Merry Xmas

I hope everyone enjoys the Xmas break and has a good time? We're also looking forward to some snow on Tuesday if we're lucky.

Cheers to one and all, and may your god be with you. Here's looking forward to a more peaceful world in the new year?

Get your email and blog updates using SmartPhone
I've long been a fan of using Exchange 2003's OMA to get my Corporate email on my SmartPhone but now Google has formally released their Mobile version of Gmail at m.gmail.com Along with this I have also signed up with Bloglines as they also manage to recognise the small form factor of the SmartPhone so this leaves it nice and simple for me to now keep up to date with my Corporate and Personal email as well as my RSS Feeds when on the go. Give them a try, I don't think you'll regret it ......

Updated "Tools and Resources" section on Citrix's Web Site?
OK, OK, So I'm bored....... I'm sitting in a rather hot Build Room that has little or no ventilation looking after the base builds of a few Servers and getting them SysPrep'd and Ghosted away using Bart's PE and while I'm waiting for that to happen I'm doing some browsing...... OK? Anyway, have a look at this link at Citrix - "Tools and Resources" - as this does seem to have had an update? Now let me point out that I was asked to login before accessing this area, and from the looks of it it was similar ......

Is the g-smart part of the new wave in SmartPhones? Push Email from Microsoft is here!! (Or at least in Asia? ;-)
So it would appear that MS are not letting the predatory Lawsuit from Vista slow them down? As reported over in MSMobiles the new Gigabyte g-smart is the first Mobile 5 device to come ready prepped with the AKU 2 (as the MSFP is going to be known?) Fancy looking device, I must say, but this clearly looks like it's an Asian version and I'd be thinking that there's still some way to go before we see it available in Europe? And Jason is also confirming that it does have Push Email ......

Vodafone Germany launched HTC Wizard as VPA compact II
As reported on MSMobilesNow this looks like a sexy looking little toy - but I wonder is it because the keyboard looks vaugely like the Nokia Communicator? or is that just my imagination? ;-))(And I guess there's been an update on Pricing since this article at MSMobiles was posted, as it's now Euro 149 with a Contract) ......

Citrix Troubleshooting Tips - Don't forget the Basics!
A colleague of mine was looking in to an issue last week where the users appeared to be having very slow logins, as seen in this CTX Article 107433The Logon Process Hangs At "Running logon scripts..." What it turned out to be was that this was a system integrated in to a Novell Environment and somewhere in their login script was some lines that messed with the PATH Statement. Now this should have been set not to mess with the Citrix Servers - but, never mind... - so anyway, the PATH was actually ......

Sony BMG RootKit - Ooops, the ongoing DRM fiasco....
Well, some might say that this highlights a very good reason not to Buy CD's? But that would be somewhat cheeky? ;-) In an interesting aside to this though that I read today in PC Pro is the comment about the people and their PC's that have been effected by this must surely be running Anti-Virus in some flavour or other? And it's more than likely this was the case that 80 - 90% of these people were running a fairly up to date Virus Definition File? And if this was the case - how come the AV Protection ......

ClustrMaps - a very neat way of literally "seeing" where your Web Site Visitors are coming from
With some spare time on Friday just before heading off to the Company Xmas party I took the time to check out Brian Madden's earlier article about A listing of Citrix and Server-Based Computing Blogs and Websites and while looking through these I came across the ThinGuy (Craig Bender) again. (Oh, and thaks for the inclusion Brian! ;-) What I found quite neat was a little map to one side of his blog for ClustrMaps so that you can have a nifty little world map showing where around the world your Net ......

IMPORTANT : Visto sues Microsoft, rumors about reason of delay of the push e-mail confirmed !!!

So this news from MSMobiles

Seems like we might be waiting just a little bit longer than we all thought to be able to get push email going on the SmartPhone/PocketPC's........   major bummer dude, guess I'll have to concentrate some more on the Access Gateway? ;-)

Free Server 2003 TS CAL License Program for Windows XP NOW extended till June 30, 2007 (yes FREE until 2007!!)
Again Brian's got the scoop - this has now been extended until 2007http://www.brianmadden.... Microsoft Extends Windows 2003 TS CAL Transition Plan until June 2007 I had previously reported that you had until December 31, 2005 to obtain your "free" Windows 2003 TS CALs if you bought Windows XP Professional before April 24, 2003. I'm happy to announce that Microsoft has extended this transition program an additional 18 months! If you're confused, read this article Brian ......

Xbox 360 file-system de-coded
Well, that didn't take too long, did it? ;-)) From TheRegister.co.uk Although Dave will be happy to hear that there has been some reports of overheating and BSOD's seeing as he wasn't able to get one for Xmas? No doubt it will all get sorted for the new year? In the meantime one of my colleagues was telling me that if you just wanted something similar that can play DVD's, DiVX, AVI's, XViD's etc. then the unit to look for is the LG DVX 9900H. This will recognize File Systems, Folders, etc and allow ......

Remember to keep the Front Door locked? Security basics in a Citrix Environment
I can't remember why it came up again today, but I was reminded of an article Brian Madden did back at the start of the year (also based on Thomas's earlier comments on what *should* be added to WI) on Security regarding the use of the "robots.txt" in an NFuse / Web Interface installations. Now just a quick review of these google searches:"MetaFrame Presentation Server Login", was 70, now 241"MetaFrame XP Login", was 300, now 335"/MetaFrame/default/login", was ??, now 133 So on the surface of it, ......

Orange C600 is now shipping in UK

I was on the phone to Orange UK this evening on another matter, and just asked again about the C600 only to be told "It is shipping, but we are currently out of Stock (!!??!!) best place to check is one of our Stores?"

Amazing, looks like it'll be another case of the Left hand not knowing what the Right is doing?

Gartner advises halting BlackBerry rollouts??
More info from ZDNet Looks like it might be more of a "storm in a teacup", but it's still not good press for Blackberry? Especially as they still seem to be smarting from some poor financial results? The ongoing patent dispute in the US has led the analyst firm to recommend firms stop all mission-critical BlackBerry deployments Analyst firm Gartner has advised its clients to halt all mission-critical deployments of Research In Motion's BlackBerry email devices because of a legal battle that could ......

Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) and Advanced Access Control (AAC) 4.2 has now been formally released
Just a short note that Citrix has actually finally released the 4.2 version Firmware for the device and the AAC components. So far I have been unable to confirm where the WI 4.2 image is, but I guess that's not quite as important? Update:The Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) and Advanced Access Control (AAC) 4.2 is available from MyCitrix under the Licensing > Channel Licensing > Download Software - whereas the WI 4.2 image is available from Downloads > Web Interface > 4.2 I am currently doing ......

C500 back from the dead - finally managed to get it back working again!
So sometimes it pays to be persistent? What the problem turned out to be was actually in my Laptop (Toshiba Portégé R100) where there is something wrong with the drivers for the SD card reader. You'll maybe have noticed my previous link to Willem's page for tools relating to ROM's for phones, etc and specifically the psdread and psdwrite to be able to manipulate the ROM's to and from the mini-SD card. When I finally realised there was actually a command line switch for PSDREAD -L that would ......

Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) as Guest on VMWare - this is now Possible!! - details here
One of the problems with anything that is contingent on specific Hardware is that it is quite difficult to test or carry out any diagnosis but it now looks possible with the advent of VMWare 5.5 it is now possible to mimic intel NIC's and as such it might actually be possible to replicate a CAG on VMWare 5.5. Check out the discussion here at VMWare **Caveat** This is on VMWare 5.5!In essence this is quite simple - as reported in the VMWare VMTN Discussion Forums by Petje, all that is needed is to ......

Orange SPV C600 is on the Orange Shop!!
Reported at CoolSmartPhone Now I know I did say that I wasn't too worried about this now that I had upgraded my C500 to WM5, but I have a confession...... I managed to stuff it up badly late last week when trying to "roll back" to WM 2003 and it's now stuck at the tri-colour Boot Loader screen. I'm nearly there and I will continue this as a little project because I can't abide NOT understanding the technology that I'm relying on. And apart from that the missus will have my guts if I've broken it!(In ......

More details on ETEN M600 and AnexTEK moboDA 3360 on MSMobiles
So MSMobiles is keeping bang up to date with more details on the ETEN M600 There is also news about a new PocketPC device that looks like a SmartPhone, the AnexTEK moboDA 3360 "... but is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC, not smartphone and has fast processor and Wi-Fi on board... apart from being very good Pocket PC phone, it can be thus considered to be good Skype phone! " But when I've had a look at the details, it quickly becomes apparent that these devices are somewhat heavier than ......

Sick of carrying two mobile phones? how about 16 SIMS on the one card?
My mate Angus is one of these poor IT chaps who's been dragging around two mobile phones for some while now, one for Work and one Private, and he finally decided to do something about it. One option involved cutting the SIM in half, which he was somewhat reluctant to do, but now he has discovered an alternative method at Sick of carrying two mobile phones where he has just started blogging. Essentially someone has come out with a SIM card that can hold 64K memory and a USB 2.0 adaptor to allow you ......

What is a Long Tail economy? and How Consultants *CAN* get their own Magic Wand
First of all, sorry for the length of this - and I'll understand if you can't be bothered? but at least go and check out the blog at Sightlines Consulting please? You know how it is with us self confessed Geeks? Are you thinking of upgrading to Server 2003 in a Citrix or Terminal Server environment? What do you do about the TSCAL's?
One of my MS Colleagues here at work was trying to get his head around how to deal with the TSCAL's when upgrading the AD to 2003, and to be fair this also involves upgrading the Hardware. They were looking at a rather complex process involving a system state restore on new Hardware etc. making sure that the FSMO was moved off the same server as the TSCAL Licensing....... all in all it started to get pretty messy Essentially be aware that under 2000 - 2000 TSCAL Licensing Service needs to be on a ......

How to Load Balance two Citrix Web Interface Servers - Brian Madden
Brian has posted a neat article that covers the Load Balancing aspect of the non-Presentation Server components (read Web Interface / Citrix Secure Gateway) for your Citrix Farm, with a good guide to other alternatives to Windows NLB and their Pricing. ConclusionLoad balancing WI servers is really simple. So go ahead and use NLB, or get fancy and buy an application switch. The bottom line is that you have options and the configuration is pretty straightforward. I've always found it very useful to ......
