The opinions expressed within are my own and should not be attributed to any other Individual, Company or the one I work for. I just happen to be a classic techie who is passionate about getting things to work as they should do (and are sometimes advertised and marketed as being able to?) and when I can I drop notes here to help others falling in to the same traps that I have fallen in to. If this has helped then please pass it on - if you feel that I have commented in error or disagree then please feel free to discuss with me either publically or privately? Cheers, Dave

TomTom 5 is now updated to 5.2 for Windows Mobile 5 - get your Download Now!
Nice little note at MSMobiles that TomTom 5 has now been updated. It's not too straight forward in that you must remove the card and update it from a Reader somewhere - but at least they have tried to be very explicit about the Fact that this WIL NOT WORK from ActiveSync, etc..... I've just got a secondary 256Mb MiniSD cardyesterday so now I can roll back the WM5 to 2003SE, back this up to the new miniSD, roll forward again to the WM5 (but now having a secure back up plan....;-) and then reformat ......

How to upgrade a C500 to WM5?
Well this has worked a treat, and I only have the briefest details here to hand at the moment so bear with me and I'll add more when I get time, but..... here are my notes for what it's worth? Caveat - don't mess with your phone unless you have a reasonable idea what you're doing? - do not blame me if it goes seriously "pear shaped"? - Caveat+++Warning+++This is a little more complicated than you might think. There are a lot of ways to screw up where you need a lot of patience and willingness to ......

Orange SPV C600 appears on Orange Business Website - but I have a C500 on WM5 ;-)
Well I see yesterday that CoolSmartPhone has posted that the C600 is making an appearance on the UK Orange website, and although I will be keeping a keen eye on how this progresses, I'm not hugely bother that much as I've finally got around to spending the time in getting my head around the Windows Mobile 5 Upgrade instructions to flash my C500 to WM5. I was a bit concerned at one point when it looked like I could no longer get an ActiveSync connection, but the main thing is that if you've been updating ......

Delays and downgraded forecasts from Blackberry?
So I saw this in ZDNet this morning, Looks like MS still has a reasonable window of opportunity available but they (and the Carriers?) really need to get the MSFP out shortly and solve any of the issues with WM5? Research In Motion has cut its new-subscriber forecast for the third time this year, after suffering delays shipping new models Research In Motion on Wednesday lowered its new-subscribers projection by 8 percent for the rest of the year after two new BlackBerry models failed to ship on time. ......

A different take on encrypted sessions for Citrix?
Well this is quite a different slant on how to maintain a continuous encrypted session from a Mobile Device or Laptop back to a Citrix Server regardless of whether you want to use GSM/GPRS/WiFi? I'll let my mate Dave over on his Blog explain about Apollo from Brand Communications a bit more, but I can definitely see the advantages from a Hospital, Police, Fire service sort of perspective in that although they need more security, they also need the mobility aspect? Quote:Put very simple their product, ......

o2 XDA Mini Now Available - when might we see an Orange M3000?
This little note in from CoolSmartPhone Come on o2! The UK network have smashed onto the Windows Mobile scene of late with their XDA SP and XDA Exec. Now they've gone one better and launched the o2 XDA Mini onto the o2 UK website. It's selling for £99.99 on Pay Monthly and is the same device as the T-Mobile MDA Vario we reviewed last week. Excellent stuff! We love the tiny HTC Wizard (which is what this is) and we wish more networks (hello Orange) in the UK would pick it up! ......

ETEN M600 Pocket PC phone - more details and a review

Another non-HTC entrant to the Windows Mobile 5 arena, and what's really nice is that it has a juicy 400Mhz processor, and the Form Factor doesn't look too bad.

It will be nice to see one in the flesh at some stage?

Citrix's Access Gateway and Advanced Access Control looks poised to become a market leader?
I was chatting to someone at Citrix the other day about the Access Gateway and they are clearly pleased with it's debut so far, some interesting facts that came my way are: Globally the Access Gateway started off at #30, being a fairly late entrant in the running It has now risen to #5 on revenue in just over 6 months Citrix would argue that because it's cheaper it would be fairer to measure by units shipped, in that case it's now #3 Globally Apparently the other two in front are Juniper and F5 Q3 ......

A collection of tools for Ipaq, XDA(Wallaby), XDA-II(Himalaya), XDA-IIs(Blueangel), MDA Compact(Magician), i-mate SP3, i-mate SP3i, MPx200, Voq, Mitac, PPC 2003, WM 2003
How about this for a very interesting discovery that I made today? While looking through the documentation that RiXSTER thoughtfully included with "Spv c500 Windows Mobile 2005 Wm5 Upgrade Rom.rar" I came across the details of how to use TeraTermPro to connect to the SmartPhone/PocketPC via USB. But even more interesting was another link that lead me to http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme... Essentially these tools will allow you to store an image of your current Phone as a ROM, pull ......

How to Bypass Compulsory Web Registration??
Just a handy hint for when you need to find info on Forums etc. that require registration, login, etc. and you don't want to bother, or have the time? Try www.bugmenot.com I needed just to find some info on www.rdpguru.com and I'd completely forgotten my creds, couldn't even guess the UserID, etc. This turned up anon/anon as valid creds and hey Presto! we're back in business and I'm back to doing my job. Just as it says on the Tin - "Bypass Compulsory Web Registration" Extra: And many thanks to Hannes ......

Does anyone think that the Price of Mobile 5 devices will slow down deployment of Exchange 2003 SP2?
I don't think so if this deal for the MDA Vario from T-Mobile over at CoolSmartPhones is anything to go by? I still swear by Orange, but if they don't start picking up their game they may start to see a certain amount of churn leading up to Xmas? From CoolSmartPhones:Good prices on hot new Smartphones and Windows Mobile powered stuff, that's what we like. We've poked, prodded and tickled our CoolSmartPhone shop staff into submission and they're dished up some excellent deals for our loyal readers. ......

Exact replica of Star Trek Communicator will be powered by Windows Mobile for Smartphone
I kid you not, looks like sometime very soon (possibly Q1 - 2006) all those Trekky Fans out there will be able to have their very own Communicator. (presumably the Beaming Function will be a rather expensive additional option ;-)More details at MSMobiles or Sona Mobile ......

Does anyone else hanker after this little device? the Orange SPV M3000...
It would seem it's already available in France for 250 Euros, and yet they're not thinking of releasing it here? More details on Orange's French web site, complete with EDGE and WIFI 802.11b...... And at CoolSmartPhone they have been having a poll as to how many of us here in the UK would like to buy... I'm still a bit concerned about the size of this, or I should say I was, until I checked out the full review of T-Mobiles offering at CoolSmartPhones where there are some very nice shots that clearly ......

Free Server 2003 TS CAL License Program for Windows XP ends December 31, 2005 (yes FREE!!)

However, I just learned that this program will expire on December 31, 2005, so make sure you get your free license soon. Huh? As you might remember, in the days of Windows ......

8Mb Broadband for £9.99/month?? Is this for real?
I did mention some while back that I'd heard that Orange were going to going to be offering a cut price Broadband due to the tie in with Wannado, but this almost sounds too good to be true? Check out the details of Orange's offer The main crunch being that you can get 8Mb if available, BUT you end up with a 2Mb cap/month Customers taking the Promotion will be connected to the Standard User Wanadoo product capped at 2 GB per month, for £9.99 per month. You may increase your cap to the following ......

Have a look at the new Xda Atom - will O2 have this here by Xmas?
I was digging around looking for what else might be available on the Windows Mobile 5 O/S and came across this from O2, I Haven't checked on whether it will be available here in the UK or not yet? And although it's not my favorite form facter (PocketPC) it does look kind of small, in fact they've done away with any pretence of having a QWERTY keyboard similar to the Orange M500, and included things like an FM Radio. This looks like quite a nice piece of kit, more here ......

Top Management of Microsoft in panic? - visionary memos sent to Microsoft employees
Another interesting bit of info from MSMobiles: While we were complaining here for several years already that Microsoft lacks innovativeness and thus is missing out on many major business opportunities, it looks like Bill Gates (de facto boss of Microsoft) and Steve Ballmer (CEO of Microsoft) have noticed it just now! Major changes at Microsoft coming! Read on! Lately Steve and Bill have promoted Ray Ozzie to a position of CTO - Chief Technical Officer. With this catchy name and visionary statements ......

Review : i-mate SP5m Windows Mobile SmartPhone - WiFi in your pocket!
News from MSMobiles of a review of the i-mate SP5m at MobileTechReview. I wonder how my Brother in Australia will take the news that it's too slow for Skype? I think the availability of WiFi and the use of Skype was one of the reasons that he decided on this after seeing the C500 when he was over here earlier this year ......

Vital Scan SmartPhone diagnostic software released in beta version - for your CAR!!
Yes for your Bluetooth enabled car! fancy resetting that annoying Maintenance sign? Is this for real? Another wow from me, this can only bring real benefits in roadside repairs, especially given the way modern vehicles are developing more of a propensity for reliance on electronics. More here courtesy of MSMobiles, or the full story at Vital Engineering ......

E-TEN M600 Pocket PC phone goes on sale in November 2005
From MSMobiles: E-TEN M600 is by now the only small-size Pocket PC phone with built-in Wi-Fi and full-size SD card slot. Since some people already have multi-gigabyte SD cards (even 4GB SD cards!), they would like to reuse them in new phones, but since some of them have only mini-SD card slot, then whole investment and software and media libraries that they gathered in their full-size SD cards are lost. Not in the case of E-TEN M600. Now go on admit it, doesn't this bit of kit look fantastic? (maybe ......
