TechPulse 2008 Conference - 2nd session review

My second session at the TechPulse Conference is a topic called "Small Business Server 2008:  Sneak Peak" presented by MyTechPartners and Success Computer Consulting (both together presented).  Again, another great presentation style.  They copresented and complimented each other well.  The banter was back and forth and you could tell that these two organizations partner well together.  Another great session guys....

Key points from the session:

Who is SBS 2008 Designed for?
Small (5-75 users) organizations who need:
stable, industry standard technology infrastructure
fully featured email solution
anytime anywhere access to the network
up to date security products

SBS is not designed for networks with over 75 users

What's Included:   Standard Edition and Premium Edition
Standard Edition:
Windows Server 2008
Exchange Server 2007
WSS V3
Forefront Security for Exchange (120 day trial)
windows live onecare for server

Premium edition
Everything in Standard plus:
additional windows Server 2008 license
MS SQL Server 2008

What makes it better?
Exchange 2007 - Improved spam filtering, OUtlook Web access 2007
Remote web workplace - OWA 2007, access to files on the server, better user interface
WSS v 3.0 - better integration with Office, recycle bin, backup
Mobility - Workforce that is mobile

Behind the Scenes:  What makes it better?
Easy migration - designed to help make the upgrade from SBS2003 seamless and transparent... less downtime!  This also applies to desktops
More secure - built on current technology, for the internet we know today
Has fewer restrictions that "push" our clients to more expensive alternatives
Only need to buy client access licenses (CALs) one at a time

"In our business, speed is iverthing.  When we need inforamtion, we need it fast, from anywhere, including the racetrack or the garage.  SBS 2008's remote web workplace is reason enough to justify the switch because it allows us to be more nimble, and even I understand how to User it"  -RObby Gordon Motorsports - NASCAR team with 40 employees.  Charlotte, NC

Upgrade Considerations:
Hardware considerations:
 Requires 64-bit hardware
We recommend servers with a minimum 3GHz processor, 4GB RAM and 150GB of Drive Space

Version Upgrades
There is no "after the fact" version upgrade option
Microsoft Software Assurance includes upgrades

Licensing Considerations
If you have active SA on SBS2003, you qualify for SBS 2008
Cost for SBS 2008 is a significant discount from full products, but has increased from SBS 2003
It may be more cost effective to "re-buy" SBS2003 with Software assurance than to buy SBS 2008 (only an option prior to SBS2008 release)
