Topic:  Unisys High-Volume ETL Techniques

Speaker: Bob Murphy, Unisys

Unisys and Microsoft recently teamed to demonstrate that SQL Server 2008 can load 1 TB of Business Intelligence data in less than 30 minutes on an enterprise class system.  In this talk we present the practical techniques, common tools, and queries used to discover and to eliminate performance bottlenecks.  We also show how the methodical use of Soft NUMA, IntPolicy, Dynamic Management Views, and performance monitoring tools enabled the project to scale from processing 50 thousand rows per second to over 4 million rows per second.

Bob Murphy serves as a Consulting Software Engineer with Unisys Corporation.  He is a 34-year veteran of the company, currently working in the Product Development Performance Group.  His team provides pre-sales and post-sales SQL Server consulting services to clients who use large enterprise class servers.  They are also responsible for conducting and publishing high-water mark Business Intelligence benchmarks and hold  several "top 10" positions in the Transaction Processing Performance Council's (TPC) list of benchmark publications.

Take Control of the Enterprise: Effective Solutions for Governing your Environment With Policy Based Management

Policy Based Management in SQL Server 2008 is poised to change the way we manage the complexity of their enterprise SQL Server environments. We are challenged with maintaining consistency across large distributed environments and enforcing strict regulatory requirements stipulating database configurations and server settings. These challenges are even greater when multiple versions of SQL Server are introduced. We will introduce the concepts of Policy Based Management and demonstrate strategies to extend Policy Based management across all instances in the enterprise - including SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000.

Lara Rubbelke brings her passion for architecting, implementing and improving SQL Server solutions to the community as a Technology Specialist for Microsoft.  Her expertise involves both OLTP and OLAP systems, data management, performance tuning, encryption, ETL, and the Business Intelligence lifecycle.  She is an active board member of the local PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server) chapter and regularly delivers technical presentations at local, regional and national conferences, user groups and webcasts. Notably, Lara has presented at Tech Ed (2006 and 2007), the PASS Summit (2006 and 2007), the Minneapolis SQL Server 2005 Launch, and delivered numerous webcasts on MSDN and TechNet.  Lara authored the Microsoft whitepaper detailing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition features and was a contributing author of "Expert SQL Server 2005 Development".  Prior to joining Microsoft, Lara was a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP).
