What I am playing

What I am Reading

I have been looking for a software for a specific purpose but havent found it yet, so was wondering if anyone out there knew of something that serves this purpose.

Let me explain.
I want to have a Centralised Media Repository at home, like  a server which other devices (laptops, pda etc) can connect to and listen to mp3s etc off the server (possibly by streaming).  Users connecting to the server should be able to search media, browse media by album, artist etc.

Does anyone know of any software that suits this purpose?

You can get a windows home server or if you have any version of Windows (XP, Vista, 7). Media Center is built in and can do what you've just mentioned.

I have exactly the same requirement.

I would take a look at the following if PDA / Mobile Phone is a definare requirement.

http://www.orb.com
http://tversity.com/

Both are free and stream content. TVersity is also dnla compliant (Xbox 360 / PS3 etc...)

Personally I also use XBox Media Center www.xbmc.org around my house. I like that fact that it goes to the internet for Music / Film and TV information and it just works out the box with its built in codecs.

Windows Media Center is also good but I prefer the searching abilities on XBMC (Name, Year, Artist, Album, Genre etc...)

Windows Media Center can do this fully with add-ons (some functionality is included out of the box)

If you have any further questions, please email me and we can discuss further.

Cheers

Giles

Thanks for the comments guys,

I tried XBMC, but its too media server-ish, to work with my WM phone. I couldnt figure out how to connect to it from the phone or WMP on another machine.

Orb seems really cool, I am fascinated with it at the moment.
thanks for the link
