SnagIt 9!

In case you hadn't heard, TechSmith released the newest version of SnagIt June 10, 2008. I have been playing with it for a while, and thought I would share my thoughts and loves with you.

Many of you know I love SnagIt. This version makes me love it even more!

Let me count the ways:

  1. New interface - They have ribbonized the SnagIt Editor. Now, many of you are thinking, "No, please, don't". Try it before you hate it. The new interface for the editor is really slick looking:

  2. Multiple image edit - You can have multiple images open for edit at the same time. Makes for a much better work flow when you need to merge images together.
  3. New process - You no longer have to close the editor when you are taking multiple shots or working with multiple images. Leave it open along with the main interface and you can pretty much have instant access to any part of the tool set you need.
  4. OneClick Capture - Turn it on and click where you want to take your shot. Almost as cool as timed captures. Integrated library - a task pane leads you directly to the shots you have taken, whether they are currently open or closed. Don't want something in the library? Show the library, select the image, and delete it with the delete button from your keyboard

  5. Flags - You can now flag your images to make it easier to find them. There are 10 flags you can apply, plus you can attach your own keywords to the images.

  6. Fancier effects - You are going to have to play with this yourself to believe it, but the shapes, arrows, text, and everything else look even better than ever!
  7. Convert images from the editor - Instead of creating an image, saving it, then using the batch tools to convert it, you can now convert from the editor any image or images you want. No leaving the editor and coming back in to check your work.
  8. Instant access to Accessories and Stamps - Download a new accessory or stamp from the site and it is immediately available to you in the editor.
  9. New editing interface and tools for videos - Yeah, it got ribbonized too. But even better, videos go in the same editor interface as images. So, you can be working with still images and video images at the same time. You can still only save them as AVIs, but they are much easier to work with!

Now, it's your turn….

Tell me what you think of the new SnagIt. Download it from the TechSmith site and play around with it. Post a comment telling us all what you find the most useful change and why. Believe me, I have only listed my top 10. There are many more changes and improvements that you will find as you play.

Why would you want to post back your additions? Because, thanks to Betsy Weber of TechSmith, I have two keys for SnagIt 9 to give away. A week from now, I will pick from the two winners from the posted comments and get them their keys. (That means that you need to be sure to put your email address in the comment form so that I can get the key to you. No one else will see your email address other than me and I will not keep it unless you tell me to.)

Bonus: If you decide to blog or otherwise web-write about the new SnagIt, this post, and the contest, let me know. I might just have an extra drawing for all of you!

This looks great! Was getting very excited, until I saw in the system requirements it is only Windows, and I work on a Mac :(
Still, since I really work on both platforms, just more frequently on a Mac, this is something I will consider for my Windows machines. Thanks for the introduction to it!

Btw - Vitamin CH - love that! Been taking that vitamin religiously all my life! LOL. 6/10/2008 8:31 PM | Robyn

# Love it!!! Still...

I love Snagit all the way. Ive been using it for about three years now and it has proved itself very handy!! This new Snagit is certainly very slick, love the way they have arranged the tool bar on top. It gives you more time to edit and work on ur images. However there is one simple comand that they haven't still given this snag it version, which is the rotation capability for selected areas. It is very important specially when ur trying to give something extra to ur capture. 6/10/2008 10:45 PM | Olin PLacido

Thanks for the comments Robyn and Olin.

Robyn, You might want to look into TechSmith's Jing Project. It is free and does run on the Mac.

Olin, You are correct, you still cannot free rotate a selection, but you can flip it horizontally or vertically. Check out the Rotate button on the Edit tab. Another trick is to cut the section you want to highlight, paste it into a new picture, rotate that, copy it, paste it back into the original snag. If you want a screencast on this tip, let me know and I will put it on the list.

Nice review!
The best part is the common editor for photos and videos. Something I would need for sure in my instructional videos (screenshots + procedural videos).

I might consider getting this one. I'm a Camtasia user, and contemplating getting SnagIt as well.

P.S. That is, if you don't send me a key :) 6/11/2008 5:14 AM | Abhishek Baxi

It took me about 11 seconds to fall in love with the new SnagIt 9 UI.

The dark background is more eco- and eye-friendly. Eco-friendly, because black doesn't use as much power as white on a CRT monitor.

And eye-friendly, because less white glare means my eyes get less tired! When you're working on graphics all day, eye-friendliness can be an uber-important feature.

# I love the new SnagIt 9, too

Great minds think alike ... ;-) I too blogged about the new SnagIt 9 version today: http://www.camtasia-training.de/2008/06/15/attraktiver-einfacher-produktiver-snagit-9-ist-da/
As an Office 2007-user, the new UI feels very intuitive for me. And the more visual interface makes it easier to use, even though English isn't my first language. 6/15/2008 9:46 AM | Ute-S

How appropriate to stumble across this post! SnagIt is my newest best friend - as of Saturday! I am finding it so easy to use for screenshots. Don't ask how I did that before! 6/16/2008 4:24 PM | Glenda Watson Hyatt

I'm in nerd heaven...

The last time I used SnagIt extensively was a few versions ago. I found it to be a bit more awkward and unwieldy than I was comfortable with. Not anymore.

I'm not an artistically inclined person, so I often rely on templates and easy to use programs to do anything graphically. I've most recently used PaintShop Pro and we all know how hard that program is to learn if you don't understand hues and vectors and tubes. I found SnagIt does nearly everything I've used PaintShop Pro for, but in a much easier manner. I found the new ribbon-style menus to be easily navigable and very user-friendly in terms of finding what I need and understanding what I've found. This is perfect for a nerd with no artistic knowledge.

The editor is my favorite part. I love how easy it is to combine images by dragging one to the other and how flawlessly you can move objects around once you've dropped them on the canvas. The stamps that you are able to add are highly addictive and I can see myself using them extensively (with photos) to create new images for my scrapbooks, as well as my children using them for school projects. (Note: I've already downloaded all of the extra stamps you can get from the website - they're great!!!)

I know the new version is in it's infancy, but in the near future, I would love to see compatibility for OpenOffice output for those of us who do not use the Microsoft Office package. Although you can output to clipboard and paste in the OpenOffice programs, it would be nice to have one-button portability. I would also like to see output options for Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, Plurk, Photobucket and some of the other popular sites and programs.

All-in-all, great program - two thumbs up!!

I have been a long-time user of SnagIt since a product manager in our start-up showed me excitedly how to use version 4.x.
Initially, I fell in love with the idea of being able to capture a very tall web page without splicing together multiple screen shots in Photoshop. I've since grown to enjoy the use of this handy tool to write user guides, to point out specifically, which option in which menu should be selected in order to produce the desired results, or to get a nice clean capture of a toolbar without having to do any clean-up work.

The features added to this tool since then continue to amaze and surprise, whether it's to copy the text out of a window which would have wasted a ton of time better spent coding, or the ability to capture timed screen shots to capture the important parts of a third-party software demo.

The latest version is pretty special. The UI has been given a fresh new look, and the ribbon bars will ease even the novice user into their first screen shots. There are a few products that get me to pull out my wallet and just buy the next version; SnagIt is one of those "gotta-have-it" utilities. 6/16/2008 4:58 PM | Eric Anderson

Im just getting used to the v9 interface, and it is quite efficient when you learn where everything lives.

Can anyone tell me where the images stored in the Image Library are actually saved on the local machine? Ive searched for them, and looked for a setting in the options to configure the location - but havent been able to find anything.

It seems that the overall consensus is that it's great :-)

I am just waiting for the spraycan to appear among the drawing tools. 9/11/2008 4:27 AM | Peter - Snagit Guide

I'm just getting used to the v9 interface, and it is quite efficient when you learn where everything lives.

However I have couple questions?
-Can anyone tell me where the images stored in the Image Library are actually saved on the local machine? I've searched for them, and looked for a setting in the options to configure the location - but haven't been able to find anything.
-also for some reason the move of images to word, PowerPoint doesn't work for me and I couldn't find a explanation doc for it.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
