Those CAML tools I was looking for
Hey, do you remember sometime back I was searching for some CAML tools. I think I have found them. Patrick's got one at U2U and Stramit's got one too. btw, Patrick, I think you need to mention that CAML testing will only work on the same box as SharePoint is installed on. Same problem on my tool (because it uses the SP API, not the WebServices), but I am sure we SP Devs dont mind ;) Stramit's blog posting has some other cool tools as well ......

News, RTF and No Pictures.
Today I feel like bitching about the Area Listings template and Rich Text Fields If I said 'I wanted a way of publishing news items on a Portal' I am sure all of you working with Portal would go 'Aha use the Portal News Area", but in my opinion, the Portal news area might be cool, but it is also limited. First off all, most of the features of lists are missing. Namely The ability to DVWP the listings in an area easily Edit listings in DataSheet mode The Export to Spreadsheet is not available (ya ......

The suspense of Fabrikam

The download of Fabrikam date for Fabrikam has been pushed. This time to April.

Can I say typical MS Release pattern. But then again, I am not complaining.

Sonar demo on
Recently Scott pointed to which is built on Community Server. If hop on to that site, you'll see a video of Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky) giving us a neat demo of how he is using Sonar to mix tracks. Pretty cool if you are into the SW editing/mixing/dj ing scene. Me, in my free time I sometimes play around with Traktor DJ Studio. The music editing scene is just beyond my capabilities ......

Colombo Heat
Today with the Temperature being close to 32 Degrees Celcius and the Humitdity being close to 90% I acclaim the inventions of Willis Haviland Carrier and Schulyer Wheeler. Boy am I glad those guys were born. Its not so much the heat; its the humidity that gets to you. And yes April is the hottest month of the year, which is almost upon us ......

Control your PC with your brain
A MA based company has developed Software and Hardware that would let you control your PC just by thinking the action. Neowin has the scoop about it. "Having a chip implanted into your brain", I am not sure if I am OK with that. Control your PC with thoughts sounds cool anyways. Right now our human bodies are a bottleneck as to how fast we can do things on a PC (e.g. how fast we can send out a message purly depends on how fast we can type, not how fast we can think the message). But I am still not ......

IE Context Menus For SharePoint
As a Site Admin dont you hate those WSS Sites that have the default 'Top Navigation' removed, leaving you with no easy way of getting to Site Settings or the Create Page? Well I do, and I resorted to drastic measures recenlty. Following Philips example I was able to squeeze a few minutes into writing a few IE context menus. Here is the replacement script for launching the WSS Site Settings page <script type="text/vbscript"> settings = "_layouts/1033/settings.aspx" create = "_layouts/1033/create.aspx" ......

An Amazing Skill possed by some
Lately I've been playing HL2: Capture the Flag online, its mundo fun. Unlike Counterstrike you get to live a little longer, and fight a lot more due to the Skirmishes. Now I am no alien to Multiplayer FPSs, having played a good deal of Quake2, Half Life DeathMatch, Unreal Tournament, Counter Srike etc. But I am amazed by the skill of some gamers at Circle Strafing. I've seen players dance circles around me while having their cross-hairs dead centre on my head, and whilst occasionally chatting at ......

Renault on Pole at Sepang 2005
Quite an interesting race the Sapang 2005 F1 GP turned out to be. Renault andToyota on the Podium, a tire puncture on a Mclaren, and Ferrari’s being lapped. Fernando Alonso finished on pole position with Jarno Truili coming in 2nd 16seconds behind, followed by Nick Heidfeld in the BMW Willams. The have been a lot of complaints regarding the new tire restrictions in F1, but my viewpoint is that it adds a new requirement to perfection. If your car is really perfect then it would handle those tires ......

About those amazing graphics AOE3 will have
Ok, we've already seen the screenshots of AOE3 and we know its going to have amazing graphics. But just how amazing will it be. Apparently the Ensemble chaps were showing at GDC, and heres gamespys recap of what AOE3 will have. Excerpt " If a musketeer is hit by an enemy musketball, and your 3D card is powerful enough to do it, his torso will deform as he's running so you can actually see the bullet impact. His hat and backpack and musket are also ......

Hit 25
Ok, Today makes me 25 years old. When I was around 18 I used to think that anyone above 25 was old. I mean I was revving up to get in to the software business, and there the young ruled, perhaps becuase the IT industry in Sri Lanka was very young. So I have this notion lobbed in my brain that when you reach 25, you are getting old or past your prime. Do I feel any different? No, just a slightly depressed that another year has ticked away and I am not where I want to be. Let me recap 1. Got Dream ......

Ray Ozzie, Microsoft and Office
Cnet has an interview with Ray Ozzie, regarding how he will be involved with Microsoft. I think Groove's acquisition by Microsoft will be a great thing (heck it was bound to happen anyway). I've played around with groove about a couple of years back, and I liked what I saw. Anyways in a previous post of mine about Moon Edit I hinted at how real-time interactive collaboration was lacking in the office system (SharePoint namely). This is where I feel the P2P technology behind groove can really ......

SharePoint Updates and backups
OK here is a little problem you might eventually come across if you are running stsadm backups. Fact is stsadm backups are version dependant. Now initially I assumed that it was only service packs that affect sharepoint's version, but apparently even security updates count too. Sharath points out a few tips on one of my previous blog posts. Thankfully there arent many patches for SharePoint ......

Ray Ozzie could be the man

From what I know about Ray Ozzie, he created Lotus Notes, then that got acquired by IBM, and then he created Groove which will now be acquired by Microsoft.

Interesting, is Ray just incubating these companies?

Finished HL2
I finished playing HL2 yesterday. I can tell you that the essence of the HL2 story is much the same as the orignal Half Life, i.e. You (i.e. Gordon Freeman) are pivotal in the story, but you have no clue as to what is going on. For you just getting from one point to another causes dire consequences to Earth. Fortunately Chan Karunamuni who is more more enlightened than me has compiled his interpretation of the entire HalfLife saga. Check it out here ......

Brooding about RSS & SharePoint
Ok, you perhaps already know that there are components out there that will let you syndicate the contents of SharePoint sites. Rss Syndication may or may not be a welcome alternative to SharePonit alerts but lets face it for alerts regarding a site I'd prefer the Rss route, I am sure we all hate inbox clutter. So here is a list of few of the Rss syndication systems out there - Syndication Generator from Maurice - Rss Syndicator by Sig Webber - SPSynd by DevHawk Out of those 3 the one I prefer is ......

Have you hear of Frassle?

No? Well neither did I till it came as hit when i was googling for some information buried deep in my blog.

Rorys got HL2
Apparently it seems like Rory has got hold of HalfLife 2. Rory watch out those combines might sneak up on you are resting. HL2 is a fantastic game. Lately I've just been goofing off in the game coz I dont want it to finish. But still I think Valve left out a few stuff out of the game. After playing FarCry I really miss not being able to peep around corners. Peepng would have drastically changed the game. Also weapon grip in Farcry was more realistic, what I mean is where when you are aiming a gun ......

NetBT on strike on Windows Server 2003
I’ve noticed a couple of weird happenings with Windows Server 2003. It’s really peculiar.
