Well it had to happen at some stage didn't it.... There I was having a great time and then it got dropped on me - Citrix have now dropped a brand spanking new Blackberry 8700G on me.
As a longtime user (and dare I say it - evangelist) of the MS Smartphone format in both the C500 and later in the C600 versions I have been quite comfortable with this, it works, it does what I need - in that I thought I had finally found some sort of Device Nirvana where I had one device that was my PDA, Mobile Phone, sometime Navigation System and allowed me to keep track of both personal and business incoming emails in real time.
Now - it almost seems like a huge leap back in time.... First of all I hated the fact the wheel is on the right, dictating the device be held in the right hand (I'm slowly getting over that) then it probably wasn't helped with not necessarily being given the best detailed instructions about how to activate it?
Use this password for the "Enterprise Activation" and you'll be fine........ (famous last words?)
So I have now attempted to carry this out numerous times with no success - but the real kicker, is that with it not working I have a completely blank Address Book - the lack of email I can live with, but an empty address book in a Mobile Phone in this day and age is way more than just frightening, it's diabolical.
Apparently the lack of the activation working correctly has something to do with the fact that the BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server ;-)) LOL) is located in the US - AND - the latency in trying to do the Activation across the wire..... go figure!
Although the device supports 2G and 3G seamlessly, there might be some issues (latency?) with 3G, so the device is locked to 2G for the moment. It would be nice if you could just connect it via the Laptop and then use the IP Stack to make the connection but the documentation is not very clear about that, and I have my reservations about whether this actually uses an IP Stack or something else entirely... again lack of info? or me just not being bothered to spend hours searching through google?
Anyway, I could have suffered through most of this without too much impact - until!!!!
I mentioned to our Support here in Sydney that it hadn't Activated yet and was told "It may take 8 - 10 hours to activate!!"
And if it doesn't work, the only option apparently is to wipe the device and try again.....
I have found that I can setup the Device Manager to replicate via the Desktop so that I can synch the Outlook's Contacts with the Address Book but then I have to wipe the device to restart another attempt at Enterprise Activation <sigh>......
So far - 2/10 - not impressed at all, however, I have strong suspicions that this could be improved out of site if the people implementing it A, communicated with the users better - B, knew what they were doing? or were at least allowed to do it the way it should be done
If anyone has any feedback as to how to get this back on track then feel free to post? But so far my experience of the Blackberry from a Users perspective Sucks
