotfix for the CAG (Citrix Access Gateway) I can also confirm with Doug that this will simply update the device without blowing away your existing Config, Licences, etc. However, it is always good practice to plan for the unforseen? so it's not a bad idea to save a copy of the config in a safe place before upgrading, don't you think? ;-)) If you are currently running Citrix Access Gateway version 4.2 you can upgrade to ......
