Tangible Thoughts SharePoint, MOSS? and all the other questions

I wanted to try out DVWPs with OSS 2007, so I fired up SharePoint Designer and chose DataView -> Insert DataView from the menu, clicked on a DataSource like a SharePoint list (even tried a DB) in the task pane and double clicked (or Show Data from the context menu).

What I get is the error below

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

"The server returned a non specific error when trying to get data from the datasource"

Is anyone else seeing this in SharePoint Designer 2007?

No, Mine works pretty well.
Did you try to disable the net sens service?
1. start>run>cmd
2. net stop sens

try again.

I've seen this error mentioned in a newsgroup somewhere.

I should try to stop this service as well as mine also does not work.

I don't see any of the web parts (lists/libraries) I create show up in the web part gallery via SP Designer 2007.

Hi,
I had this problem when my site had an alternat access mapping and I was connecting from SPD to the alternate address. It work fine from the primary (host name in my case) URL.

Even when you get it going there are a few bugs, especially when in split view and you do something in the code view, then click “Save”. CRASH.
Roll on Technical Refresh, things should be much better then.

I had the same error when retrieving from a sql view. I limited my view to return the top 100 records, re-started Sharepoint Designer and then was able to Show Data under the connection. I completed the design of the page and then updated the view to remove the TOP 100 from the select list. Works for me. Perhaps there's a limit to the number of records to return because Designer is attempting to show you sample data? Just a guess. Hope it helps - a little after the fact though I know...

I think it really depends on the Operation(Method) you want to get data from using sharepoint designer.Try using the one's that don't require parameters and you would be fine and if it need parameters you would have to supply them.
Hope that helps

i am trying to show data from a sharepoint list, residing on the same server, but I get this error. I try another list, and it shows the data, but then it gives me the error when i try to convert the dataview to xslt.. I tried all the above unsuccessfully, Im not sure if the TOP 10 * works for me, since where would I write the SQL when trying to access a list?. Anyone got it to work?

I had a similar problem setting up an XML data source to an RSS XML link on a news site. I went into code view and, in the design window, right click and Reformated XML. I then rewrote the URL directly into code. Seemed to work after that.

Has anyone found a resolution to this issue. I am getting the issue on a prodcution server, but it works fine on my development server....what gives? I can take the XSL from the dev box and copy it into the page on the Production box and it works....well in SPD it shows the error but the actual page does show the changes I made.

Hi,

I have a problem with the SPD. I am able to get the sharepoint lists which i created in the MOSS 2007 and showing the data when I give the option to Showdata. I tried to perform join of these two lists by using the Link list and then Inserted DataView in the aspx page. When I do the Showdata on the new link list the datasource details pane is showing grayed out with the same error msg "The server returned a non specific error when trying to get data from the datasource"

Any help is appreciated..

Thnaks.

I have created a Data View WebPart using SharePoint designer. I have added filter on DVWP also have selected the option of sorting and filtering on column header. Now when I pass “Select * from tablename” then ‘clear this filter ‘with drop down menu on column header works fine but when I add the filter with “Where” clause then it doesn’t work & clicking on ‘Ascending/Descending’ gives error.

Please guide and help to solve this issue. We are in production and are stuck with this filter issue.

Thanks.

I got this error when I played with the dataview from a XML source.
using http://servername/mysubbie URL instead of ip address fixed my problem.
I think this got something to do with auth

I am getting the same error....trying to create a data source view of a sharepoint list on the same server, but when i try to insert the data source get the "unspecified error" message. Other lists in my site work just fine with the same steps. I have tried to change parameter names to url but this does nothing to change. I can see the xml code on existing data source views, but the page is an error on the design view and the data source details section is an error.

Any ideas????

I get this problem on all my DVWP's for a list where I made any structural change (like deleting or adding a column to the list).

I've essentially had to re-create the Data Sources and DVWP's, for lack of a better solution. I was hoping to cruise some forums and find a simpler solution, but so far no luck...

With mickeysoft, the solution is always, delete your files, reinstall the whole operating system / server, start from scratch. I'd love to work for M$ - if my programs were as poor quality as to return "nonspecific errors" from their own house-written database servers (LOL) I would be fired, no questions asked. They are marketing GENIUSES.
