Anyway I was going to link to the following articles Seattle Times Article on Windows XP Starter Edition Microsoft Press Release on Starter Edition The Register on the Starter Edition Techdirt on the Starter Edition But.... Just a bit of commentry Right now I think there really is no value in the Starter Edition, infact its 800x600 resolution ......

Dubbed the "Windows Graphics Foundation" (WGF), Microsoft will reunite DirectDraw and Direct3D into one package allowing the graphics subsystem of a PC to be completely integrated into the operating system. Reports cite the latest versions of the WGF to be at version 0.99, just shy of an initial release. The initial release of WGF will allow hardware vendors ......

Half-Life 2 held hostage?
Did you read this news about HL2. Oh No! I forsee more delays. Half-Life 2 held hostage? Court filings show VU Games has the right to sit on finished Half-Life 2 code for up to six months. Could it be deja vu all over again? As part of GameSpot's ongoing look into the two-year-old copyright infringement case that pits business partners Valve Inc. and Vivendi Universal Games against each other in US District Court, additional documents uncovered this week reveal an interesting ace up VUG's sleeve. ......

Guess where our troops are going?
Guess where are troops are going? Haitti! Yep, right in to the middle of hurricane territory. The funny thing is now that there is no War to kill them; they felt a bit a ‘too alive’ and decided a hurricane was almost the same excitement as fighting Tigers in our back yard. Anyways, humour-aside, my sympathies goes out to all those ppl in Haiti and the other nations that were battered by this hurricane streak ......

Firefox as MyIE2
Recently I was writing a mail to a friend of mine, who wanted to know how I customized Firefox to give me the same features as MYIE2 (which I used to love). So I thougth I'd share the content with you as well. Actually there is nothing much to it, all you got to know is the proper extension to install. My current list to duplicate most of MYIE2 (now known as Maxthon) functionality is Tab Browser Extensions (TBE) Petit TBE All in one gestures Super drag and go miniT Ie view add bookmark here copy ......

Interesting F1 Championship history.
I was looking for a list online to use as some testdata for a certain SharePoint tool I use internally when I came across this link. The site gives you a run down of the F1 championship history. What interesting is you can see what engines the teams have been running way back then, and what teams are now non-existent. For instance - Mc Laren were running on Ford and Porsche way before they were on Honda engines. - Williams were using Ford and then Honda engines - Lotus used to compete in F1 ......

Google Browser
This hit my scanners today. A couple of folks from Microsoft and Sun have left to join Google. So far it is rumored that Google is planning on building a web browser. What I don’t understand is with FireFox, Mozilla, Opera, etc why bother. But then I am inclined to think that it might be a contribution to the Mozilla effort or a spin-off based on Mozilla. The other angle to this is that now Microsoft and Sun might have a few vacancies J Any predictions anyone on what the browser will be called. How ......

Several sources online are pointing to this court-room battle between Valve and Vivendi (or Sierra) regarding infringement Half Life Interlectual property.

Pilawoos on TIME
Whilst traveling with a friend of mine from work the other day, my friends Dad told me that a famous food joint here in Sri Lanka was featured on TIME magazine. Wow TIME took notice of Pilawoos. Extracting a WebPart Page, DVWPs and Saving Document Library Templates
Some things I got burnt by recently. Hope you guys are aware of these. 1) If you right click on a WebPart Page on a document library and say Save Target As (i.e. from IE’s context menu) what you are going to get is the HTML normally sent to the browser and not the WebPart composition. It makes perfect sense actually since the browser is requesting for a ‘Smart Page’ from SharePoint and there for SharePoint sends it HTML. Now having said that even though it makes perfect sense it is not too obvious. ......

Tweaks I am looking forward to
Perhaps it’s a sign that I am getting old (although I really doubt that since I am along way from 30 and still play Counter Strike often). Recently I’ve been scouring the net for tweaks to products I use just to find ways of enabling features that I could really look forward to. The 2 on the top of my list are Outlook 2003 I’ve been looking for a tweak or a ‘How-To to create a view similarly to how GMail shows the inbox and emails stacked by conversations. And I don’t mean the default ‘Group by Conversations’ ......

A funny thing happened
My machine crashed today! and I am a bit puzzled about it. The crash was a BSOD crash, with the Stop error being 0X000000008E (0X00000005, 0X80588318, 0XF4E4ACC4, 0X00000000). Right now I blame the hardware, from what I have read typical reasons for the 0X000000008E crash are either the memory or the BIOS. Anyway while I was in a foray seeking out a reason for the crash, I came across this thread on the newsgroups about a user facing the 0X000000008E Stop error, which eventually turned out to be ......

Moving Contents of Issues Lists are impossible?
Recently a colleague of mine was faced with the problem of moving content from one WSS Site to another, with almost all the lists you can save the content in a template and recreate the list, but that is not possible with the Issues List. For some reason beyond my comprehension the Issues List does not let you save the content to a template. Here is a small tip on this, but I do not recommend it. The SharePoint ‘_Site’ database contains a table called UserData that stores the contents of all lists. ......

(SPS) SSO_E_CANARY_VALIDATION_FAILURE error solved thanks to the help of a very nice guy.
My earlier frustration with a programming issue I had with SharePoint Portal Server Single Sign On (SPS SSO) came to the attention of very nice chap inside Redmond . All I can say about this chap is that he is very nice, goes by the name of Chris, and works with SharePoint Portal Server; Did I say he was nice guy already? Well anyway he is a nice chap. He was able to throw a suggestion at me that actually bowled me over. It was one of those things that go totally un-noticed until someone points it ......

(SPS) SSO in SharePoint is driving me nuts
Actually I am complaining about very simple bit of code. It is so simple that even I could write it (or copy and paste it) a million times. All I want to do is to set a user’s Credentials into the Single SignOn database from a WebPart, but the frigging thing keeps failing. string[] rgSetCredentialData = new string[2]; rgSetCredentialData[0] = "2ser"; rgSetCredentialData[1] = "rb26dett"; Credentials.SetCredentials( 1, "TestSSOAPP", rgSetCredentialData); The error returned is SSO_E_CANARY_VALIDATION_FAI... ......

Alien-aware machines
Amanda points to Alienware’s 4ghz machine. If only I had the cash J What sounds most pleasing about their services is this “Send in your favorite games or purchase them from Alienware and your ALX technician will install, update, and optimize up to 3 of them on your system free of charge. If you decide to send them in, you will be provided with a shipping label and Alienware pays for the shipment. …” “Optimize the game for the system?”, shouldn’t that be the other way ......

Isnt the Halo Pelican cool
The one disappointing thing about Halo for me was that I didn’t get the chance to get into the cockpit of a Pelican. To me the Pelican looks so cool, it almost shares the same design style from the drop ships in Starship Troopers. Well if any of you feel like I do and want to get behind the stick of the pelican here a flash game that gives you that opportunity. ......
